  • A quick introduction to the use of this weapon combination, shot very quickly at Fight Camp 2018. Sorry about the background noise.

This was shot at the end of the last day, and I was a bit hoarse from shouting, camping, and beer. When the aircraft overhead gets very loud, I have added subtitles.
The targes we are using are the correct diameter, but the real things were a fair bit heavier, and offered some protection against even musketballs.

The abundance of Draw Cuts in Scottish Broadsword fighting makes sense when you consider that armor was largely phased out by the time they were the norm. The most you could usually expect to encounter in the way of protection was thick Wool clothing and maybe a Wool cloak.

The “Brits” is a very poor term for referring tae the Seis.
Dunnae let ‘em maek ye think tha THEY are the tru British.
In fact, the Scots ARE British. They probably have more British heritage than many of the English.
The British are the native people of Britain. Their clearest modern descendants are the Welsh, who speak a language close to what was spoken in what is today Scotland, before the Scotti brought Gaelic from Ireland.
Some British (Pictish) words can still be heard in the unique form of Irish which is Scots Gallic (another confusing term giving it does not refer to ‘Gaul’).
Now, as for the outlawing: the evidence suggests not that there was a cultural motive in the prohibitions brought about in the 1700s, but rather a military concern.
After the English brought Scotland into the empire, there were two Jacobite revolts in the 1710s and the 1740s.
Because of this, there were a couple of attempts to surpress the *Scottish Clan System* specifically to take down organisations of armed men.
For this reason, we see some laws cracking down on MILITARY aspects of Scotland.
The broadsword was just one of the weapons of the day, in the Disarmament Act, all weapons were banned, but it was apparently impossible to enforce and wasn’t respected locally. Unsurprising, because everyone carried in those days, for personal protection in a wild (arguably purer) world.
Highland Pipes were for a brief time considered a part of that military activity. I do have to point out, the bagpipes are not especially Scottish, you might think of them as a Persian instrument, played in Spain, Wales and, yes even England, before they even arrived in Scotland.
There were however some curious depictions of something called “The Triple Pipes” from about the 7th century onward on Pictish slabs.
They’re some type of reed pipe, but not actually bagpipes.
So, energy and anger would be best invested elsewhere than in “the pipes” of Scotland, being the bagpipes.
Finally; tartan was not banned, Highland Dress specifically was very briefly banned, as a part of the Jacobite clan system. This also only applied to men and boys (fighting people, threats, women were exempt).
After a little over a mere 20 years, Scottish lords got the act repealed.
There are certainly things we can do to make modern Scottish and Native British identity stronger, but sulking about historical myths isn’t going to do any good.
Learn the martial arts of your people, learn the names of the gods (the true, pagan ones), and find out how to honour your ancestors.
This will bring glory to you and yours.

It's known that some highlanders would hold a dirk, or a small dagger in their off-hand, so the would need their hand free to hold a knife, in addition to sword and targe.
There was a class held by some of the people from Lloyd's Shasti Vidiya video as well, where they seemed to be playing a game of how many weapons they could hold at once. The most I saw someone manage was five, but he said he could do more.
He had a tulwar in one hand and a shield, knife, pick and punch dagger in the the other

Blows tended to land closer to my fist, so the shield won't be levered over and hit me anyway. But that was with a handle, which also meant the higher blows, closer to a right angle to my arm, would be held in place.
Also, I just don't attack the shield side, because a large shield is a pain to get around if attacking on that side.

This sounds weird but an acquaintance of mine who is now dead would have loved your channel... Bruce Garrison , he was a documentary filmmaker... a larger-than-life character... and loved learning about different ancient weapons and forms of warfare... and the Picts.
Some years ago we went to University of Pennsylvania Museum where they were having talks and demonstrations on everything from Roman topiary to their various weapons and shields... he really loved that sort of thing.
I wish your Channel had been around when he was alive.. I know he would have really appreciated it ... that was the first thing coming to my mind looking at your content .

