Kirk was never the most technically proficient player, but in the 80's he did have some killer solos (Damage inc included). He influenced a lot of people to play guitar.
@@gbirdo4718 Oh god, Death Magnetic? Did we listen to the same record...? I think his solos on that one are some of the worst he's ever done, so sloppy, drowned out with wah and unimaginative... Not a patch on his stuff through to the Black Album. The best thing about Kirk's early solos are the melodies and patterns, which are so memorable you can probably hum most of them, even if you haven't heard them in a while. That's my test for a good solo... I can't do that at all with Death Magnetic, outside of The Day That Never Comes.
He probably has the worst "professional" vibrato ever. Having said that, his solos in "Fade to black", "One", "Sanitarium" and "unforgiven" are almost seminar level...Definately an influence fr me to pick up the guitar back in 88'....

Love Kiko's videos- huge fan. It's interesting for me how Kirk Hammet is criticised for his playing, I'm also critical of his bending, vibrato and general intonation BUT I will say that his solos on the classics - MOP, one and others are perfect for the song and I couldn't imagine them being different. I also hugely respect Kirk for surviving decades of having to deal with James and Lars personality/ relational conflicts.

I have to say this, I'm a fan of you since "Endangered Species, etc" but 12:07 in my opinion, it also figure out about how Hetfield & Hammet doing into their songs. even Hammet ever said, he love if his song can be played by anybody because of it's easy. Everyone can messed up with Unforgiven solo technically with thousand notes, but are they increase the original feeling?
Nice to hear about your vegetarianism. I notice though that your signature guitar uses abalone, so isn't vegetarian-friendly. Quite a few players (like Vai as it happens) and guitar builders/sellers are vegetarian or vegan, but their instruments aren't (abalone, bone nut, hide glue, etc.)

Kirk is a Legend! Kirk is an Icon!
Not typical, it's his opinion on what he....."Kiko" likes. I'm not a fan of Kirk's playing either. Never was growing up. More a fan of Hetfeld's playing. Actually, Hetfeld, IMHO, has way better vibrato, and the little solos that he's done through the years, are way more melodic based. Always wished he would do a solo project. I wasn't into Kirk's leads, because they weren't very melodic. They aren't bad. They've always just kind of been... "that's cool". Kirk's vibrato always bothered me. He's more linear. I'm just into players like Schenker, Gary Moore, Johnny Winter, Andy La Rocque, Bill Steer, Schuldiner, and so on. Players with a more melodic feel always caught my ear more.

The middle section solo in The Four Horsemen, all the solos in Fade To Black, the harmony solo in Fight Fire With Fire, Call Of Khtulu, Escape, the first two solos in Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Orion, the first two solos in One, To Live Is To Die, all the Unforgiven solos, etc. Those are tremendously beautiful solos! And all the solos I mentioned in my original comment are amazing! Just because a guitarist is fast and technical, and considered a virtuoso doesn't mean anything to me. Some of the most talented guitarists I find boring and tedious. Some of the most simple songs to play are some of the most inspiring and important songs in history! We have to agree to disagree. Hi Kiko, Mario here from Spain. Recently I've switched to in ear monitoring with my band and I feel completly awkward and clumsy while playing. I'm practicing everyday with the IEM system on at home, but there is no way. Sure I CAN play many of your solos with my amp, but I can't play any tecnical stuff with the IEM. I feel out of tempo, even my hand technique is different, don't know why! DO you play with in ear monitoring? If so, how is your experience? Do you feel such difference? Kiko, I keep getting my solos rejected out of my project because "they do not fit" "those notes aren't sounding right" are the sort of answers I am getting. I am using the Phrygian scale on a Phrygian Chord progression and they just simply and without a valid argument keep saying my solos don't fit. What would you do? How do you recognize "fitting solos" other than using scales? I am frustrated :(

Hi Kiko, Mario here from Spain. Recently I've switched to in ear monitoring with my band and I feel completly awkward and clumsy while playing. I'm practicing everyday with the IEM system on at home, but there is no way. Sure I CAN play many of your solos with my amp, but I can't play any tecnical stuff with the IEM. I feel out of tempo, even my hand technique is different, don't know why! DO you play with in ear monitoring? If so, how is your experience? Do you feel such difference?

Kiko, I keep getting my solos rejected out of my project because "they do not fit" "those notes aren't sounding right" are the sort of answers I am getting. I am using the Phrygian scale on a Phrygian Chord progression and they just simply and without a valid argument keep saying my solos don't fit. What would you do? How do you recognize "fitting solos" other than using scales? I am frustrated :(
