Back in my teens when I had no money, I got busted at my favourite guitar store taking notes from the Extravaganza book with a notepad and pen, but the shop owner was cool enough to let me carry on because I said I was saving my paper round money and I promised to buy the book as soon as I had it, and I did, and still own it to this day!
This is such an awesome story!! …I did the same with the Metallica and Justice for all tab guitar book… …bad taste or not, I totally relate and love your story regarding the Vai Extravaganza book!!!
Really glad I subbed your channel. I'm suddenly filled with the inexplicable urge to open up my box of old Guitar For The Practicing Musician magazines lol. The nostalgia is strong with this one Obi Wan.
Your videos are nothing but ebay trouble. After buying an ART SGX-2000 last month(which I gotta say is sooo much fun to just mess around with), I just bought the only copy of Vai's Guitar Extravaganza on ebay. :-)
Awesome book. I bought it when it came out, years ago. I can chart my guitar progress back then through learning those songs. Shy Boy definitely sorted my legato!
John Sykes used a very slight delay into his stereo Mesa Mark IIIs on the 1987 album, I think as a thickener as well. One side was dry, and the other was slightly delayed. I've been trying endlessly to replicate this with my Mark III and Subway Rocket, but just can't quite get the delay timing right. But yeah, if you did a video on anything related to John Sykes, that would be really cool.
Before Steve updated his website last year, he still had the Extravaganza book available for sale. They can be found, but really, it should see a reprint.
Thanks a lot for this treat! I’m about to record one of my favourite Steve Vai solos, Ladies Nite in Buffalo, and this info was absolutely necessary! 🙏
I happened to have the same book sitting on my desk right now - I pulled it out after watching your Eventide videos to brush up my Skyscraper licks! Also found it years ago in a local music store, great book.
Sush a great music book! So glad to have found it around 1p years ago. Definitively Collectible. Great rig and recording info from the DLR era. The live rig for the EEAS tour is more cloudy though, almost sure it is two Jose modded and two Lee jacksons mod
I was just Going Crazy ( no pun intended lol) looking for my copy of this last week, Saw this and decided too look for it again and finally found it. Ive owned it since it 1st came out in 89.
Those records are why I ever picked up a guitar. I have that book... it's falling apart but I still have all of it. I never got to experiment with all of Steve's settings 'cause well I frankly never had or could afford the equipment but at least I was learning all the "little black dots"... Cool video thanks.
@@CarbonBasedLifeform7810 Thanks for the heads up Blues. Working my way through Lindy Fralin now. I would love to hear more about Michael and what he does. Besides 10-15 minutes of cool 90s gear and old magazine flip throughs we get each week.
great contribution, I am studying in depth the delay and the truth your video opened my head, thank you very much, very good info and you have great audio and a very good equipment, congratulations
Shy Boy is a Billy Sheehan song from when he played in Buffalo New York area in the late "70's to early 80's . Billy was in a band called Talas, Shy Boy is from that band.
I just dug out my copy of extravaganza as I've just bought a Katata artist and now have access to loads of effects (including a virtual sde) I didn't have before and remembered the book has loads of settings.
Just hearing these riffs in isolation wooow...and so well executed.. Takes me straight back back to 88/9 13 years old when your idols where your big bros idols... Steve Vai come back..... and just give us just one or two more good old sexy guitar rock n roll albums with Sheehan and i'll settle for any singer or drummer. Do those, and then continue on the zen ghostwalk .🙏😉😁
H I N A - - holy shit you did it! I've come close with no explanation to the notes, now I'm gonna ape it off your vid! Best song on the album, aside from Two Fools THANK YOU MICHAEL
Maaaan! Two Fools is incredible, and it's sorta thrown away at the end. I wish DLR did more of that stuff. I guess it's Dave's version of a blues tune.
Another affordable way to get the SDE 3000 delay sound is via the Boss GT100 floor multi fx unit,it has all the algorithms and sounds Beastly!!! Michael that Steve Vai preamp by Synergy you are using on this video sounds killer I hope you have already done a review/playthrough on it if not you must it sounds rad👍🤘🤘🤘
I tore my house apart looking for the Steve Vai Extravaganza book... I know I still have it. No Dice.. Cleaning out an old dresser and BAM!!!!! Found it.. BAHAAHAHAHAHAH ...
MICHAEL NIELSEN, What rack mount gear did Kurt Cobain use for In Bloom the Pitch shifter effected used on the guitar solo of In bloom? its a nice pith shifter that doesn't sound digital glitches tracking issues
So I got that Steve Vai book for $1.00 out of a used bin (along with several other gems). I never thought to recreate the patches he used.... Gonna dig it out now....
Yea but what were the sought after features of that unit? For instance KORG made the SDD3000, a favorite of The Edge, and besides modulation on the repeats it has an input knob that doubles as a preamp giving the entire signal flow a special type of “warmth”. The pedal version of it also features such preamp. EDIT: It just dawned on me that maybe this unit didn’t have such preamp stage and that’s why it was sought after by them tone snobs as they didn’t want their sound colored any further. Wow I can’t believe i figured it out all by myself
Like a lot of the tab books from back in the day, sometimes they had cool explanations on how to phrase the stuff or what effects they used, even comments by the players themselves. Used to see a lot of those books on ebay, but lately people find out that real books still exist and buy them up ;)
Hi Michael, top notch sound on Hina. Also one of my favs from the one and only Master. Could you please tell me, do you have have stock friedman pu‘s on your guitar? I like that black very much and the colored pu‘s look like wow!! We haven‘t so many friedman guitars here in Germany, is yours a special Cali with a custom neck? I‘d like to push the trigger on a Cali........Cheers Frank

