this video was so easy to understand and kept me engaged the entire time. i was surprised bc usually watching tutorial videos is pretty boring for me and most of the time I feel like I sort of already know most of the stuff they're saying. but this video was actually really helpful and entertaining! totally underrated tho :(
THIS VIDEO HELPED ME SOO MUCH I CAN'T EXPRESS IT! I REALLY HAD PROBLEMS WITH DRAWING A FACE AND NOW THE TIPS OF MEASURING THE FACE MADE MY DRAWING SO INCREDIBLY PERFECT!!!YOUR TIPS ARE SO AMAZING I LOVE THIS CHANNEL AND WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT IT!!!
This is a actual video of describing of how to draw portrait like a professional, It's very rare to find video like this with such a useful information❤
i find this actually very informative, i never thought of thinking of everything of something i draw as a shape therefore limiting me from drawing much of a face since i can never pin it down, and the other aspect of scaling that you demonstrated is what finally helped me understand how to effectively check the scale of a person or thing’s face/size, also love your humor! keep up the good work too!
Corrie was great as your live model. I don't know if she's done that type of work before, but one thing I found out long ago when working with some models is that getting them to relax can be the toughest part of the session. Some models get nervous because the artist is just "staring" at them or they get anxious because they don't know what to do, or just making eye contact with them for long periods can be uncomfortable if they are not used to that. So what I do is just talk to them about anything but the modeling. Small talk while I take the major measurements, or establish the layout does not require them to be perfectly still and they can loosen up a bit and get comfortable. I also like to take photos so I can reference them later to fill in the fine details that take the most time without the model having to even be there. Photos are also great to keep the light source the same depending on where you are sitting the model and the light source(s) available. I enjoyed your instructions, but to be honest with you what really got me to watch this video was your thumbnail. It showed Corrie and she looks like a twin sister to a model I am currently using and have drawn many times over the past year. When I asked her to pose almost a year ago, she was always nervous, laughed a lot, couldn't hold a pose, got embarrassed and all those things new models tend to do. Now she is very relaxed, goes straight into the poses, follows instructions perfectly - "look there, look here, up, down, smile, serious, turn..." It's a blessing to have such a great model and it looks as if you found one in Corrie as well.
This was very helpful.. I draw just as a hobby but have only taken a art class way back in elementary school. I usually just stick to what is easy for me (mostly plants) but I have wanted to learn how to draw people to challenge myself and (hopefully) improve my skills in the process.. turning the image upside down just helped me see so much that I wasn't seeing before... so awesome
Awesome! I'm so glad you found the tips helpful. Yes, turning everything upside down is something I did as an illustrator, often. It was especially helpful as a very last step before shipping everything to the client. Good luck with it all! 😊
I have just recently watched a dozen “how to draw a portrait” videos. This one is by far the one that helped me the most. Not to mention you are a very likable person.
wow... I found 2 new tricks.... may be cuz I get used to meassuring angles and eyeballin.... 1. I never sighting widh by hight of the model.... 2. never turn any model or photo upside down cuz I feel it is unnecessary.... but I will give this a try... thank you
i just discovered your channel and realized you’re telling every tip that i couldn’t find in any other channel and found out on my own (like the order of the stages, revealing the shape of the shadows at first, turning everything upside down etc.) you’re my favorite now 🔥
This is exactly what I needed, everything was perfect, the explanation is easy to understand, there's humour, the model is beautiful, and now I understand what "seeing shapes" truly means. Thank you.
I love how you point things out, it's clear and straight to the point. The visuals also helps to point out the details on the instruction. I find it fun to watch and at the same time I'm getting knowledge from your video. Thanks for the informations!😁
As the title it is. It's tips. Not saying that its all applicable in all portrait drawing or subject to draw okey? But all of the contents of his video helps most specially those beginners. So stop saying nah. Trying to act better than him..
Thank you for making this simple to understand with thorough examples. Art gives me anxiety due to my perfectionist heart, and so many people simply say to do things but they don't explain it well and leave it more for interpretation. Thank you again sir, I love your videos🖤
this was absolutely wonderful video!! I keep getting stuck with portraits and super frustrated because of it but these are actuslly great tips (and it’s super engaging!)
You're welcome! These tips work with any drawing medium. Graphite, charcoal, etc. I used a combination of General's charcoal pencils and Conte sketching pencils.
When I first started at art school years ago I automatically started noticing shadows, eg on newscaster's faces on tv. I assume from really looking at the life model or other objects I was drawing. The different colours in shadows are fascinating as well. Maybe that helped when later I started nursing. A nurse needs to asess the patient by noticing things. Eg reddened areas over joints that might be caused by pressure, bruising from falls or other causes. Pallor. Expressions. All tell you something.
This was really helpfull! Especially for a beginner like me! Im trying to make a protrait with only online references so i cant know the height, but it still really helpfull tho!
I just discovered your channel and before I really thought you had millions of subscribers. Your videos are so well done. Easy to understand and the editing is F A B. I also love the humour that you add. Keep it up! ;)
For this portrait of Corrie it was mainly a conte sketching pencil. I also used black pan pastel for the larger dark masses like her hair. White charcoal for the highlights.
Helpful! 👍🏻I did not expect the drawing to be this similar to the model at first! And I'm mostly concerned about the similarity between my work and the model so if I get disappointed I simply give up continuing it! ☹

I'd say not even a face is symmetrical, nothing in nature is really, if you look close enough. But broccoli is fun to draw! Romanesco too!

Yes, agreed. Nothing is truly perfectly symmetrical and that’s not a problem 🌱

There is a very common thing in nature that is very symmetrical to the limit of unaided eyes.
It is the sun.