Very well actually as it was extremely effective against the bayonet which is essentially a 5-6 foot spear. The targe pushes the bayonet to the side and the broadsword comes down onto the head/shoulders of the enemy (generally Redcoats) and then you progress onto the next line....in theory anyway. I'm sure it is somewhat more difficult in reality lol

Blitz 0012 I don’t understand why that needs a video, a like is just spear 2 longer edition a halberd is a combination of a spear and an oddly shaped axe that allows the weapon to be used for more than just stabbing at somebody straight on, you could spike them if it had a spike on the back, cut them with the blade or stab if desired. Weapons don’t really fill the same niche on warfare. Not really able to say one is better than the other since if you want to stab the pike is the obvious better choice as it has more range and a better head for stabbing while a halberd is better as a general weapons offering more options. It’s like comparing a falchion or Sabre to a war hammer or mace they just don’t fill the same need beyond killing some poor sod.

    Targe and target: etymologically related?

    • @mankyscotchgit4986
      @mankyscotchgit4986 6 років тому +46

      >Targe (from Old Franconian *targa "shield", Proto-Germanic *targo "border") was a general word for shield in late Old English. Its diminutive, target, came to mean an object to be aimed at in the 18th century.
from wikipedia. so you were right, the target is named after the shield.

    • @glasgowhema
      @glasgowhema 6 років тому +11

They are more than just related, they are the same. Thomas Page, who wrote 1746 - The use of the Broadsword (with a section on Broadsword and Targe which is nothing like what's in the video) calls it a Roman Target, and a number of other contemporary writers call in a target, as well as the earliest literary references to it.

Okay, here's a few problems with this system for those watching:
1 - It is not backed up by any real written documentation of Highland Sword and Targe. The only system written down was by Thomas Page, and is nothing like what is here. If you wish to see videos of this system, check out Jay Maas at the YT channel Broadsword Academy Manitoba. (an example is the stance is wrong, Page instructs a square on stance, not a 1 leg forward stance)
2 - While it is possible the lugs on a Broadsword are for levering targes, there are a few problems with this conjecture. Some Broadswords have very insignificant lugs, why would this be the case if the were important to targe fighting. You can lever a targe perfectly fine without lugs, you can do it with and arming sword of a basket hilt with no lugs. Levering a targe is INCREDIBLY difficult to pull off in full speed combat. Some of the most pronounced lugs I've seen on any antique Broadsword are on the 1828 Highland Officers Broadsword, over 80 years after Targes fell out of use. What were they for, I don't know but I reckon they were for style/added protection - a lot of antiques have these features beaten down so they clearly took quite a hammering.
3 - There are virtually no record of people fighing with the dirk and targe, in one hand, at the same time. You may have had it in you're hand for convenience in case you were disarmed, but almost certainly not for fighting with.
4 - The illustrations mentioned are the Penicuik Sketches, the are very questionable to use as fighting instructions, and I have never seen an antique targe with an offset grip.
5 - Rule number 1 is not backed up by historical documentation. The three sources (of which only one is a system of fighting (T. Page), the other two make off hand mentions of them) for broadsword and targe make no reference to moving the targe with broadsword and show illustration NOT moving the Tagre with the sword.
6 - Rule 2 is contradicted by the aforementioned T. Page who states - in no uncertain terms - "The guards made by the sword are often omitted... and the Blow is received upon the Target". You can block the outside with the sword, but it is not a hard and fast rule.
7 - Rule 3 is contradicted by the aforementioned point 6 - if you block your outside with the Targe, you cross your weapons, a way around this is to raise your sword into a hanging guard and throw above your own targe.
    - Kindred

An other thing with the Targe is some had a 9" spike in the center. In my own research with my 15 c. Targe and the demonstrator at the Battle of Coloden there is a way to cut potentially three foes in three steps with the Dirk, Targe, and Broadsword. The order starts with the Targe in the right hand hit the line of battle. Sword come down on the second man in the line directly in front. Break rule 3 cross with the Dirk to the third man in the line to your left.

It would be nice if you chose some lesser popular ones, like Russo-Japanese or Franco-Prussian war. Spanish Civil War perhaps? There's plenty to pick from. If one would take the blade from a basket-hilted broadsword, and put a simple cross-guard on it, it would be a knightly arming sword. As sword blades were often manufactured in bulk and then fitted with varying types of hilts locally, the distinction between "broad swords" and "arming swords" is largely a pedantic one. A given blade might, depending on what hilt was put on it, and where the hilt was installed, become a basket-hilted broadsword, arming sword, mortuary sword, firangi, or takoba.
