Funny thing is I was actually "flexitarian" without even trying before I went keto. SuperAtheist In the absence of Glucose molecules to generate Acetyl CoA, ketone bodies are used to generate Acetyl CoA, the molecule that enters citric acid cycle to generate protons which are used in oxidative phosphorylation to produce ATP.
SuperAtheist the protein is broken down to amino acids which are converted to keto acid and urea. The keto acid is used to convert to Acetyl CoA which goes into the krebs cycle and the NADs get reduced which are transferred to The ETC where oxidative phosphorylation takes place

It is not an Ion being "Thrown" from one synapse to the next. The impulse releases Neurotransmitters that can cause an impulse in the receiving Neuron. Different Neurotransmitters have different effects on the receiving neuron and this his how they communicate!

I'm pretty sure that neurons do not fire ions out at neurons across the synaptic gap. Neurons send biochemicals called neurotransmitters across the synaptic gap. That is an electrical to chemical transduction process. Ions go in out of channels that cause the neuron membrane to depolarize. But there are no ions fired out of the neuron. You can take my word on that.

This makes me wonder. I see and hear so much about the ketogenic diet, that trains the body to run on fat instead of glucose (carbs). Proponents claim clearer thinking and better sleep, as well as losing body fat, since ketosis makes fat your body's fuel.

Electricity is just a side effect of the chemistry of neurons. The firing called "action potential" is a chemical wave (sodium and potassium), the end of which trigger the delivery of a neurotransmitter, another chemical which accumulate in a small reservoir, the synapse. The neurotransmitter is either exciting or inhibiting allowing analogic addition or subtraction.
After a time window such as 10 ms, the next neuron sharing the synapse will fire, meaning the addition win or remain silent, the subtraction win, the comparison between add and sub is negative, no match.
The synapse allow each neuron to remain fully enclosed hermetically, like any other cells so that a sick neuron keep its diseases for itself.
The synapse also absorb the electric shock to prevent exciting accidentally the next neuron.
The next pulse has to be the result of the chemical battle in the synapse, the electric shock of neurons firing is just unwanted noise.

But if you're fasting or doing some kind of ketosis diet, your body will eventually convert parts of itself to use as energy for the brain, so never fear. It's a lot harder to go down in flames than you might think. The only immediately threatening ingredient (not dangers but ingredients) is lack of water.
Clinical depression and ADD, my brain burns up every time I have to really think. Any ideas on how to get organized and motivated to... use my brain on important stuff?
I know that when my glucose levels are low, I get agitated easily, it's harder to concentrate, and even communicating with others is impaired. I have eaten a banana when I've been like this and it's helped, but of course it doesn't last long. Though, in a pinch it can help a lot.

I am just taking a neurobiology course and you can't beleive how much the nervous system is complicated and accurate and to some one come tell me oh this thing evolved from a single primitive cell millions and millions years ago I would almost kill him this is a fantastic creation and it is humilating to us and to it to say it all came by chance. just appreciate your minds and give them some respect.

Also, a nitpick (he is factually wrong, but it's a side issue and he is simplifying things) ... at 2:43 to 2:47 he says that mitochondria burn glucose. But they don't. One molecule of glucose is converted into two molecules of pyruvate during glycolysis, and it is the pyruvate (not glucose) that enters mitochondria.
The neurons dont release ions (2:13) which is grabbed by other ions but neurotransmitters, they are not ions.

Funny thing is I was actually "flexitarian" without even trying before I went keto. It's more natural for me to eat that way, but I was having trouble with some things and fueling for long days of mountain biking, so I wanted to try fueling with fats, and it worked for me. It takes a few weeks to adapt, but after that you don't have to worry about ever running out of energy on long days of cardio.

This is a major distinction since GLUT 3 is not insulin dependent and has a low Km (high affinity for glucose). ...In regards to muscle GLUT 4 is correct...just not for neurons... Glucose is not given to the mitochondria -- molecules derived from glucose eventually enter the mitochondria after the glucose molecule undergoes several reactions. Technically, an organism does not need mitochondria to produce ATP, as it can happen in the cytoplasm of the cell via glucose catabolism and doesn't even require oxygen (anaerobic glycolysis). However, this method of ATP production is by no means superior, as it produces much less ATP per glucose molecule than aerobic metabolism (occurring in the mitochondria). Its advantage lies in the *rate* of ATP production, which is useful when energy is needed immediately.

Just about correct, however, the "messages" are simply action potentials, or electric charge in motion (current). It generally takes many presynaptic neurons synapsing with a post-synaptic neuron to create a "spike" in it. It, in turn, becomes one of many neurons to send current to other neurons to possibly create another spike. It is these patterns of spiking neurons over time that is called "neural activity" in our brain. These patterns somehow create everything we perceive externally and internally, felt emotions, dreams, actions, behaviors and thought, and throw in consciousness.

And I have a slight correction, or maybe I need the correction
But GLUT4 (Glucose Transporter superfamily 4) are Regulated by insulin and found in muscles and adipose tissue mainly, the Glucose Transporters in the brain cannot be Insulin dependent, otherwise all diabetics who have slightly low insulin exposure would die almost immediately.
