There was a time that even the cheapest Harley had front and rear crash bars to prevent any damage, but the company noticed that they can make more money now, because everyone drops the bike sooner or later.
I dropped my 15 street glide. Course I was drunk, wife on the back, and I hit a bad patch of road work which threw the bike to the left. Wife leaned and that was it. I was on asphalt and strong enough to set the bike down. Course I had front crash bars. only damage was a little scratch on the bottom of the bag.
Do not grab or even touch the front brake when doing that manuver. Rear brake only. Friction zone. Head and eyes turned all the way. Also engine guards, Saddelbag guards and primary guard. So before i get negative comments, I've been there too.

The scuff on the right side saddle bag was likely from your boot on that side either hanging on as it was going down or dragging across in shock as you were trying to get up. Sorry to see this sir but glad you are ok. Had my first, and hopefully last, brown pants moment yesterday on my 2024 Transalp, hitting some mud on a turn. Front-wheel wobble on a lean in is an adventure of sorts. Righted it by luck more than skill and god only knows what was going through the driver's mind behind me. Wishing you well and safe journeys.
While at a Harley dealer looking around I spotted the new (back then) Livewire electric bike. I decided to hop on it to see how it felt (mistake No.1). After getting on it I looked down & noticed that my vest buckle might be close to leaning on the console ( mistake No.2), so I reached down to get it away so it wouldn't scratch the bike without noticing that the side stand had moved a bit & next thing you know the bike shifted, & down it went pinning my leg so I couldn't get out from under it !! On the way down my back hit the lounge that was behind me sliding it towards a row of bikes & I'm thinking ( coz everything like this happens in slow motion of course! )...." Great, this is going to be a domino effect !" Luckily the lounge pulled up just short of the bikes & staff came rushing over to make sure I was ok. I've never felt so embarassed in my life ! ( well, a couple of other times).I wanted the ground to just open up & swallow me !!...Needless to say we looked at a couple of bikes coincidentally near the front door & we were Out of There !!! LOL

Many years ago when I was 7 or 8 yrs old I was waiting for a motorbike to turn left in front of me. The rider was going slow and then with no warning the bike slipped from under him and in a split second he and his bike was on the deck. That scene remains in the front of my mind when I’m on my bike. I never trust tyres or the road surface 100% . (I’m 65 now). Sorry to see that man. I learned my lesson on my first Harley. Rookie mistakes with my first bike dropping it twice and a very costly mistake. I bought my new 23 Roadglide -ST last year and they don’t come with crash bars for the bags. That was one of the first things I bought for my bike. Front and back Santoro crash bars with replaceable tips. Knock on wood haven’t dropped it yet. It’s not a matter of if but when.
I appreciate you! Yeah, I think I’ve had crash bars on previous bikes and kind of took them for granted. Never really needed them. OMG… your video just gave me such an intense episode of déjà vu! Back in 2009 I did almost the exact same thing on my nearly brand new XR 1200. In my case, it was a combination of wearing new gel gloves and I apparently had a touch of front brake on while rolling through (at about 15 mph) a right hand corner, which was OK while still on asphalt, but as soon as I hit a small patch of gravel… front wheel locked and I found myself slammed to the ground and sliding about ten feet. Wrecked my helmet, new gloves, low side boot… brake lever and exhaust nicely scratched on the then brand new Harley. Fifteen years later my ego is still recovering🙄… Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@r.stanley1049 thank you so much for sharing! That really sucks. Interestingly enough I was trying out some new heated gloves for the first time on this ride. You can try light wet sanding on those deeper scratches on that left saddle bag with like a 2000 grit paper and then follow it up with white polishing compound. An orbital polisher will work better than elbow grease.
At the end of March 2024, I went to a local Harley dealership to sign the paperwork for a new '24 road king special. They had the bike outside and I went to check it out. I sat on the bike for a moment thinking of finally owning a Harley Davidson. Stepped off, admired it from the left side, walked around to the other side and while admiring it, the bike fell over in the parking lot. I thought about heading back to Ohio but decided to continue North into Canada. I rode the TransCanadian highway back to Sault St. Marie then South to Ohio. When I got home my bike had a total of 114,400 miles on it. My insurance company totaled out my bike and issued me a check. About a month later I bought a 2021 street glide special. I plan to keep racking up the miles and seeing this great nation God has blessed us with. Like I said it happens.

My condolences. I once dropped my Fatboy when I made the mistake of barely touching the front brake lever when coming to a stop in a gravel parking lot. The front wheel immediately stopped rolling and started skidding, the front end kicked to the right, and then the bike was on its side before I could stop it. The damage was minor, and I only ended up replacing one of the muffler shields due to scratches.

Front and back Santoro crash bars with replaceable tips. Knock on wood haven’t dropped it yet. It’s not a matter of if but when.

