@@iainjames03 Mark is the man who, in his roundup of "best films of 1997" in his guest spot on Lamacq's evening session, told a 12 year old me about GPB and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which if I recall correctly were his number 3 and number 1 of the year... :P
As a massive Odenkirk fan I’d been looking forward to this for ages and it didn’t disappoint. A 91 minute blast of incredibly well made adrenaline watching one of the best actors around kick major ass. What’s not to love.
Great review and great banter as ever. I think going through lockdown with the kermodemayo reviews and podcasts saved me from a lot of dull days. In fact I know it did. Can’t wait for your review of Dune.
Bob Odenkirk is possibly my favourite actor thanks to Better Call Saul (my favourite show) and this movie was just great fun. I love action movies when they use random objects as weapons and traps and this one didn't disappoint. Definitely worth a watch.
I wonder if Mark would ever consider reviewing any TV shows. Not anything big, but little season long shows like Chernobyl or the new Kate Winslet show. TV is an underrated medium that is as good as film at its best in my opinion.
I've been looking for a fix since I finished latest season of "Better Call Saul" and have rewatched the Taken movies about 20 times over lockdown: looks like I've found it :)
On the right side of disposable. Choreography is clumsy, scrappy and makeshift with a solid sense of pain. Ode Kirk is the principal reason to see this with his straight faced, barely contained fury of a performance and Christopher Lloyd comes in ready to have fun. Thought it took too long to get into the meat and potatoes of it all and too many music cues but this is a good excuse to go to the theatre. Glad you enjoyed yourself Mark
Yeah, it felt like a different movie when it started than what it ended up as (being a sleeper cell instead of an actual "nobody", which seems more interesting than just another Bourne/Wick unstoppable agent film).
It'll be too late to put this here, but I went into this film on recommendation alone, knowing none of the set-up and that was BY FAR the best way to see it. I had assumed that he was a simple man pushed to the limit... but the penny-drop reveal really made this film for me. I haven't laughed this much through a film for a long time. Not necessarily because it was funny. It was just nuts :)
I can't think of many actors more likeable than Bob Odenkirk. Rhea Seehorn would be up there too, which is probably one of the many reasons Better Call Saul is so endlessly watchable.
mark, i do reviews on facebook for friends. and your review is, snap to mind. i knew nothing about this film, and was blown away how much i loved it !! 10/10
I kinda thought this would float Mark's boat. I hope he gets the opportunity to watch and review Boss Level with Frank Grillo. It takes the concept of Groundhog Day and applies it to an action movie. It is a huge amount of fun.
I loved action scenes (which are all top tier and wildly creative BTW) but the plot needed just a bit more polish and cohesion. They could have shuffled one maybe two things about the story around and this movie would have been an A+ in my book. I still highly recommend it.
i can't echo these sentiments enough... great fun, and never outstays it's welcome. also, this isn't a spoiler, but saul, rza, and doc brown all standing side-by-side in a shoot out! whew, lad...
I enjoyed most of the movie and Bob Odenkirk was great, I thought it crossed a line and went a bit too over the top ridiculous at the end which spoilt it for me. If they had toned down the ending to a little more believable and a little less silly I would have enjoyed it much more. Personally I much preferred Wrath of Man with Jason Statham.
@@scottneil1187 I hope so! We've had some great films recently with John Wick, Nobody, Wrath of Man, etc. Riders of Justice is also supposed to be really good too.
I was surprised by John Wicks, because I didn't just like it as a KR movie. This I watched thinking it would be a lesser version. But both stand up as good rewatchable action movies. Actually watching your review makes me want to re-watch.
Yeah this had way more fun with the fight scenes, than the cgi coldness of the fights in Jon Wick, highly overrated them films. The third had better fights than the first two.
@@esinach the characters and story in John Wick I found pretty meh. In the 3rd movie I didn't really care for anything between the brilliant action scenes. What I loved about Nobody is the similar great action but a bit more to it in term of character etc.
@@arrongumbrell539 I liked the first john wick, but the 2nd just felt a bit silly to me and not in a good way. So I didn't bother with part 3. Is it that good?
@@yourmum69_420 the action in three is amazing but in-between the action scenes there isn't much in terms of plot and so I was just waiting for the next action scene to start.

I've just discovered this film : my first thought was " A History of Violence" ... then John Wick :-) . I've not seen Wick . Looks fun though I have to say I'm not a fan of putting songs over action / fight scenes...
I mean, most of the movies like Taken, The Equalizer, John Wick and lately Nobody, have used the trope of seemingly normal guy is a badass with a dark past, but that's all tbh, those films are most dedicated to action than drama, and it mostly works, but it feels monotone right now, those take them self to serious... But... I have to say John Wick's action is great if you just wanna watch great choreography, and Nobody is equally great, the dark tone, the black comedy and the ridicule action make it kinda different to its predecessors.
didn’t like it, 2/10. very far fetched, unbelievable plot and i didn’t like how instead of actually getting revenge on the original perpetrators he picked on some uninvolved to his life people, basically to him - innocent. made someone he doesn’t know a vegetable, who has some gang boss relative who hijacks the movie into a crappy cat and mouse basically, that has no realism. i was deeply unsatisfied with it myself
Really, Mark? I'm a big fan of Bob Odenkirk and I was looking forward to this as well, but I thought it was just a bit... meh. Rather than being Taken meets Mr and Mrs Smith, I'd say it was more Death Wish meets Home Alone. I know that it's a silly action movie, but maybe some well-drawn characters might have been in order. Odenkirk's performance is good, but he doesn't exactly have a lot to work with. The only reason we know who Hutch is is because he literally explains it in a couple of clumsy expository info-dumps. This is what is known as Bad Screenwriting. Show, don't tell. I did enjoy the over the top carnage, but it was mostly a load of CGI blood splatter, and felt more cartoon-like than anything. It doesn't really compare to the insanely choreographed action sequences in something like Shoot 'em Up (which is also much funnier). Not bad, but not great, either. But as a way to pass 90 minutes on a weekday evening? Okay, fine.
Like mark, went in with 0 expectations. Came out with a big smile on my face too.
