  • Tunnel portals are important scenery details, which most often is bought as a standard item ready made. Then just as often the portal will be somewhat misplaced, unless you´re modelling exactly the region from where the prototype portal has been taken.
This video presents methods and materials needed to make any type of stone arch tunnel portal to fit the scenery you model.

Thank you ! . very interesting, better than my brick paper attempts for sure. I think the sand plaster you refer to is called Polyfilla here in Britain, so I'll try some of that and thin it down a bit. Cheers and best wishes Chris..

I use MDF for creating such portals, use if a Dremel for making level differences, and use the small ttols for creating the stones, looks also very nice, your mrethod of painting is also working for this material. So thanks for giving me alll these nice ideas!

I just watched your video, it is very informative. I made cutouts for my own Tunnel portals, culverts, reinforced concrete arch culverts, bridges, covered walkway for my planned N scale layout. I’m using the cutouts from the double track Tunnel portals for piers. I’m using cereal boxes, pizza boxes, other light cardboard boxes for my cutouts & building material. The styrofoam & scraps of lumber will be used as supports. I’ll tell others of your video.

I am having a go at this, making one similar to one on a local railway. Working in n-gauge though so bit more difficult, I have made it by buying foam board from a hobby shop. It’s a little thin so I had to glue sheets together, but the pva does not seem to be holding very well. So I have changed to a wood glue instead, that seems stronger and dries quicker.

I didn't have the plaster sand stuff on hand, so I made-up a mix of sand and grey paint for the base coat. I dabbed it on generously with a foam brush. The effects were awesome! I could control the pattern on the stone by how I dabbed and how generously I added the paint/sand mix.

Minwax polyurethane will seal the foam and insulate it from the effects of solvents trying to eat it. This also applies to the solvents in spray paint as well.

Great tutorial, it has inspired me to have a go at doing my own modeling for a change rather then just buying them pre done. Quick question, I've painted a couple of tunnel entrances now and I'm at a stage where I'm ready for a wash to make it looked weathered. But before I make a mess of what I've done so far I just wondered what colour wash you would recommend. The colour of my tunnel entrances are limestone so quite a pastie yellow. So is a grey wash still the way to go to give it a weathered effect or would you recommend something different? Cheers Gary.
