Is this hot melt glue the same stuff as the hot glue gun stick?

The glue that came with my kit is crap. I'm trying it again. The glue didn't hold the first time. I'm going with Gorilla Glue if this doesn't work

Will hair dryer work on heating the end of it up good enough

A hair dryer probably won't get hot enough. A lighter would be the next best DIY option if you don't have a heat gun.

does this work for the other guides on the rod?

No, lower guides need to be wrapped and epoxied with a wrap and thread finish.
