My "Wow!" Is twofold. First, a beautiful area. The cacti were amazing! Second, your tent problems in the storm. I can't even imagine the frustration! Thanks for another great video!
It was one of those “wow!” trips for sure Pop Pop! The night in the storm was frustrating but all’s well that ends well and I was happy to emerge safe and sound
Man... makes me a little homesick! Superstitions are a wonderful place to enjoy the backcountry. You are right about the water - so rare to see that much in the canyons. Though except for the storm you had great weather!! There's nothing like the smell of the desert after a soaking rain, creosote bushes and and mesquite trees give a very earthy aroma. Fun fact about the saguaro cactus - they don't start growing arms until they're about 50 to 70 years old. So if you see one with many arms, it's probably over a hundred years old! Great video Layne - always look forward to your next :)
They certainly are a wonderful place to enjoy the backcountry! The rain & water really made it a unique experience for me out in the desert. Of all the aspects that blew my mind on this trip I think it was the cacti that stood out the most, they made me feel like I was hiking on an alien world
I live very close to the Superstitions and remember that stretch of weather quite clearly! What an experience that must have been to hike and camp out there through those storms. Great video! Even learned a few things I didn’t already know!
I’m jealous, beautiful place to live! Yes it was wild weather - the opposite of what I had expected - but was sweet to see all the water. Glad I could share a couple tidbits of knowledge
@@LayneComfort Impressed how much rain you saw as well for the desert. I may be guiding a trip this August in Virginia and am realizing I have not had to deal with humidity or rain in awhile.... I have gone soft lol
This was one of my favorite trips by you. I am totally jealous of all that water. Everywhere I've been to desert backpack, water availability is a huge issue. I know you said this was wetter than normal, but that is still a veritable oasis.
Thanks buddy, as my first backpack in the southwest it was a special one for me. I hope you get to check the Supes out for yourself - definitely don’t expect that much water though. There are only a few year-round trustworthy sources
Very cool! We just got back from our first backpacking trip in Arizona. We did the Hermit loop in Grand Canyon and it was so awesome. Next you should check out Utah! We did Coyote Gulch and the Needles in Canyonlands. Both highly recommended
Nice Jason, I was in the Hermit area of the Grand Canyon in April. A very beautiful place I'm sure y'all had a great hike out there. Utah is on my want-to-do list . . . which is very long
Great trip report! A different kind of beauty from what we see here in Western NC. Thanks for sharing....Oh, did you encounter and creeping crawling creatures?
Yes it is a different kind of beauty for sure! No creepy crawlers on this trip, it was the middle of the winter so that probably kept the snakes, scorpions, etc at bay
In the desert a man can bury his secrets deep and leave unencumbered. Looked like some tough trail finding there early on but a fun way to celebrate New Years towards the end. How did you meet George? Did he pop out from behind a cactus?
I’ll keep that wisdom in mind on my next visit to the desert Seth! He pretty much did, popped out from behind a cactus coming down the trail. I had a lot of my stuff laid out to dry in the morning sun after the night’s storm and we started talking about gear.
I enjoyed Arizona so much on this trip that I came back just a few months later - to a very Grand destination!
Layne, you did a good job with your reporting. Most enjoyable, intelligent, and I thank you. A nice addition to UA-cam.
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed
Nice to see you again, thanks for the trip sir.
Thanks Dave, always nice to hear from you

Excellent video! I am planning to backpack this Spring. Thank you!
Awesome Jason, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this beautiful area! Happy Trails
A wonderful video! Glad you had a good trip. :)
Thanks buddy it’s a beautiful area!
Looks like another amazing trip! Glad to see you made it out to the desert for the first time, its awhile place to backpack!
Thanks Mike, it was an awesome experience to check out the desert!

VA in August - you're definitely likely to be dealing with humidity & rain! Fortunately a little water never hurt anyone
@@LayneComfort Yea I am looking forward to it. I used to spend a lot of time in the Virginia woods back when I was in the Marine Corps.

Man I got excited too when I heard whiskey springs… shame to only have water.
Makes me wonder what my tax dollars are for

Love your vids....I know your vids aren't about gear....but you should show some gear.
Thank you, always good to hear from a fellow La(y)ne
So, was it 2 or 3 hours before you realized you don't wear shorts hiking in the desert...??...
😂 My philosophy has always been that skin will grow back, pants won’t!