awesome
@Michael Nielsen: Thank You Sir For Doing This. I OWN THIS GREAT TAB BOOK AS WELL!! I GOT IN 1989!!! I'M GLAD I DID!! LLOYD SARNO, MEDINA, OHIO
This is such an awesome story!! …I did the same with the Metallica and Justice for all tab guitar book… …bad taste or not, I totally relate and love your story regarding the Vai Extravaganza book!!!
Props for covering Hina... Vai’s playing off the delay in that tune is epic
Really glad I subbed your channel.
I'm suddenly filled with the inexplicable urge to open up my box of old Guitar For The Practicing Musician magazines lol. The nostalgia is strong with this one Obi Wan.
That Hina riff is epic, thanks for putting this video out!

GREAT vid!! Love the “Hina” delay trick, but I prefer Steve’s use of that same delay technique in “God Blessed Video”. So rad!
Thanks a lot for this treat!
I’m about to record one of my favourite Steve Vai solos, Ladies Nite in Buffalo, and this info was absolutely necessary! 🙏
Memories of Friday nights a Davis Music House in Russell street Melbourne Australian.Got the Steve signed poster! What great memories
I'm still listening to Skyscraper on... tape :)
"Perfect Timing", "Hina" and "Just like paradise" still give me the ... schwiiiing !
schwang :D
What a great video, could listen for hours to your playing.Hope you will do a review of the new EVH pedal version of this legendary rack.
And those SDE units were HEAVY! I had one in a rack for years. Very heavy but one of the best sounding delays out there.
HUGE as well. Same depth as a fookin triaxis
RIPPING that Shyboy lick. Man this sounded good.
Had me at “Hina”. “Skyscraper” is so underrated.
skyscraper is so good
Damn. Now I have to go fire up the turntable 😂😎🤘
HUGE props for mentioning let alone playing "Hina."
💯! Always one of my faves from that album!
Also, awesome video man! Amazing tone! I have a pair of them in my rack I use for kinda ambient stereo delay, will definitely try some of these tricks
I happened to have the same book sitting on my desk right now - I pulled it out after watching your Eventide videos to brush up my Skyscraper licks! Also found it years ago in a local music store, great book.
Another Great Show!....such a cool gear M-Boy!...envy!
I need to pull that book out again! Like your playing too!
That massive long note in Hot Dog and a shake turning the time knob

