My favorite Ghibli movie of all is "Whisper of the Heart", and it's a teen "coming of age" story about a girl who wants to become a writer. She and her family live in a cramped apartment, but (they say this kind of story was typical of director Kondo) THERE ARE NO VILLAINS! At Kondo's memorial, Miyazaki gave a great compliment: said that Kondo never liked playing "Lifeboat", the mind-game about who to sacrifice to save everyone else, because Kondo wanted to save EVERYONE! He cared about all his characters that much, and it shows in this movie.
Yes, Everyone approves Kondo's observation eyes and delicate description exeed Miyazaki. Though, it is unclear magnificent outlook on the world like Miyazaki is expressible for him, he had power to invent the masterpiece of a different type.

It's a shame Kondo-san (the director of "Whisper of the Heart") passed away when he did, 'cause he was supposed to take over for Miyazaki-sensei.
