- This is part of a program presented on RTE radio by John McCormack's widow Lily. It was recorded on 31st August 1950 and broadcast on the 5th anniversary of John McCormack's death, 16th September 1950.
1:24 The snowy breasted pearl (Old Irish Air) Recorded 23rd March 1910
7:16 Salve dimora casta e pura (from Gounod's opera Faust)
Recorded 10th March 1910
12:50 I hear you calling me (Marshall) Recorded 16th June 1921
"The snowy breasted pearl" is a noisy old recording but it's amazing that they managed to squeeze 5 mins 32secs of music onto one side of a record'.As the words are a little unclear at times, I have put them on the video. ("Colleen oge asthore" are words derived from the Irish language and mean "girl young treasure" and "colleen oge machree" means "girl young (in my) heart").
A translation of Salve dimora casta e pura is as follows
I greet you, home chaste and pure,
I greet you, home chaste and pure,
Where is manifested the presence
Of a soul, innocent and divine!
How much richness in this poverty!
In this retreat, how much happiness!
How much richness
What richness in this poverty!
O nature, it is here
That you have made her so beautiful!
It is here that this child
Slept under your wing,
Grew up under your eyes.
Here that your breath
Enveloping her soul,
You made, with love, the woman blossom
Into this angel from heaven!
It’s here! Yes, it is here!
I greet you, home chaste and pure,
I greet you, home chaste and pure,
Where is manifested the presence
Of a soul, innocent and divine!
I greet you, home chaste and pure, etc.

The pleasure is mine
I was brought up listening to this beautiful voice. My Dad loved him
Thanks for listening, I'm glad that your Dad passed on his good taste in music to you.
What a hansom man John was gifted with a magnificent voice🎵☘️☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Thanks for listening and for you comment Mary.
Can you imagine what he would sound like today immense voice beautiful
Thanks for listening and for your comment Peter.
It must have been an amazing experience to hear/see him sing in person. I've read that in addition to his glorious voice, he possessed tremendous stage charisma. The first recording is gorgeous. His high notes are sublime.
Thanks for listening and for your comment, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I first heard him about 60 years ago and have never grown tired of listening to his wonderful voice.
Thanks for the wonderful shots.
Interestingly, on September 16, 1920, Caruso made his last recordings and 25 years later JohnMc Cormack breathed his last
It's my pleasure Hans, thanks for listening/watching. Thanks for mentioning the significance of 16th September, I hadn't noticed that before.
@@michaelmcgrailengland I won't comment on every post you make. But be sure to enjoy each one
It is remarkable how many great tenors died young or at least before three score year and ten eg Caruso, McCormack, Tauber, Wunderlich. Schmidt, Gigli
@@johnster1964 Also Jussi Bjorling at 49 and Mario Lanza at 38 John. It seems so unjust when they gave us so much.
I think these must be some of the finest tenor recordings ever made. Beautiful, beautiful singing.
Thanks for listening and for your comment Peter and I completely agree with you.
What a beautiful way to start the Christmas morning. Grazie infinite!
It's my pleasure Mogo, thank you for listening, I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the video.
The two most memorable McCormick recordings for me: IL MIO TESORO & O SLEEP, WHY DOST THOU LEAVE ME. The latter has a very long passage on one breath that even non tenors as myself have used as a warm up exercise for many years now. In addition on the Handel piece mentioned here is a perfect quick trill that McCormick makes at the beginning of the piece.
Thanks for listening and for your comment Peter.
What a great video you‘ve put together, Michael! Again! The musical selections are beautiful - as are the photos... and of course the lovely commentary by McCormack’s wife... You even took the time to add the lyrics! This is so delightful... ⭐️🌹⭐️
Thank you very much! 🙏🍀
Due to a heavy workload I can‘t visit UA-cam on a daily basis anymore... but I seriously hope to never miss one of your wonderful contributions to the musical fascination the best channels (yours included) pour out so generously...
It's my pleasure Harriet, thank you for listening/watching, I'm really pleased that you like the video (and don't work too hard, it's bad for your health!!).
Someone else, I think from Germany, on this video commented "I won't comment on every post that you make but be sure to enjoy each one" and that's more than good enough for me.
Obviously UA-cam made several changes again as to the possibilities of answering... how terribly annoying... Now I‘m typing into a teeny-tiny window, not able to take a look at your answer any more... which means that I have to learn it by heart in order not to forget anything... Is it even possible to correct or add anything once it has been posted...? I don‘t know yet. But I hope it is because I make so many typos all the time...
Thank you very much for your kind answer! You are right about better not working too much... only sometimes you don‘t have much of a choice... I’ll always try to keep up with your posts! Promised! Listening and enjoying included! It just might take a few days longer than usual before I realize there‘s a new video online...
Looking forward to your next one I send you my best regards! 🍀🍀🍀
I can‘t believe it... now everything is back to normal... How is that even possible...?
Lily mc cormack was a beautiful lady
Michael, the sound is great and the pictures are wonderful! An enjoyable video of my special Irish tenor!
Thanks for listening Phyllis, I'm really pleased that you like the video.
Mike, thank you for sharing this program! It is lovely to listen to Lily McCormack pay homage to her extraordinary husband.......btw.......great photos!! Love the colorizing!!
Thanks for watching the video Mike, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I love doing the colourizing but it's very time consuming.
John McCormick was my mother favorite vocalist back in the 50s, long ago as it seems now. She had several of his records which she'd play around Christmastime. Those recordings dated from the same era as these, 1910 to 1921, complete with the static of those times, which has been removed by newer technology, so John's voice rings clear, still.
Thanks for listening and for your comment.
So very special - thank you so much
It's my pleasure Barbara, thank you for listening, I'm really pleased that you like it.
You have cleaned this up beautifully. Thank-you for uploading. J
It's my pleasure John, thanks for listening, I'm glad tha you enjoyed it.
Michael! First of all congratulations come back.
I'v found picture you mentioned.
12:51 ~ 13:03 Rachmaninoff, Kreisler and McCormick. Very impressive and beautiful picture.
Thanks for selecting this picture.
Thanks for your message Chang, a UA-cam friend, Irish Mike in the USA kindly sent me a copy of the painting.
Did you see my message on your latest video?
@@michaelmcgrailengland Absolutely Michael! And then I was searching picture you mentioned.