I had stalled the bike (never happens) earlier in the ride with these gloves and figured I’d be ok… but that was my warning sign I didn’t have firm throttle control. There were certainly other factors here but it was like a perfect storm. Life lessons and crushed egos but it’s all good! I appreciate you-keep riding safe! 🤙😎

That’s the most important, I remember getting my first street bike when I was 24 back in 2014 it was an 2014 R6 brand new right off the showroom floor, got all the paperwork all done, went to the side to get on it, and when I did my right leg which my jeans caught the right foot peg and made me lose my balance, as I think of it now it was funny but at the moment it wasn’t, dropped my brand new bike and didn’t even leave the dealership yet, it was soooo embarrassing man and I was so mad at myself for that. Happy riding everyone and be safe!
@@OmenAfflictions oh man that’s crazy!! In the dealership! I’m so glad you kept riding!! I just saw your comment about getting a brand new 2024 softail standard-That’s an amazing bike! @revfree Thank you so much! And that is awesome that we are both the same about bikes lol! I still love them sports bikes, but I don’t know if I’ll ever get another one but I know for sure another Harley, it’s been a blast riding tho for real! I think I missed about 4 years of riding after I sold the R6 but I picked it all back up fast again. Safe riding to you too! 🏍️ 🏍️
When I purchased my Heritage I placed an order for engine and saddle bag guards. I put the guards on. I dropped my bike 2 days later. Thank you guards. No scratches. I dropped it 6 months later. Again no scratches.
I had been looking at crash bars and was holding off becuase of the cost. But lesson learned!! Absolutely need to get them on ASAP. I appreciate you sharing! 🤙😎
And motorcycle drop guards on the crash guards. Stops the bike from going over more than about 45 drgrees. Pretty easy to get back up. I don't care if anyone things they're wussy....

You can try light wet sanding on those deeper scratches on that left saddle bag with like a 2000 grit paper and then follow it up with white polishing compound. An orbital polisher will work better than elbow grease.
Thank you! That’s excellent advice! I will be following through on this- appreciate it so much!
I believe we've all done something similar one time or another. Here's hoping you can buff most of it out. Safe riding.

The left saddle bag received several fairly significant gouges on the bottom. Just a couple weeks ago I dropped the bag off at a reputable body shop for repairs. I feel your pain.
@@joeyates1428 OMG bro that’s awful. Thanks for sharing-I can’t imagine how that must have made you feel. I’m glad you’re getting the bag fixed! I’m sure you’ll be glad to have it back like new. Do you have crash bars on your Road King Special?
I made the mistake of not getting crash bars but I’ve ordered them now! Gotta protect the bike if this ever happens again. Appreciate you being real and sharing your experience brother!

Much respect to you sir for posting this video. I think we all feel your anguish and pain but what possessed you to make a turn where you did? We've all made bad judgements from time to time so you are amongst friends! Twice I dropped my Harley due to black ice and another time I got smacked by an articulated lorry turning into me! 🇮🇲🇮🇲
@@skyhill4279 Thank you sir! I’m hoping the video will help someone if they ever are in this situation. As far as your question about turning around in the area I did, I had turned down a road that I was unfamiliar with, and within a few hundred feet it turned to soft freshly graded dirt and gravel. I wanted to turn around as soon as possible and that side street was my first opportunity. I think I was more focused on getting back to pavement than operating the motorcycle in the correct way. Definitely a wake up call for me- not my best decision for sure!
It sounds like you’ve had some crazy experiences too! You actually were in a crash with a lorry? Good Lord I’m glad you’re still here to tell the story! I appreciate you sharing- keep riding safe my friend!! 🏍️🏍️😎😎
@@revfree I was lucky, driver said he didn't see me. My floating rib broke and went through my kidney, my head went through the front of the lorry, wasn't wearing a helmet as there was no requirement to wear one back then and my bike was impaled on the front of the lorry. I remember the world going upside-down as I flew through the air....ouch. I got up when I landed, pulled the driver out of his cab to punch him then suddenly I felt the pain of my injuries and passed out, when I woke up I was in a hospital bed.
Ride safe and keep the rubber side down!

I think anyone who owns a heavy bike has dropped it, and if they haven't, they will in the future. Crash bars are worth their weight in gold. I've learned dirt, gravel, and sand are a no,no. The saddle bag could be repainted. Thanks for sharing 👍🏿

It happens to the best of us. If you put on any miles then it's to be expected. I had a 2019 street glide special. I took a road trip from Ohio and rode to the West coast this past late summer. In Oregon a deer hit me and me and the bike went down. Praise God nothing real bad happened to me. Just some road rash and bruised ribs. The bike got lots of road rash but I could still ride it.
