  • A short video of some the steps I take making one of my guitars. This Particular guitar is a Custom TS (telecaster Style) The body is made from two pieces of alder, the neck & fret board are from Maple.
The guitar has 1:19 locking tuners that are mounted in tapered holes for the best possible location and stability. Bone nut, Medium Jumbo frets. The” Alnico” humbuker’s have been coil tapped via a push pull tone knob control. This video shows a short over view of the cnc steps taken, It is obviously a lot more involved and time consuming. It doesn’t show all the prep work sanding, fret levelling and polishing 3d modelling , programming more sanding! Wiring and final finishing and set up.
Anyway I hope you enjoy my video I happy to answer any questions you might have please subscribe share and like
    Thank you

    Hi Nick,
You play this wonderful piece beautifully. It is so moving.
Wow the equipment you have to make your guitars is amazing,
and they look and play superbly well too.
    Congratulations.

In regards to creating a perfect neck pocket, what does that process look like? Do you measure the neck heel and then offset the tool paths by a certain amount? Great body, dig those modern carves.

+Mark Gutierrez hi mark I always make the neck blank first. Once the neck is finished. Machine the neck pocket to suit. I do this with 1 roughing cut 1 mm smaller than Finnish size. I then have several profile cutter paths all from 0.1 mm under size going up in 0.05 steps. I keep opening the pocket up 0.05 mm at a time until the fit required. I hope that make sense

Do you consider the Duet controller much better than the previous? I also own a workbee 750 x 1000, but equipped with the CNC X-Pro controller and I am considering upgrading to Duet.

+graveur graveur yes having had both I would say the duet controller is much much smoother. If mine went wrong I would buy another duet rather than install my old x-pro

Can you tell me what finish that is and how you applied it? I just bought an Alder Strat blank

Yes this particular guitar was finished with birchwood tru oil. Sanded to 320 grit first then I applied a sanding sealer. Then I slowly built up thin layers of the oil applied by an old washed out t shirt . Hope that helps best of luck with your project.

Great job. What software are you using for 3D carving?

Thanks, I use solidworks for the 3D modelling, followed by aspire for creating the Gcode

@@NickRogersNJRCustomGuitars I am in the process of purchasing a workable 1000 x 1000 but I am scratching my head over the software choices....but by requirements seem pretty much what you are using here....can you share the software versions you use....the web sites are exploding my head with choices.

@@sgbibby hi, i use solid works for 3D modelling and fusion 360 for all the cutter paths. I have made a more detailed up to date video on how i now make a neck. If I were starting out like you I would download fusion 360. It’s a great program and an added bonus it’s free to hobby users. It dose both 3D modelling and will produce all your cutter paths. There are some quite good tutorials for fusion on UA-cam as well. Hope that helps 👍

Nice choice of swooping arm bevel. How long would you say it takes for the CNC to cut out the body for you?

Did you make any modification to the Workbee to get more Z depth?

Hi yes I made new gantry plates with the workbee for the workbee out of 8mm aluminium plate. +40mm

Love the self-modificating machine thing :P Care to share pics / details? Did you machine something like this? www.ebay.com/itm/WorkBee-CNC-1-Taller-Deluxe-Y-Side-plates-seen-at-Openbuilds-/263699509838

Simon Labrecque yes my plates are very similar to those . When I purchased the workbee I already knew I wanted taller plates so before I built the machine I took measurements from the original plates. Designed my new plates, built the bee and machined the new ones. Stripped it back down and replaced them. Works really well. They have never been any problem.
