    Thank you for this video! I've been building temporary Christmas villages for many years using this method of building mountains and cliff sides using plaster cloth. I notice that when dried, your plaster cloth still had many little holes which plays havoc when applying paint. The trick is to keep adding moisture to your fingers, and keep spreading the plaster in the cloth until all the holes are gone. Takes more time, but the end result is much smoother. Other than that, great job! I hope to build a corner tunnel like yours this year! 👍

    Very good "how I already did it" video, the mountains and Cabin! That was a nice touch.
    But OMG! You were so savage to that poor dog!! I can still hear him crying. You told him to not come in the Layout Room... HOW could you, you MONSTER!!!! 😱😜😊 LOL
    I'm sure that the little guy was fine, and I just subbed.

      PacbeltRR Thanks for your sub and comment. Looks like you binge watched a bunch of them. I love my dog and kicking him out of the train room is an ongoing gag. Some don't appreciate it and I understand that. He's treated very well once the camera if off. Out of context it looks like I'm a bully for sure. Thanks again for all the comments. -Mark

    I want to add a third semi folding table to my layout with mountains similar to the ones in this video, I just need to create a good enough pitch to convince my parents...

    • @MMRails
      @MMRails  6 років тому +2

      Scrumptious Model Trains Here’s your pitch: Bigger layout will increase subscriptions. More subs mean making money. More money means you can buy your own stuff and better gifts for them. It’s an investment. It also keeps you out of trouble.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline 6 років тому +2

      Fantastic plan, I will just have to be really vague on the channel's monetary capabilities i.e. "It will be able to purchase lots of food" (pop rocks) "and lots of household supplies" (rubber bands)or(paper clips) but those always seem to go missing, no idea who is taking them...

    Hello from Florida
    I still don't understand why more people don't try to use a cheaper Styrofoam. Also, Great stuff in a can is just as fast
    and can be used for filling gaps, cut and shaped with whatever. Also, try using cheese cloth and your own plaster mix.
    Go easy on the great stuff, use it just like glue. It's a better bonding agent. When finished with the main, Paint with
    Flat brush on primer. I just think that most of us feel that scenery is the most time consuming. If there's a short cut,
    that's my ticket. Another point, Try a small air brush for detail color and while the paint is still wet, if you are looking for a stone
    finish, use colored sand at the application point.

    • @MMRails
      @MMRails  6 років тому

      Peter Lass Thanks for the tips Peter! Still not sure when I’ll get to the scenery and how I’ll do it. I’ll take your advice into consideration. -Mark

    Great jog on the tunnel and access hatch but I have a question. How the hell did you get the invisible paint off of the mountain? They don’t make an invisible paint remover and it was obvious that everyone else knew they didn’t make it because everyone I asked made it really CLEAR that they don’t have it and then they wouldn’t help me anymore. Crazy!

    • @MMRails
      @MMRails  Рік тому

      Lol. Clear, funny. Fun fact, my brother and I kept the invisible paint on the mountain. We figured no one would see it. CLEARLY someone did. I hope the new owner added some real paint and scenery.

    while its wet you can run fingers over the cloth to try to fill holes. when you paint the cloth and add scenic grasses it fills over the cloth holes and all. watch model railroad magazines you tube video

    On the risers why not just use masking tape? It’s smoother, cheaper , and you will be covering it anyways? I see everyone doing it the way you did . I am almost at the stage where I will be doing this . I thouht the tape seals it and gluing the track would add the rigidity.

    • @MMRails
      @MMRails  Рік тому

      To be honest, I just followed what the tutorial video said to do. :) Try the tape and let me know how it goes. Might be tricky on the curves. Good luck!

    • @freshpack8928
      @freshpack8928 Рік тому

      @@MMRails will do. The risers are already smooth and true . I don’t think you need the rigidity but I will find out in a couple of weeks. I will probably use the plaster cloth on the sides of the track but def not under it.

    Do not paint over plaster cloth with holes in the plaster. the paint will suck in. Use drywall compound to skim over the surface to remove all holes first.

    • @MMRails
      @MMRails  6 років тому

      Thanks Robert. Someone else gave me that tip as well. One day soon I'll use the compound to not only cover the holes, but too make some rock faces too. If it doesn't turn out, I'll put a stick of dynamite in the mountain and create a volcano.
