I am a 84 year old retiree and am trying to build an HO scale model Railroad. your Tutorials have been quite helpful and informative. I have watched many model train videos, most of which are way out of my league. I appreciate your approach. I am watching from Rialto, California, USA. Keep up the good work. dmaxIII
I just retired and N guage trains is going to be my hobby. I've watched alot of videos a about the scenery part. There are alot of great tutorials. Your video and creativity and ideas rank up there with the best of them. Never thought I'd be getting tips from someone my grandsons age.Thumbs up my friend and keep it up. I'm going to use alot of your ideas.
Have been a model railroader for some time and while researching, I accidently came across your tutorial which I found very informative, detailed and well explained! Gave me some great and easy ideas using materials that are very affordable and readily accessible which I have not seen before. Excited to give them a go and use your ideas! Looking forward to seeing your other videos. Thank you
I don't do model railroads, but I am a wargames miniatures player and I've always felt realistic looking terrain just enhances game immersion, so I like watching tutorials like these to get an idea of how to do similar stuff for wargamming
WOW finally something i can start with! The white paper is dirt cheap now adays and so this will help me finnaly get started with what i was not looking forward tot to do. it may seem easy for some people but to do this with in a budget is not easy! Cardboard can be found all around just as paper. Plaster can be found at the dollar/euro store just like paint. This did help me a lot!
Hi from Australia. Thanks a lot for this video. It has given me the confidence to proceed with building a tunnel for my new HO layout. My grandson is very excited!
I just started re-creating an HO layout my late Dad and I built many years ago, but this time in N Scale. Your method of making a mountain out of normal easy to obtain materials is awesome! Thank you for your idea and posting.
I/m doing the same. My Dad and I built an HO layout and I’ve always wanted to recreate it. He would have loved it. Some of my fondest memories are of the both of us working on it after dinner. The journey is half the fun, creating it, getting it just right…in fact, I doubt I would ever be finished.
When working with plaster to model landscapes or walls (like the portal). it might help to add color immediately. This way, the plaster wouldn't shine through as white, if it gets scratched later on. If you like to have some shades, you might also try to add additional paint while the plaster is still damp - medieval artists called this technique 'fresco'.
I like your video kid. I made a lot of scenery. I was lucky that my brother worked in a gypsum factory and I got casting plaster by the 20 Kg bag. I never used the Styrofoam because I am in fear of sparks and fire. I did my initial casting using steel fly screen and profiling that as a first layer. It was strong as hell and could withstand someone leaning on it accidentally. I used to cast my tunnel entrances using casting plaster and an aluminium mould. The mould was essentially scribed in a thick aluminium foil. I like what you did though, and I always found making the scenery more fun than playing with the trains.
I tried your tunnel liner procedure and it worked out great. Your way is much more natural looking than using shaper sheets. I have multiple tunnel entrances and will be using it for all of them. Thanks for your tutorial.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video and you have some wonderful ideas. I have made quite a few train sets with mountains, and I think yours is much better.
@@TheCreativeModellerHO if someone wanted to record a cab view video of their layout, the tunnel's interior detail would increase the appeal of the video.
Thanks! I used your tutorial to make my train tunnel. It turned out great, and I have gotten tons of compliments on it. Thank you for your excellent tutorial!
Neat. I think ill get some foam and just carve out that. Especially because my mountain has a third set of track planned to enter from a different angle to form a mine
That was a great video showing how you bring all of your creations together. I am building my own railroad in N scale and have been 3D designing and printing most everything for it. I have even began creating 3D design tutorials. As a matter of fact I'm currently working on a tutorial showing how to 3D design a tunnel portal, and after watching this video you have given me a great idea to see if I can design a detailed interior tunnel portion. Thanks for all of your hard work and wonderfully edited videos.
Thanks for all the kind words, I appreciate it! I also do 3D modelling, I make game assets for video games... I use Blender and Unity. Later when I have some more free time I also want to design some buildings that can be 3D printed. but of now I'm focusing on growing my channel😀
I kind of wish maybe you added tunnel lights inside your tunnel when making it. Make it different from the others. Maybe use the tracks rails to power it?
Amazing work. Yes please share your secrets with us please. I'm in the process of 3D printing my tunnel portals but Ide love to lean how you make you paint your mountain. Thanks for sharing!!!
This fantastic tutorial has inspired me greatly! Thank you! I have subscribed, too. I like your teaching style; you showed the steps in the right amount of detail for my needs. 👍🏼
I can appreciate the time it took to do the inside of the tunnel, especially if the portal is at eye level. I wonder what effect it would have to mount tunnel lights in the exposed area, to show details.
Another nice one. I can hardly wait to see what is next. I will be interested to see how you make your modelling compound. I guess it would be similar to the one made by Marklin of Sweden. I am probably at about the same stage with my model as you are but I have about 25 metres of track in N gauge. I have been making some dioramas to fit in to the scenery. That has enabled me to work at a bench rather than on the model itself. Good luck.
Glad you liked the video! I'm working on that video at the moment! I'm thinking about some thing to do in the video to make it more interesting, a idea is to also compare some different ways to make it, and discussing the pros and cons of each method... let me know if you have some suggestions...?
Hello I like your Chanel. I like your work. Amazing. I have subscribe your Chanel.. I like landscape modelling. Sorry my Englisch I am from Switzerland.. Alex 🤗🤗👍👍🇨🇭
[thank, you for you're helpful video I own a 2 story house and I have 4 bed rooms upstairs that I'm not using so I done filled up one bed room with model rail road layout now I've got now 3 empty bed rooms to add on now so I'm going to be cuting a hole in the wall to get the trains to the other rooms so you're video will be helpful for this next build thank, you much for you're helpful video you have done a great job as well]👍
Do you think it's possible to make Sculpta-mold out of Homasote scraps? That stuff is essentially pressed paper. I doubt if it would be able to be chopped up dry like the egg cartons, but I'm thinking about giving it a try.
Found this video looking for ideas on making an RC rock crawling course for 1/24 scale trucks. Your rocks look awesome, how durable would they be if mini rc trucks were driving over them? I bet you could make an awesome 1/24 rock crawling course with your skills. All the best. Thanks.
Great video. Instructive without a lot of fluff. I am looking towards a southwestern layout and have lots of real stone chips that have the red rock color. Anyone using real (no to large) rock?
Very nice! The techniques you use appear to be very easy and not too time consuming. I never thought about completing the inside of a tunnel. Now than I've seen this, I will do so soon. Thanks for the great video. I will also subscribe to your channel with a like! Just got back into model railroading and about to build my layout. Went with all Kato this time. Thx
I just bought a Marklin HO 29185 and are going to make a Norwegian scenery. I dont know if i want to build it in HO or N scale so i will also buy a N scale starter set to see if it is not to small to work with and also how easy it is to get accessories for the this scale. HO has tons of accessories but it also takes up a lot of space. Do you make any accessories with 3D software and 3D print it yourself?
THIS IS PERFECT!! You see im building a 1:800 model of Hogwarts castle and I was looking for a dirt cheap way to make scenery, ill just use the paper on the outside instead of the inside!

