      I totally appreciate that. I was considering making a wed clay tutorial video for youtube to cover the basics and a bit more but I just don’t know how well it would do for the amount of time I’d have to sink in. I’m not totally sure how many of you want to learn how to sculpt vs. just be entertained. • @yobased2872
      @yobased2872 Рік тому +1

      @@SculptureGeek Yea I don't know how valuable the previous tutorials were to you financially vs. time invested, but for people like me they were so valuable. Another idea besides making a full on tutorial would be to upload a sort of "less abridged" timelapse of your sculpting process to your Patreon. A good example of this is a UA-camr called Crafty Art if you look up what he just did with his Willem Defoe Joker sculpt. He made a sort of "entertainment" UA-cam video timelapse of his process similar to the way you do, but then he put up longer segments of his sculpting sessions on his Patreon for those people like me who are actually interested in learning something as you mentioned lol. He split up a sculpt probably similar in length to what you've done here into like ten or so 15-20 minute semi-edited timelapse segments of like one video for "Teeth and Wrinkles" one video for "Hair" etc. So it's not as in depth as a tutorial but those interested can actually discern what you're doing and it's actually useful educationally so people will pay for it via Patreon. Maybe something like that could be a good idea for you as a sort of "in between" putting out fully edited and narrated tutorials vs. these super abridged UA-cam videos?

    Stunning work! What do you “do” with these sculpts made from this clay? I mean, how well does it keep and do you find that it cracks over time? Is that ever a concern?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! Anything made in this clay particularly, should be molded. The clay normally cracks in unpredictable spots so there’s a window in which case you can make a successful mold of it. It’s possible to reconstitute the clay to be used again but sometimes that’s not worth the effort. It depends as well how long you let it dry out for- for instance, if you let it firm up just enough to be handled, and then do the mold, you can sort of scrape off the outer shell and that makes it easier to re-use. It would need to be wrapped back up and used as soon as possible. This one specifically will probably just get tossed if it cracks in unsightly places- if it doesn’t, then I’ll hang on to it.

    Got any tips on skin texture? I am working with Chavant NSP hard. I am doing a female bust. I have been dotting up the skin with a round tipped tool like you did on the riven and cloud videos, dragging for creases etc. I use a tooth brush to smooth it out after. I still feel like it’s not quite right, the balance in to much texture while preserving her smooth skin as well as avoiding the texture being to porous, skins a bit more like paint from a roller. Your skin looks less like dots, should I dab harder, more often etc?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      Skin texture can be a pain. It depends a lot on the scale you're working in. I use one or two different sized ball styluses one of them is like the smallest I could find and I use it for almost everything. Keep in mind that pores are directional. They're not normally just round dots. They tend to have a tiny little bit of "drag" You can usually help that by angling the tool as you press. If anything, use a much lighter touch and trust in it. It doesn't take a lot of pressure to texture a surface in clay even in super hard clays or waxes. Layering it is also the way to go- you may have to go back in and punch things up after a pass or two. I would always try not to go too heavy. In fact, I would say I have a pretty light hand and I still struggle not to go too heavy sometimes especially after a long repetitive session where you're tired and the finish line is not quite in sight lol. When in doubt soften things up and do another light pass. These days, I don't really go too hard on texture especially for these UA-cam sculpts. Just a few light layers so that the sculpt isn't totally smooth. Hope that helps!

    • @SculptureGeek

      No, this clay has to be molded once you're finished with the piece. When it dries out, it becomes very brittle and cracks unpredictably. There are things you can do to mitigate the cracking but, you're better off just molding it.

    First of all ive seen your work and i am speechless u have definetly inspired me to start sculpting. I just wanted to ask what is the recommended plasteline to use lets say on a mask sculpture? I ordered some nsp hard to try out should i start with something else?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      Chavant will work great for a mask- the hard grade is what I like most. The biggest thing is that it’ll take a little longer but you’ll have better control. A lot of folks use Wed clay for masks but it can be tough for beginners. It’s less self supporting and you need to be able to tone things well for detailing etc… Where as Chavant, you can always easily change, pickup where you left off, or throw in some quick detail to help visualize the direction you want to go in. Either will be fine tho. I recommend trying as many materials as you can as you go. Good luck and happy sculpting!

    Skin texture is sick. What type of wire is that on the tool? Reminds me of kanthal wire from my vaping days.

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! I didn't go too crazy with the texture, just a quick pass so it wasn't smooth. Most of the metal tools are made from hardened steel or hardened steel wire. Some have teeth that I put in, and some are smooth.

    Awesome as always man, why made you choose wed clay vs chavant? I assume its depends on what you do with it after the sculpt?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! Mostly it's just because I wanted to work larger and faster for a while. I don't plan on molding any of these Wed clay sculpts so they'll just crack and eventually get tossed. I like to jump around here and there with materials as well to not only keep my skills sharp, but because it's just fun. Also, fun to sculpt things lifesize-ish. That said Chavant and Wed are 2 totally different animals. I think Wed is less beginner friendly mostly due to it not being quite as self supportive as Chavant.

    One thing I hadn't considered, how much harder would it be to sculpt with longer fingernails? Would you just use only tools at that point or would there be some unforseen benefits?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      I think it would depend on how long before they got in the way- I've never really thought about it but I couldn't see there being any real benefit to it. You really use the pads of your fingers more than anything- generally tools help you to reach areas better but I think even though attached to your finger, you would still have better control with the right tool. I can't stand having long fingernails though lol. I have a nail trimmer that I keep alongside my tools to keep them super short lol.

    • @whynotanyting

    I am curious, have any of the companies that you did scupting work for asked for the final product? Like I could imagine the raid devs posting this up in the workplace, or sony santimonica studios taking the bust of claytos and putting it in a glass case in the front lobby!

    @sculptureGeek amazing as always! As this is water based clay I assume this sculpture would dry out and crack? Do you cast it? prep it for a kiln? Just accept it as temporary? Basically what happens next? Thanks dude!

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      It will harden, then eventually, most likely crack into pieces. If you want to keep one, you really need to mold it. The clay is very cheap and just air dries tho so it’s good for making youtube videos if you don’t intend to keep the piece.

    Hi Chris, Amazing work! New to your channel. I read a comment that most of the companies will ask for the final sculpt, do you send them the original UA-cam finished product or a revised version that is a mold or fired piece?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому

      Thank you so much, Josh! They've asked but it's never usually required. If they get one, it's a casting. You could ship the original but it's not worth the risk also, that allows the piece to be painted if they want.

    Off chance Q; Have you found a good way to display/store your work without getting a ton of dust on them?

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! Normally, I just put the pieces up as high as I can on a shelf. If it’s important, then it’s best to mold it asap. Unless you either have money for large glass cases, or don’t care about how it looks you can throw a lightweight plastic drop cloth over and that will stop the dust.

      If I wasn’t filming this would have been about 4-5 days of sculpting. I took my time with it because it was a fun project. I could have potentially done it much faster but that’s about average for water based clay sculpts. Thanks and cheers from the east coast, U.S. 💚

    • @SculptureGeek
      @SculptureGeek  7 місяців тому

      Hi! Wed clay is it's own thing- the name of the company that produces it is Laguna clay. The name stands for Walter Elias Disney and it was developed for Disney for their imagineers to use in the production of films and cartoons. Just search for wed clay (EM-217) by Laguna clay company and you'll get the right stuff :)
