I've seen a lot of comments on here in the past year saying "he's so hot but why does he have to be racist" or something similar. And I just want to point out that, given the ages of the Cullens, they would have all been born into racist or prejudice periods compared to today. I mean, Carlisle literally became a vampire because he was hunting them and witches for his father who was an Anglican priest, meanwhile the vampire that bit him was minding his own business in the sewers. Looking back in history, any member of the Union or anyone from the times the other Cullens lived as humans would have views on other topics that would get them cancelled today. The fact that Jasper is so proud of his confederate background is concerning, but if you were the youngest major in any cavalry in 1863 and lived long enough to put it in your MySpace bio you might be proud too. I hope, given all the education that Jasper and the Cullens have had and especially Jasper's abilities, they would have changed any old fashioned views they had on people of minorities. Unfortunately this isn't the truth for Edward's old fashioned views on premarital sex.
Literally if Stephanie said he was drafted into the confederate army or ABSOLUTELY ANY OTHER WAY to make him a hot cowboy it would be fine but him enlisting into the confederate army is the absolute worst possible thing she could have said
@@allienelson6981 I definitely agree with you. I hate that she chose that backstory especially for a character she wanted us to love. Obviously people love him anyway. I think it makes sense for his accent to change go deeper and lighter. As a vampire whose lived over a century jasper could have lost his southern accent or just consciously change it from time to time to fit his mood
Agreed, could also just be because Jasper as a student wouldn't make sense/would cause for attention if he had a southern accent in Forks, so once he graduates and Bella knows about them he lets it go?
I love it. It feels surprisingly authentic. It's fitting that it isn't too consistent. A lot of southerners who have travelled a bit will tend to fade in and out of some type of southern drawl.
I’m southern as well, but I travel a great deal. I’m also half-Asian so I got teased for my accent. It makes sense that he was trying not to arouse suspicion while in high school and around others, but since he’s with family and more comfortable with Bella it resurfaces to that extent. Happens to me every time I have moonshine 😂
So when it comes to his changing accent, people say Jasper is the one speaking proper and “Major Whitlock” is the southern speaker almost as if he has 2 split personalities
Apparently he actually does, Major is his alter ego which is who he is when he fights or loses control, he's the stronger one and then there's Jasper, according to the book he developed it because of the trauma from the war

Not true. In the first two movies, it's faint but you can hear it (saying this as a Texan). Accents tend to go in and out if you've lived long enough and traveled a lot, which the Cullens obviously did.
