Best Pencil Portrait Drawing Techniques

The best portrait drawing technique I can give you has more to do with our eyes than any drawing techniques you may employ with your pencils. So while it isn't exactly a technique, there is a tool you can use while you are drawing to help you avoid this common mistake.
When you look at any subject there is an illusion taking place with the perception of the values. And unless you are aware of this phenomenon, you will make some major mistakes when it comes to shading. Even if your shading technique isn't that great, understanding and implementing this concept will result in a much more three dimensional looking portrait.
This is by far the most common mistake I see in my drawing students. Once the proportions are correct and they begin to shade their drawing, they fail to realize that the values they are looking at are heavily influenced by the surrounding values. But on their drawing, they are comparing those values to the white of the paper.
