John McCormack - When You and I Were Young, Maggie (1925)

- Recorded by John McCormack on December 17, 1925, "When You and I were Young, Maggie" was composed by Chicago violinist, singer and music teacher J.A. Butterfield while the words were written by Canadian lyricist George Washington Johnson, in memory of his wife, "a beautiful and vivacious young woman" named Maggie Clark of the town of Glanford, Ontario. Tragically, Maggie contracted tuberculosis and died on May 12, 1865, when only 23 and less than 12 months after being married. It would become one of the most popular ballads of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
