  • Bola Ige was killed days after writing his resignation letter
Did the letter cause his assassination?
Afenifere: A Divided House in Search of Unity ... Part 9
    Guest:
Dare Babarinsa, author of the House of War and other works, is the Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Gaskia Media. He was Associate Editor of Newswatch until 1990 when joined four other leading journalists to establish Tell magazine.
    Note:
The assassination of Chief Bola Ige, who served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Nigeria during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, remains one of the most prominent unsolved political murders in Nigeria's recent history. Ige was a highly respected figure in Nigerian politics, known for his integrity, commitment to justice, and advocacy for democratic principles.
On December 23, 2001, Ige was assassinated in his home in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Nigeria. He was shot dead by unknown assailants in what appeared to be a carefully planned and targeted attack. His death sent shockwaves throughout Nigeria and sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
Despite extensive investigations by law enforcement agencies and promises by successive administrations to bring the perpetrators to justice, the killers of Chief Ige have yet to be apprehended or brought to trial. The lack of progress in the investigation has led to accusations of a cover-up and raised suspicions of possible political motives behind the assassination.

I used to teach English at Okemesi in 1983. I know Esa Oke. Chief Bola Ige would be sorely missed. From far away Accra, Bola Ige would remain one of best Governors of Oyo State.

But some points here are different from what Iges daughter gave. She never mentioned anything about Ige having any plan to go to Esa Oke on the 23rd for any annual party on the 24th or that part of his security details were at Esa Oke waiting for him. Also about Ige giving ALL his security details money to go and eat becos food was not at home bcos his family had travelled to Esa Oke, this is different from the daughter's account. She said food was at home (and it is believable). Her mother was at home. Her own son was at home. How would the house be empty of food to eat in such circumstances. Would all the domestic staff also have been sent away, cook steward, gateman etc? This man may not know so much about the incident. The daughter and Muyiwa the son, whose movements that day were linked with his own movements too, would have better details. And I dont feel this man is close enough to Bola Ige if he does not know that Ige was a Rosicrucian member as the daughter confirmed. Noone who is close to a Rosicrucian member as this man claims, would not know he is a member. They dont hide their identities to that extent. You would see the signs of their membership around them in various ways. You would know it from having cursory conversations with them. You would see it from their library. So how he would claim to be so close and not know is incredible.

I really wonder about his version on the death of Bola Ige. It is quiet different from the daughter's version.

In oral storytelling, variations in narration are inevitable because each storyteller brings their own perspective, interpretation, and emphasis. Every individual recounts events differently, shaped by their personal experiences, emotions, and the context in which they share the story. I think this is why the version told by Mr Babarinsa may differ from the daughter's narration-both are valid yet unique reflections of the same event.
I think someone can write a book on "Bola Ige's Death" using sources like narration by the Late Lam Adesina, Chief Bisi Akande (as written in his book my participation) Bola Ige's biological and political children etc

The story is a bit confusing, the other time his daughter claimed that they have cooks and food in the house.

1999-2000's were the darkest year in this new republic. Fed gov't under Obasanjo was responsible for a lot of atrocities committed during that time. There's no way Obasanjo can say he did not know who killed this noble man. I remember Obasanjo saying he was forming a gov't of national unity, and that formed the reason for a man like Ige to honor that invitation to be part of his cabinet. A chicken politician like Omisore could harassed and embarrass him in Ife, and Obasanjo could not do anything about it. Obasanjo humiliated him by not act and fish out his assassins. There were so many killings under his administration.

If you watched this video and still came to the conclusion that Obasanjo had something to do with it then you are probably too sold into the APC propaganda.

@adetolaakinbiola7103, What has this got to do with APC. I wasn't born yesterday, and I don't need a 5-second video to tell me about what happened during Obasanjo's time in office. I lived through it. Unfortunately, history is no longer thought in school anymore. Most of what happened then would likely watered down or completely obliterated from the history book. It is a shame. The devil of the yester years is now an angel.

@@adetolaakinbiola7103What has watching this video got to do with it? Explain how someone knowing that Obasanjo knows about Iges death have to do with APC. If you know Obasanjo for who he is, and you can imagine that Ige died this way and Obj left his death in the realm of mystery without knowing who the murderers were, you must be childish. When Obj said with what he knows about somebody, God would never forgive him if he supports the ambition of that person, some people still felt it was the humiliation the person subjected him to in order to get 2nd term, or the financial corruption the person was linked with. No, it has something to do with the death of Bola Ige.

@@Thekogiman People make so much ado about the teaching of history in schools as if it is God or angels that would be the teachers. For those of us who offered history in secondary school, if we are going to be taught history about Bola Ige now, it wouldn't go beyond knowing the positions he held, the day he died and the way he died. That would be all. That can easily be known from Google.

Chief Bola Ige was one of the finest crop of Yoruba politicians of our time but most unfortunately he allowed what his leader, Chief Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo said about he and Sunday Afolabi being friends of Obasanjo will cost them be fulfilled. They both ended tragically as he predicted, what a pity.

I don't think Obasanjo knew about the murder. The removal of his cap at lle Ife appeared to be a precursor to the assassination.

Obasanjo didn't orchestrate it, but he knew those who plotted his murder (after the death), but was blackmailed to cover it up. Anytime the death of Bola Ige is brought up, it is like putting a dagger into Objs bosom. He would go to his grave with that dark secret. Does anyone think Bola Ige would be killed that way under a govt led by Obj and he would not get to the root of the matter? Obviously he did, but had to succumb to the blackmail of the murderers to cover their secret.

Hmmm! Everyone scratching the issue on the surface. And obviously refraining from mentioning a powerful man all suspected to order ige's assasination. He wanted to resign and somebody was threatened by that action. After his death, someone at the hem of affairs who should get to the Ruth of the saga didn't do so.
Pls we have known who killed uncle Bola. My own question is if in deed he was a member of Resicrucian gang, how come he didn't know of Imminent death. After his death, did the cults pained for that loss, if they did, was any action from them as vengeance on culprit(s)?
Many questions. For we still suffer that the beautifuls didn't get to power. And rest is the story.

And can we imagine that it was not done, and Obj did not insist that it should be done, if he truly did not know who the killers were? The probability was that Obj did not know about the plan to eliminate Ige but he knew those who killed him after the murder. But he was blackmailed to cover them.
