Short video demonstrating 80s thrash metal tones with the Marshall Studio Vintage SV20 - 20 watt plexi (1959SLP).
It still sounds somewhat vintage but combined with the boost from the tubescreamer and high output pickups there is a lot of gain. The EQ in the FX loop helps to tighten things up and cut a slight amount of mids for a more metal sound.
No post processing. As usual amp is going to a TwoNotes Captor with impulse responses. Intro clip is TS + EQ, rest of the settings/info are on screen. Same amp settings through the whole video.
Its metal enough to me. Not in a modern context but in a classic one from Sabbath to the arrival of Rectifiers.
0:38 "Oh wee ya. Eyooooo wah!"
I'm in the market for a low wattage Marshall, and this is one of the contenders...Thank you!
Just remember that THIS was the amp early Metal bands such as Judas Priest used, and even Metallica used this on Kill 'em All.
Metallica used a modded 2203 on Kill ‘em all, not the 1959slp
@@BigRiffsRigs I'd always heard the 2203 was first used on Master of Puppets; the first two albums were done with a Jose-modded Plexi.
No, it's a Jose modded SLP on Kill. You can see it in early pics. The 2203, and Kirk and James used the same one, was on Ride. James got another Jose modded SLP during the recording of the Black album and still uses it, you can see it along with his Mesa Mk II in the videos for the recording of Hardwired.
@@cynicanal111 Modded Plexi - Kill'em all

Mesa Boogie mk.IIc+ slaved into a modded JCM 800 - MOP
It’s actually a modded ‘79 Marshall JMP (2203)
Love the megadeth set the world on fire!!!
Sounds great. I just ordered one. Glad to see its great for metal too
This man knows his Thrash people.
This is the tone. Thank you for this demo
I'm fixing to order one in red snakeskin. Already got a JVM210H half stack and a 1959RR (Randy Rhoads) half stack but i need something smaller now that I'm showing up for a weekly rehearsal. This thing is awesome. Once i got one Marshall amp i had to have them all lol. Anyways these studio versions are awesome. Reasonably priced and faithful recreations of the originals. And they don't weigh one billion pounds.
Cool thing is you can switch from metal to traditional hard rock plexi style just kicking off the pedl
What a great sounding amp, thanks for the demo
1:38 I did NOT expect to hear that one. One of the deeper cuts from Slayer
McTwish von Noodles Jesus Saves is one of their biggest songs.
I’ve seen nothing but good reviews for these little guys.
They are great amps!
Love it! It has the early Metallica/Megadeth vibe!
I always crank my presence on mine. It sounds better for me to adjust my treble from my guitar. On my tube screamer or pedals I crank the volume on the pedal to overdrive the tube saturation and I turn down the gain on pedal to get my gain from the amp not the pedal. Great amp and tone!
That's what I do too.... set presence and treble high on the amp and roll off the tone knob on the guitar to get the treble right. Rolling off the guitar volume can improve sound too, high guitar output does not always mean better. When I see guitars without tone knobs now I always laugh a little, you too?
It sounds metal! It sounds very clear and articulate. I like sound of marshall in metal. Chears!
Heard the first riff and knew I came to the right video.
Dimeing the presence and middle will get the most saturation out of the amp. It will get noisy though.
This is what i love about this amp. Just add a drive pedal and you get the JCM 800 sound. Leave it out and get the pure plexi sound. Its a win all round!
I do think you need a good EQ pedal too to get all the way there, but it's definitely there.
@@psychedeliccarrie5921 Yes I would absolutely agree.I just added a Boss GE7 yesterday when a friend came over. Too bad I didn't know of this pedal earlier. Its a nice, inexpensive addition to any rig and you won't believe the difference it makes!
When your tone for "Set the World Afire" is better than what's on the album.
I don't need this amp, but I certainly want this amp.
I got a Friedman Runt 20. :)
Oh the 500T helps a lot I guess, it's a screaming beast. Nice work, this amp is absolutely capable to deliver a metal tone.
