I really enjoyed it. It gripped me from the start. The shootouts were amazing. The sound of the guns was terrifying. Well worth a couple of your hours.
It doesn't need to justify the size of production to the viewer, only to the bean counters. What we, the viewers get, is some beautiful, original, expensive (!!!) filmmaking with an original soundtrack and wonderful performances. I'm elated and glad someone took the risk. Too bad it's a flop, but it's a worthy addition to the western canon and stands along with Buster Scruggs and Django Unchained as one of the best Westerns in quite a while.
@@charliepanayiotou4305 Well, I think it's done now and they'll focus on more commercial stuff, but they've produced some fantastic stuff (with some socialist ideas, no less).
I'm a huge fan of Kermode's and always come back to listen to what he thinks of a film right after I've seen it myself. But I'm a bit disappointed with this one. He doesn't discuss the performances of the two lead actors but instead just talks about the budget and its overall profit for the majority. Quite frankly I couldn't care about how financially successful it is in the box office but rather would like to hear about where he thought the film maker went right and where he thought went wrong. Anyways, love the channel and will continue to watch the future videos.
I never doubted that them as brothers. The silent glances and unspoken interactions are so real to life of 2 siblings living and working together. I hope more people see it
It's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie so thoroughly. And the ending was satisfying! Didn't feel like two hours at all. And the score was divine.
Managed to catch this last night and loved it. Refreshing with a great cast (while you expect this of Reilly, Phoenix, Gyllenhaal), it was great to see Riz Ahmed being given a decent film role. Watched him in The Night Of and was blown away! Beautiful cinematography, sometimes amusing / moving script, a comforting piece. I went in, not having read any reviews nor seen the trailer and just really enjoyed it, haven’t felt that in the cinema for some time...
Odd that Kermode would criticise film that he likes the performances of, the tone and how it plays out based on its return at the box office and budget. Cinemas seem to be becoming a location exclusively reserved for low-production/high-promotion jump-scare horror films and Disney/Marvel movies. Shame that Kermode negatively rates what seems to be an intelligent and exciting film based on its poor box office returns.
Just saw it and loved it. I think there's a lot to unpack if one is in any way knowledgeable of Psychoanalysis (or Psychoanalytical film theory/"The Grand Theory", suck it, David Bordwell!!). It's like an entry course for that kind of film analysis. Other than that, there's a TON of great shots, violent events and a beautiful ending. I love this modern Era of western filmmaking, where there's just unlimited ways to approach the genre and pretty much every single notable film adds a twist to the formula.
The reason a lot of people didn't see The Sisters Brothers is it wasn't well released. Our local Regal Cinema 10 screen movie complex didn't even show it and I had to wait for the DVD. I really liked it, wishing I could have seen this beautifully shot film on the big screen. Great soundtrack, great acting, surprisingly moving story. Solid film that most movie goers couldn't have seen in the theater if they wanted to.
Thankyou Mark, interesting as always but it did rather feel like you were reviewing the budget rather than the film. It does beg the question, is there anything wrong with quirky stories being told using a large budget or does it undermine the film artistically in some way? I can imagine there might be a certain cognitive dissonance in watching a gritty kitchen sink drama in hi def 3D on your local IMAX screen. Is that the case here?
Glad most people here liked it. I was hesitant as I enjoyed the book so much- but it is odd and knew it would make an odd film: but I loved it. Thought it did the book justice and the casting was bang on (everyone, including me and my family predicted John C Reilly as Eli and he was perfect).
Like other commenters have said, the focus on the budget in this review is odd. The budget is not important for the viewers. Perhaps this is not the full review as it ended abruptly.
Come off it Mark, it’s not THAT odd. So it wasn’t quite what you expected. Isn’t that a good thing? And as others have said, so what if it was expensive?
I watched this having seen the trailers way back when it was released. Firstly i must say I found the trailers misleading., and this review very unhelpful. I loved this film. Unpredictable and slightly quirky. Great casting. Great soundtrack!
Usually enjoy Mark's reviews, but this one seemed oddly dispassionate. He needs to be aware of a disconnect in his audience over analytical consistency. Marvel films in particular (Captain Marvel) seem to be looked at in a very forgiving fashion...
Its a good movie. Very depressing I thought at times but it shows how brutal it was to live it that era. Great casting and loved the little bits like them brushing their teeth for 1st time and the feeling off wide open unsettled land.