Love you earlier period Vai stuff. Steve at my favourite. Thanks!
Fantastic video. Thanks so much for sharing !!!
Great video! Loved seeing you so “Nina”. One of the best DLR/Vai songs they did.
I was just Going Crazy ( no pun intended lol) looking for my copy of this last week, Saw this and decided too look for it again and finally found it. Ive owned it since it 1st came out in 89.
Absolutely loving this stuff man! Thank you.
Great video . Loved all those big wide sounds Steve Vai got in those days. Hina is just magic . ( Got that book too!)
This video just answered a load of questions i had .....................THANKYOU !!!!!!
I got the book way back when too, never had the gear to try out the settings but learnt the songs! Great Video!
Those records are why I ever picked up a guitar. I have that book... it's falling apart but I still have all of it. I never got to experiment with all of Steve's settings 'cause well I frankly never had or could afford the equipment but at least I was learning all the "little black dots"... Cool video thanks.
Just scored a “vintage” copy in good condition, on Etsy! Always saw this and never even cracked the cover. Thanks for the heads up!!
Sounds sweet! You have the licks nailed too 👌😎👍
Really awesome video Michael. Fantastic job on this bro!!!
Just heard tonight that you and Michael Toren are gonna be on Tone-Talk next!!! Talking about 80's rack gear! Can't wait!
Podcast? Never heard of it. Will look around for it.
@@bwgti yes but they also have a UA-cam channel. Dan from TPS was on there yesterday!

Really appreciate your ear for detail!
Great video, I love the sound of the SDE-3000
Pro tip: if you hold down the rocker button on both sides it goes like 10x faster
holy crud! Thanks!!!
That Hina song reminds me to Boys From Seattle.. thx for share Vai's delay set 👍
great contribution, I am studying in depth the delay and the truth your video opened my head, thank you very much, very good info and you have great audio and a very good equipment, congratulations
I have the Guitar Extravaganza as well!! Awesome book yup especially because how much I learned about effects from the settings list
Thickenerizer.
Your new signature pedal, possibly? I don’t even use delay and I would buy one for the name alone… Thanks for another great video!🤠
HAHA!
I just found your Channel. Great content! I subbed you
Thanks Jerry!
Nice, interesting and chilled presentation, thank you!
Hello Michael , big fan of yours here from Quebec, have you done the Roland SRV 2000 video yet ? This would be so interesting to watch ! Tx
Omg, I can totally relate to the revelation that was Steve Vai’s Guitar Extravaganza. Still have it!
Thought about Hina settings in the car the other day. Looking forward to watching this!
That book is awesome. I have had it since 92
Another wonderful video. Looking forward to your IRs. Thank you Michael!!!

Own or owned Guitar Extravaganza (buried in a box in a closet perhaps?). Great vid Michael!
So much fun! Set up these delays, fun for days!
I just dug out my copy of extravaganza as I've just bought a Katata artist and now have access to loads of effects (including a virtual sde) I didn't have before and remembered the book has loads of settings.
Yes! This book was in my local library, it was my bible in my teens around 15 years ago! I should check if it’s still there!

I was hoping for the solo from "Just Like Paradise".
Also, another great use of delay comes from Vito Bratta in the White Lion song "Baby Be Mine".
Wow Brother you really got Vai’s delays perfectly! Sounds awesome Brother!
I have Vais book. His best playing ever was on Eat arm and Smile IMO.
Totally agree
David Dougherty I think it’s because Ted Templeman “tricked” him into using first takes.
YES! I still have that Guitar Extravaganza book!
That’s the tone right there dude
I love Hina sooooooooo much. Thanks for that Michael👍
Best delay ever!! Great video bro 🤘🏻⚡️🔥
That guitar is Gorgeous!!
Now my Saturday is complete.
Great delay sound, authentic
Loving all these rack unit vids 😎

This is great thanks for this video
Hey Michael...always look forward to your videos. How about profiling that Synergy Vai module!
Two years later, how excited are you about the Boss SDE-3000D released recently 🙂
Still waiting to hear the Steve Vai "Just like Paradise" solo tone! Didn't get it with the Eventide review and didn't get it here :(
WOW awesome!!!!! - I had the book - but not the gear !!!!!

Great, something else I don't need to buy, but I will hahaha.
Hi Michael, most of these units all come from Japan and are made for 110 voltage. Did you have to modify it to US voltage specs when you got yours?
Hi Dave, mine were US voltage, so I didn’t have to change anything
Sweet episode. Wish it would keep goin😅
Great video, I love the sde-3000! What are the pickups in the Friedman guitar?
Bridge is JB, neck is Friedman Classic
just found a PDF copy of the Steve Via Extravaganza!!
I have that book. Bought it 20 some years ago.
Have the pages fallen out? I got it back when he was in whitesnake and the pages fell out within weeks
You forgot the Eventide detune feeding the stereo delays. =P
if you press up button and then press down at same time it scroll way quicker
Please make a video of the SRV-2000, Slash used in the AFD (i mean Mike Clink used it to create tone)
