  • Our bodies rely on an ultrafast nervous system to send impulses very quickly and it all starts with a special cell called the neuron. In this episode, Patrick will explain how these cells tell your body what to do.

What's so amazing about one's sense of touch is how it’s actually multiple senses wrapped into one-the same tissue that senses hot and cold also senses pressure, texture, and even pain signals.
The nervous system, one of our most intricate bodily systems handles motor control among many other things. And the nervous system is fast, with some nervous impulses traveling up to 120 meters a second, or over 260 miles an hour, which, for the record, is faster than a race car.
This ultrafast but diverse type of signaling is thanks in part to a long, spindly cell called the neuron that makes up the nervous system.
So in this episode of Human, Patrick will take a deep dive into how the nervous system can transmit information so quickly, taking a closer look at the neuron and how scientists are getting closer to reconstructing the sense of touch in the lab.
We will explore the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and all the things in between. Watch to find out more.

    Introduction to the Nervous System
    training.seer.cancer.gov/anat...
“The nervous system is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It is the center of all mental activity including thought, learning, and memory. Together with the endocrine system, the nervous system is responsible for regulating and maintaining homeostasis.”
It feels instantaneous, but how long does it really take to think a thought?
    theconversation.com/it-feels-...
“As inquisitive beings, we are constantly questioning and quantifying the speed of various things. With a fair degree of accuracy, scientists have quantified the speed of light, the speed of sound, the speed at which the earth revolves around the sun, the speed at which hummingbirds beat their wings, the average speed of continental drift. These values are all well-characterized. But what about the speed of thought?”
New prosthetic limbs go beyond the functional to allow people to ‘feel’ again
    www.washingtonpost.com/health...
“Phantom pain was all that Keven Walgamott had left of the limb he lost in an accident over a decade ago - until he tried on the LUKE Arm for the first time in 2017, and told researchers that he could “feel” again. The arm is a motorized and sensorized prosthetic that has been in development for over 15 years by a team at the University of Utah.”

And when it goes wrong, it goes wrong in a catastrophic way.
I have Ataxia that it literally destroying my cerebellum (the area of your brain responsible for balance, muscle control, parts of speech and ability to swallow among other things). I also have sensory and motor peripheral neuropathy. Ataxia can be its own genetic disorder with many different forms but for me all this ongoing damage is caused by a genetic metabolic disorder so also effects my digestive system. The most devastating is the neuropathic damage, I can no longer walk without a frame (or indoors using a stick and grabbing onto furniture, walls and grab rails that have needed to be installed) and for anything more than a very short distance I now need to use a wheelchair. My condition is what is called ‘life limiting’.
The nervous system is so complex that there is still very little known about how it all works, when it goes wrong there is little to no treatment, you just have to learn to adjust and medicate for the hellish pain levels, muscle spasms and the like. Just in my lifetime of dealing with my rare and possibly even unique to me disorder knowledge has improved in leaps and bounds, hopefully one thing that can be gained by study of my disorder and others like me is knowledge to help those who come after me.

It is truly amazing how all these complex systems work in balance and symmetry... And it cannot be stressed enough, that for those who seek, what you put into the physical body is important to the various systems optimal functioning. Also, if the system contains intricate electrical components and we are to understand (to even a minute degree) how some of these systems work, there must be some sort of meditation, in order to have a calm enough mind to gain insight (Whether or not one could interact with these electrical systems - such as slowing heart rate - has actually proven to be possible with meditation).

I'll experiment with it but, the most I do with chemicals is reroute energy to chemicals like dopamine. So if instead of training my body overtime, I can just program it to believe the action is pleasurable. Or emulating effects of drugs like alcohol from obtained data and running the program to feel the effects without consumption.

THE HIDDEN ELECTRIC WORLD IN OUR BODY
We could detect objects by our eyes or with our fingers. This is because of our nerves. The speed of nurons is 120m/s and 260mph.The Brain and Spinal chord are CNS and other nerves are PNS.
Dendrites collects chemical signals from cells which sends electrical impluse to axon terminals. The axon terminals releases some chemicals into synapse and each chemical is unique. We have variations within sense of touch and 🤒 temperature. Understanding this helps us to solve problems in Medical technology.
Research is going on to keep touch receptors and temperature receptors in slick robots. In robotic hand the great loss is these receptors and sensory cues is successful but needs improvement in it and a technique called Morphological nural coputation can design hands and robotic fingertips

5:00 So, the myelin sheath is like the insulating layers of a wire, right? I've always wondered why they weren't continuous. Why don't they cover the entire axonal surface? Are there any adverse effects of 100% coating? Would total envelopment help to stave off or even prevent neurodegenerative diseases? Do other axons connect at these gaps?

Na+ k+ and Cl- are present in unequal amounts between the cell membrane of the axon. This allows the axon be more negatively charged compared to the outside of its membrane( around -70 mv).
When the beginning of the axon reaches a charge of -55 millivolts due to enough excitatory signals from neighboring neurons reaches it in the right amount of time, the axon allows ions on the outside of its membrane pass through it freely for a short enough period of time to creat an "electrical" signal propagate down to the other end (the axonal buds).
This process happens much faster if you have myelin covering large spots along the way down the axon because ions dont have to go through as many ion channels (the proteins that let ions pass through the axon membrane). Instead, the ions jump from one small segment of channels to an other small segment of channels because the rest are covered by the myelin (looking up a diagram that mention "nodes of ranvier" might help).
However, if myelin covered the entirety of the axon, the ion channels on the axon that let ions in to creat an electrical signal would all be covered by myelin. This means no electrical signaling would occur.
      TL;DR:
no myelin means your neurons send signals slower.
Having myelin means your neurons send signals faster.
Having a big myelin sheet covering every part of the axon means no signaling can occur because ions cant pass into the neuron.

THIS WAS VERY INTERESTING TO ME. I HAVE HAD 4 BACK SURGERIES AND I HAVE MASSIVE SCAR TISSUE ON THE SCIATIC NERVE BETWEEN L5 AND S2. I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN A VIDEO LIKE YOURS THAT EXPLAINS THINGS IN A NON DOCTOR SPEAK. I KEPT HAVING TO STOP MY DOCTOR WHEN HE WAS EXPLAINING IT ALL TO ME BECAUSE HE WOULD TALK TO ME LIKE HE WAS TALKING TO ANOTHER DOCTOR THAT COULD UNDERSTAND DOCTOR TALK.I AM NOW ALSO A DIABETIC AND HAVE NEUROPATHY IN BOTH LEGS FROM THE KNEES DOWN. I AM ALSO GETTING IT IN MY HANDS. ANYTHING ON THAT WOULD ALSO BE OF GREAT HELP.
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Get the book HANDS OF LIGHT written by the physicist Barbara Brennan. To see what you look like as normal is very helpful as far as imagining that you are back perfect again.