Killer video!!! Love and play the same songs 🤣
Had to drop a like for the intro alone. Easily one of my favorite Megadeth riffs.
Nice sound but the eq pedal would have been better after the od to add some extra gain. Moreover they hadn't efx loop back in the day. Try it. It would be even better having a second eq pedal in the loop in your case just to sculpt the tone.
Could a SD-1 get a similar tone to the tubescreamer in this demo like the intro?
Yes they are quite similar
Is this mostly home and studio use or could it be used for live shows ?
how did you get those two extra cables for the plexi inputs. please explain what they are and how to use them
It’s called jumpering, there’s plenty of info online. Basically it allows you to blend the two channels
Are you recording with a mic or direct? I tried one at Guitar Center today and couldn’t get the slightest amount of gain. Only clean tones at the bedroom level (5 watt mode) and it was bloody loud at 2 so I am curious about getting some gain, with out the tube screamer for miked up live shows
It’s speaker out through a load box and cab sims. The amp needs a lot of volume for gain, at least 1 o clock on one volume when jumping channels. The tubescreamer helps a lot but the amp still needs to be cranked up for any kind of gainy tone
Boogie Riffs I didn’t jump cables at Guitar Center or use a tube screamer. I will go back and try it. Thanks for the info
use it without the jumper cable...just the High Treble and with a TS pedal! you will be amazed!
Can you try that vh4 pedal and see if this amp can get tool tones?
I don’t have the pedal anymore. I have a Diezel Einstein now instead!
Sounds killer what speakers were you using there?
Don't remember sorry. Some sort of greenback and/or V30 IRs probably
Is the FX Loop works well with reverb /delay pedals?
Yes it works quite well
Yes
sounds great to me. How loud is it for home use?
Extremely loud!
Yep i rented a jcm sc20 and compared to my dsl 20 it was like 2wice as loud 🤣🤣
Would you recommend an attenuator with this bad boy?
Sure why not
What song is the first riff from again?
Set the world afire - Megadeth
Yes :)
i wonder if you had both loudnesses higher you'd get more gain
Probably the treble gain. The other one only adds flubby low end for metal
It does 80s sound pretty well.
Did you have to turn up the volume all the way up for these results?
Yep, and it’s LOUD
Dav ❤
Every marshall can metal
For 20 watts these amps sound massive. How are you suppose to say no to this amp?
If I know my amp tech correctly, 20 watts means that this amp actually has less headroom than its 50 and 100 watt counterparts, meaning this amp breaks up at lower volumes, and furthermore, the Plexi is from the era before preamp distortion and master volumes were developed (meaning the only way to get distortion from the amp is to turn that volume up...just be sure to wear hearing protection). Additionally, there's a low power mode that reduces the amp to 5 watts, which makes this the perfect Plexi type amp to experiment Metal tones with.
Dion R wtf?
I have an SV20, and yes it's plenty loud with indeed not very much clean headroom. The majority of the power and volume is already there at 5w setting. The 20w setting adds just a bit more volume and brings it all more upfront with some added oomph.
Can this amp do bedroom volumes to get this breakup and gain your getting?
I could hardly think of a worse amp besides a bigger plexi for ‘bedroom volume’ as it doesn’t even have a master volume.
So I guess this amp is super loud for house use? Any way to tame it down and still sound good for house volumes?
@@splawner13 I'm thinking of getting one of these, and everything I've read suggests using an attenuator or a volume pedal/pot in the FX loop to get the tube breakup at respectable volumes.
I have an SV20. Even on the 5w setting this thing is very loud. You can do like I did and get a rheostat style amp attenuate off of Reverb. They run about fifty bucks and you can get them in whatever ohm rating you need. This helped me to tame the volume levels considerably.
@@splawner13 get an attenuator. ex: Weber Mini Mass
Is it me or does this amp have more of a raw bite compared to the sc20 ? The sc20 to me sounds compressed
Yes that’s plexi vs jcm800. 800 has more gain
@@BigRiffsRigs does the origin sound close enough with the same settings as your plexi here or not really? All i have is a ts9 an epiphone LP what else would i need with the SV to achieve these same metal sounds?
