      Oh I'm loving the bigger table. The only regret I have is that a 520 upgrade came up on eBay for the same price as my 510 a week later!

      Hi @@mattmakes6065 I tried adjusting the riving knife but loosening the spindle knob exposes the quill bearing and the shaft does not remain tight (moves horizontally).

    • @mattmakes6065
      @mattmakes6065  3 роки тому

      That's no good! Well I was recently informed that adjusting that collar isn't the best way to adjust the riving knife. There's actually a stop screw on the blade guard that you can adjust in or out. It'll hit that collar and set the position.
      Also, I think there should be a spring clip in the headstock that should prevent the quill from coming out like that.

    • @milindkhurd
      @milindkhurd 3 роки тому +1

      @@mattmakes6065 yes it does have a clip. The way shown by Shopsmith is to use the bottom screw. Kind of works so I thought this is the way I may have missed. Thanks it clears my doubt. I reverted my change.

      Awesome! Fyi, another user I respect informed me that the riving knife/saw blade alignment isn't accomplished with that stop collar. It is accomplished by adjusting a screw on the blade guard in or out. Take it or leave it. Enjoy!!

      Can a person just collect a 510 table setup and put it on a 500? I acquired a 500 over the weekend and just started learning about it. I am fairly certain it’s incomplete as it has no tailstock or disc sander.

    • @mattmakes6065

      Sure. The beauty of the shopsmith is that anything they made or currently make works on anything they made or currently make. I bought mine as a 500 from the 1960s and converted it to a 510, which didn't come out for a long time after mine was made.

    Great video and couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Just bought a mark v 2 days ago. It has the same main table and 3 other extension tables. • @MyGrowthRings
    @MyGrowthRings 3 роки тому +10

    Nicely done. BTW, the collar to the left of the arbor isn’t designed for alignment of the blade to the riving knife. That adjustment is made on the lower guard by adjusting a set screw that is closest to the quill. You’ll have to remove the guard to see it.

    • @mattmakes6065
      @mattmakes6065  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the clarification. What is the purpose of the collar adjustment?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings 3 роки тому +4

      @@mattmakes6065 Its not an adjustment. It should be kept tight against the bearing to eliminate end play in the quill shaft.

      It also helps to install the wider rubber spacer on a way tube. It spaces the carriage the correct amount from the headstock. That spacer makes it so much easier to get the blade through the blade insert on the table when setting up your table saw. The spacer is available from Shopsmith, and works on both the 510 & 520 table systems.

  • @fins9584
    @fins9584 3 місяці тому

    On the back face of the lower guard (where it meets the head stock,) there's a set screw. You should use this to adjust the guard in and out to align the riving knife to the blade, so the blade can be fully seated on the shaft. It's a better, safer method than moving the blade on the shaft to align it to the riving knife.

    There are holes in the the miter gauge with set screws. Run a steel rod through the gauge and tighten it down just touching the saw, move it to the other end of the blade and a just it appropriately. The holes are also great for repeat cross cut lengths. Yes Scott is a great resource. You didn’t mention waxing all surfaces where movement is involved. Critical for smooth use.

    Looks like a ton of work, not too familiar with Shop Smith, I do remember seeing all kinds of ads for them when I was younger. They were a big investment even back then. Saw a lot of TV Ads for them as well. I stumbled across the upgrade on Lowe's web site and it was $1600.00! So I hope when completed it was well worth the costs plus this must have taken a lot of time. Thanks for sharing. Does appear it needs some serious dust collection added.😃

      Dust collection is a struggle with everything in my shop. That Lowe's upgrade is too rich for me at the moment. All in, I've got my Shopsmith in the state it is now for that same Lowe's price.

    Congrats! I love my 510. Looks like you got a nice clean set of tables.
    One thing you may want to look into is that the change from the 500 to 510 tables came with a new set of arbors for the blades and sanding disc. The arbors are slightly longer. This will eliminate the need to move the arbor left and right while installing. Since the set screw surface on the arbor is tapper, if the arbor does not seat fully, the arbor can move inward on you which has the effect of loosening the set screw.

    • @mattmakes6065

      Yeah, I just bought a new (to me) 510 and discovered the arbor issue pretty quickly. Unfortunately, I already had about 4 arbors for the 500. Oh well, new owner will get them, I guess, since they're of no use to me now. Fortunately, the arbor on my old-ish (pre-carbide) Shopsmith dado set seems to be long enough.I'm guessing I bought it in the mid-80s, so post-510 introduction, when they'd made the change.

    Maybe I missed it. I didn't see the rubber bumper/spacer between the carriage and headstock before or after the upgrade. I think this is essential for proper spacing.

    I came across your video - today. You really are missing an important if not the important piece - the 510/520 carriage.
    I don’t know how your able to use the 510/520 table without it.
    I skimmed so I may have missed that section - the carriage?