It was fine but with it being a Western from the guy who made A Prophet with that cast, my expectations were probably too high but it did feel like less than the sum of its parts
I’ll summarise the video “the film was bad because it didn’t make money” If making money is what makes a film good, then by his logic captain marvel was a cinematic masterpiece
Also really liked it. I think Mark is right that it's tonally uneven, narratively unfocused, and the dialogue is a bit iffy sometimes, but the two leads fit their respective roles perfectly, it's well made technically and visually, and I actually liked the slightly meandering, unpredictable plot, especially when That scene happens, which was utterly brutal. And spoiler warning, I really liked how it ended, just when you think there's gonna be a cliche shootout climax, it his you with an unexpectedly sentimental hug.
It's ironic isn't it. Sometimes, it takes a bigger budget to realise the scope and dimension of a more interesting film. But, then that quirkiness ends up being it's undoing at the box office. I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and it's dance around tragi-comedy and interpersonal relationships.
I honestly thought it was too odd of a film, especially in the tonal shifts. Not to spoil but anyone who's seen the film will know about that scene where things become pretty horrific in a way that really drains the audience but leave you wondering like..why ? The character of joaquin phoenix is unbearable from start to finish and it's honestly quite hard to get invested in the story when annoying stuff like this keeps happening
it needed a more period script. I never believed the universe it was in because what they said/how they said it. needed a Deadwood filter to run the script through. and they needed way less words to ten the story and let the images/music etc do more of the heavy lifting
I've just started watching this on Netflix and I've learned more about the plot of the film with the comments here than the movie itself. I guess I've watched too many Tombstones, Godless and Spag Bol Wezzies. Just when I think this might be a drama, it's then a comedy but then breaks into the best gunfight ever but then cuts back to confusion. I'll stick with it cuz the shoot outs are what I perceive to be a tad more gritty than some but it might have been better to watch a trailer and reviews first ✌️
I thought this film had great potential but when the 2 sexondary main characters got killed off the film went a bit wayward. And then i was expecting a big showdown with the Commodore but that turned out to be an anti climax
It was a rather enjoyable movie - 3 likable central performances. Odd for the reviewer to complain about the budget of the movie, what does it matter to him!
Very strange and odd movie indeed. There are some dark undertones to this one that isn't even reveled to the audience during the movie. The Indian actor was eluding to. Very creepy feel to this one.
what is this guy rattling on about... this movie was genius. He shows a scene that was completely ordinary, especially for a western, and calls it quirky? Compares it to "the ballad of buster (whatever)". No idea what movie he watched but it was not the intelligently written, expertly directed, and seamlessly acted film I watched. Didnt even talk about the sets and the outfits, which were great.
Yes, ' overbudget' (the Dr. Knows this isn't an argument, especially for s review), yes, tonal shifts, yes, production values too expensive for film(!?). But, was it entertaining? Thumb up or down , please. I'm thinking of spending hard earned cash to see this & trust his judgement, but where was it?Urrrgghhhh... Sod it! I'm seeing it & make-up my mind ... reviewers- why?
What's odd is the fact that you over use 'odd' for this film. It's unique and bloody good. From the acting to the writing and cinematography. It's effectively a tragedy but at the heart of it there's a hell of a love of love at the core- not your typical western. I recommend it! I'm surprised you couldn't find many more complimentary words about this film; I find it frankly quite odd in fact.
Didn't think the film was funny but I liked it. If you're going to mention the budget and the box office in a review don't do on about it. It's interesting but not relevant. I mentioned in my review how the marketing negatively affected how I first saw the film because its more important to viewers to not have the wrong mindset and expectations going in. This is a must see film for big fans of the genre which I am not. Check out my spoiler free review on my channel.
I find it odd how somehow u think u are the authority on what the budget of a film should or shouldn't be by the story it is telling... i think it was exactly every bit of what it should be to capture the time period and cinematography.... and as far as a walking into a movie like this in search of comedy says u didnt even watch the trailer a little bit.... in other words, i disagree with just about everything you said here
Just watched it. All over the place. Really uneven character development. Tonally confused. The script just isn't good enough. I was expecting so much more, especially with such a good cast. Also, there are several sequences that are completely over-directed. Disappointing.

Riz Ahmed was brilliant in this film. I hope he gets a film that rewards him with an Oscar! He’s a stellar actor and brilliant artist.
I loved the book I had no idea they were making a movie of it. But if I remember rightly the book was quite odd too.