Hello Chang, how are you?! How did you spend the holiday season?
Walking in the mountains, maybe... 😉 I greatly enjoyed watching your videos ❄️❄️❄️ and listening to the music you picked to further enhance them!
All the best! 🍀🍀🍀
@@hrbooksmusic7878 Hi Harriet! Long time no see. How have you been? Thanks for watching my videos. Korea has usually snow this winter and then I am so happy. Does Germany has snow too?
Good night Herriet!
Hi, Chang! Good to hear from you!
In my part of the country we hardly have snow... only gray skies, fog, and rain... I‘m so looking forward to spring! And I enjoy to watch the beautiful landscapes sparkling with snow in your videos!
Best regards from Germany! 🍀🍀🍀
Lily mc cormack
Another lovely selection although I prefer the earlier recording of 'I hear you calling me' it will always remind me of my late husband, who finally got the courage to sing it in his later years, in a slighter lower key, because his voice had started to deepen as he grew older. Nonetheless he made a 'good fist of it' as we say here in Ireland. 💞
Thanks for listening Helena, I'm glad that you like these songs and that one of them brought back such happy memories. I'm not a singer but I think that it must be a difficult song to sing in any key. Actually the recording of the program that I found just had Lily's introductions, not the songs and I included the 1921 'I hear you calling me' because it's probably less well known than his other recordings of the song.
Welcome!
Interesting ... Thank you. Congratulations.
Beautiful art-work, congratulations.
@@Rosangela161 It's my pleasure Rosa Angela, thanks for listening/watchimg, I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
@@michaelmcgrailengland Applause and encore. I love it and... Him 😊🌹
An introduction by John McCormack’s widow Lily, his one true love. If this radio broadcast was five years after the great tenor’s death it was 1950. Following his passing, his widow wrote a book of their life together entitled “I Hear You Calling Me”, now out of print.
Thanks for listening, I hope that you enjoyed the video.
The program is from 1950 but the recording I found only had Lily's introductions, I had to add the music.
I'm lucky enough to have the book that you mention. Sometime in the 1960s I bought a batch of 87 McCormack 78s and the seller kindly "threw in" the biography.
@@michaelmcgrailengland It’s nice to hear Lily’s voice as she introduces her late husband’s recordings and thanks to you for adding those recordings to this posting. Very nice job 👍.
@@Brace67 It's a pleasure, I'm glad that you enjoyed it, thanks again for listening.

What a very fine looking man John McCormack was, he was blessed with the most brilliant voice, he was a man with love in his heart for God/Jesus/ Blessed Vergin Mary and his fellow man/woman/child wherever they came from.
Thanks for listening and for your comment James.
The great Count John McCormack was good friend with lrelands other great music figure the great Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman
Thanks for listening and for your comment Gabriel.
When they begin the begin
Thanks for listening Edward, you haven't said so but I'm guessing that you enjoyed the video.
When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender,
It brings back a night of tropical splendor,
It brings back a memory ever green.
