French Country Details on Doors - Design How-to

- See how to enhance doors with a French Country style. By adding trim and appliques with proper techniques, you can convert a Shaker style door to a French Country design.

The steps to add French Country details these doors are as follows:
1) Select the corner appliques and escutcheon plates (parts that are mounted where the handles are installed) that suit the design you're looking for
2) Choose a moulding to integrate with the appliques (in our case we used astragal moulding that we cut in half
3) Miter the moulding to fit on the inside of the door frame
4) Mark where the corner appliques need to be cut out of the moulding
5) Cut out these sections of the moulding using a table saw and a carving knife
6) Make sure to number the location of each corner applique in case they are different sizes
7) Glue in the moulding and corner appliques
8) Layout the door pull escutcheon plates and glue in place
Steps for finishing the closet doors:
1) Sand all the parts smooth
2) Sand the outside edges of the door to slightly round them over to make them feel nice
3) Using a thick primer and a brush, paint the appliques so the seams blend in with the door
4) Sand all the primed areas
5) Prime the whole door with a quality primer
6) Sand down the primer to ensure it is smooth
7) Paint the doors with a quality paint

It sounds like you have what's referred to as "slab doors" - a basic flat surface. You can dress them up by adding small strips of trim to make several rectangles on each door to simulate a frame and panel door. Ah, ok. I thought you might have had some insight into the potential problem. As I mentioned in the repair video, I think I must have mistakenly put glue on the dado of the middle rail. Cheers. Scott
