Taiwan's parliament descended into chaos late into the night on Friday (May 17) as proposed reforms led to intense scuffles among lawmakers, just days before president-elect Lai Ching-te's inauguration on May 20. Lawmakers clashed, snatching documents and climbing over each other, resulting in Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Puma Shen being hospitalized with a head injury. With no party holding a majority, the opposition's push for greater parliamentary scrutiny over the government, including a proposal to criminalize officials for false statements, was met with strong resistance from the DPP, who accused opposition parties KMT and TPP of unconstitutional abuse of power.