@@EM-km8em I have recently bought a SV20h, and it’s almost in early thrash metal territory without any boosting. With a tubescreamer or a SD-1 you are in full thrash-land. You don’t really get those wide, extremely scooped sounds with this amp, more like a focused agressive sound, like Kill‘em all. With a distortion pedal like the DS-1 it turns into straight up Norwegian Black-metal!
@@EM-km8em And no, this another beast than the origin, although I use an Origin 212A cab with Celestion G12H30s
aaaaaaarghhh this or the mini jcm 800 damn it
I prefer plexi but just my opinion
I've always prefered a 4 input Plexi like a jtm 45, they're just too loud, these are very versatile amps, anything from Santana and Page to Rhoads and Van Halen. The 800 studio is good too but personally I like the sound that bridging the channels gets more than the two input deal. Just my opinion though
It has too much gain without boost... How the hell is it possible?
I have the SV20H. It's SO loud in the house in a not so small living room. I have it set at 5 watts and it still melt's my face and kills my ears. I do have a Weber Minimass attenuator which makes it manageable and preserves the tone.
You can play any genre of music with a Plexi ...and my favorite guitar, LP Jr
Speakers 🔊?
V30 and greenback impulse responses
The tone of kill'em all is with Plexi.
Kill em all was a Jose Arredondo modded 2203 (master volume circuit). Plexi generally refers to slp 1959, 1987, jtm45 etc non master volume amps.
@@BigRiffsRigs Kill 'Em All was most definitely a master-modded 1959 SLP. Here is a picture of him next to the amp:

Marshalls Are made for metal
Fucking killer. Marshall makes the best sounding amps period. Everything else is just a copy. Except for Fender of course!
The # 1 problem with the Marshall 20 watt models is they are way way too loud . What so many people really want is the Plexi and JCM 800 sound at a much lower bedroom volume level .
The answer of course is for Marshall to rerelease the 1 watt JMP and JCM 800 1 watt series they sound absolutely killer , don't believe it check out the below . First half of video is the Plexi 1 watt . Second half of video is the JCM 800 1 watt . Marshall would sell millions of these year in year out if they made them a regular stock item because the DSL 1 watt sucks in comparison .
ua-cam.com/video/M276pkb80s4/v-deo.html
So Metallica could as well have used a plexi and the albums would sound as great.
They used a modded plexi on kill ‘em all
Yes and it’s so fucking loud you can’t use it at home.
"YAWN"..........It's a damned shame hearing such a SWEET amp being used to create this childish shit. ( Sweet tone is buried under all that needless distortion. ) OF COURSE "metal can be done on this amp".......that's easy: simply use any decent pedal to add the gain needed. But Marshall did THE HARD PART when creating this amp: build an old-school amp that has that signature TONE at most settings, yet cleans up REAL nice. You can always add drive & distortion.........but it's hard to remove from most amps and still have killer tone with plenty of headroom. The SV20 does the trick.......and the Origin series ain't half bad either, especially for the price ( nearly 1/3rd the cost of the SV20 ). Sure, the SV20 is a better amp vs the Origin, but at nearly triple the cost, it damn well should be.
Metal is childish? Sounds like a childish thing to say. What a fucking tool!!
This video served it's purpose by showing that it can be done. The SV20 is capable of other music styles and tones as well.
@@montag4516 Well no shit Shirley. I thought I made myself clear in my original comment. You can take ANY half decent amp & get "distortion" via pedals. That's easy. The HARD part is creating an amp that has KILLER tone, even when clean or at the very edge of break up. And Marshall has done just that with this amazing little amp. I actually like it's overall tone better than the Marshall 50w JCM 800 and 100w JCM 900 I once owned. They were both great amps. But this little amp nails it even better.
headroom lol what dweeb