Well both go hand in hand don't they? I am a model railway maker, but I often find myself checking out terrain from wargame makers.
The crumpled paper for tunnel liner is a super idea. Wonderful series. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Nice reaction. I'm gonna try this. However I don't use plaster but paper to create hills and mountains but mixing paint with the wet paper might work.
I disagree with adding color. Until finished because I have a few. In fact trying to sell my secenry once layout is finished
I just subscribed your channel just after I watched you work so deftly. Jay Shree Ram ❤
Great video. So impressive to see you using free and easily available materials to make a sturdy and realistic model.
Completely amazing way to make a tunnel...
Very inspiring method ! I will try it . Thank you very much ! I will add some real stones

Hey John! I'm so glad to hear that! I'm working hard on making more videos like this... 😉
Also from SA, just want to say you are super underrated. Thanks for this, very helpful, as I'm making my first layout at the moment.

holy golly! Finally a tutorial with stuff I already have.
That's what I want to hear! Glad you liked it.
I would love to see a video on how to create raised tracks, such as going over the mountains.
I love that. Just wonderful
Hello and thank you for the info looks great already...
I really like the process you used with crumpled paper for interior walls of tunnel.
Ye, not many people think about adding details to the inside of the tunnels.

Another reason to detail the inside of a tunnel is that you can put a camera on a flat car and record it traveling through the tunnel.
I just bought a Marklin HO 29185 and are going to make a Norwegian scenery. Good tip mate.
Thanks you it's very amazing
I'm glad you like it🙂
I understand everything you constructed with the exception of the rocks. Where did they come from, how did you make them? Thank you!
Cool video! You glue the cardboard tunnel portals stretched out on the track (1:35) , but later (2:16) you pick up the entire tunnel to edit: how?
I used very little glue, and hot glue isn't super strong...
Very very nice....!!
Hi yes please I would love to see how to create the modelling compound. Would help out heapz. Thankyou. Fantastic learning vids. Cheerz Denise W.A.
