I'm here doing exactly that because my son is downstairs discovering this game for the first time and hearing his little shouts of glee are reminding me of my own playthrough, and that brought me back to this review that made me buy the console and the game.
I went out and bought one an hour after this video premiered, without so much as thinking of getting a Switch or caring about the Switch when I first started watching. It's now my favorite device.

This review made me question being a sub to this channel. Such gushing praise for the absolute worst 3D Mario game. It has amazing controls and it never tests you with them. "Some of the moons will floor you" is he serious? Filler and recycled content everywhere. The number of moons isn't impressive when 90% of them are absolutely garbage. Every puzzle room is a pale imitator and the worst case example of something that has been done better and more engagingly in previous titles. You get moons for... Playing a song. You get moons for... Finding toad who isn't hidden. You get moons for... Getting moons... You can spend coins to buy moons. You can find them out in the open. You can find them hidden in boxes or rocks. You can find them in the most mundane places or repeated content again and again and again. My nephew is into Mario games and he found this one "boring" and "too easy". And he's fucking rubbish at games!

Bob Ross won't matter. Nintendo fans won't recognize games flaws . Only 100% absolute praise. If you don't like the game entirely you are either 1) not a Mario/ Nintendo fan with nostalgia 2) game just "isn't for you" 3) a Nintendo hater. I really dislike how they force the flick controls with the game. You can only do those actions with shaking the controller. Really sucky when it's in portable mode. Aiming feels clunky without it but still doable. Unable to rekeybind etc. So you are stuck with multiple buttons doing the same thing. Other issues with the game, somewhat. Still a great game but I don't think it's a 5/5 like people keep saying. "it makes it a classic, a master piece. Doesn't mean it has to be flawless" meanwhile anytime a game has a few flaws "eh, 9. Still great."

Mario and Zelda alone are worth getting the Switch for. They're like 5 games in one. A piece. It's like your getting 10 games out of only 2 games. The amount of content per game, the nostalgia, the music, the personality, the original content that only the Nintendo can deliver. These two games alone crush all other consoles. and to add to that list -not forcing motion controls. It actually bothered me that doing some of the hat tricks and what not actually required you to shake your controller and you have no option to just map it to one of the buttons you have. 3 buttons share an action with another button. Just crazy. no one talks about this though. Not a huge issue but still there. Primarily homing cap throw and using spin throw reliably. I'd at least like to not have to spin in a circle for spin throw. However I get these abilities are "recommended not required." for me, it feels like it takes away from the gameplay elements. Maybe not for the rest of you.

This game review right here made me buy the switch just now, I come from a poor family and I am at a university studying but I still managed to get a bit of money to purchase the console and this game. I don't have a ps4 nor xbox because money reasons and I have an old pc that I play some games on it. I bought it today and once I started to play and watching mario, tears start to run across my face and I felt a huge amount of joy and excitement that I can't describe the feeling, made me remember the good old times of the n64 mario. I wouldn't say Nintendo is pushing their boundaries when the only IPs that are famous of theirs are Mario, LOZ, Mario kart, and smash bros. Sony on the other hand is pushing boundaries with new IPs such as bloodborne or HZD. Returning IPs that are amazing like GT sport, spiderman, or uncharted. And even already existing IPs that completely change their formulas like God of war.
It depends--they've got like two sides of the doggo coin. This game lets you play fetch with the dog. BOTW lets you do tricks with the dog. Neither let you pet the dog :(
I love listening to you compliment things. No idea how you do it, but your energy is so infectious. This sounds disingenuous, but I actually shed a tear while watching this. There's something so special about listening to people talk about something they are unconditionally passionate about. Its like, just for a moment, you get to dip your head into their world, while they show you all the special parts about it that they love. From 3:12 to the end I begin to tear up every time. This is the best videogame review I've ever seen. Dunkey is so original here with his unique style of humor and yet is still able to show his emotional love for Mario which is obviously longstanding. Liam Cad yea very much so. I beat the game but still keep playing (I'm over 600 moons out of 999 technically). Highly recommend playing assisted mode, get through the main story, then later go back and explore because otherwise you'll get bored since you never will get to new places! Also i encourage you not to look up stuff which is super frustrating at times but so much more rewarding! If you are considering it, get it. You won't regret it, and realize it is the greatest game ever made. Dunkey made 3 Odyssey videos, proof he even likes it that much!

man thats how it is with all of dunkeys videos and i even mean the 8-9 year old ones. they are all masterpieces to watch over and over time after time. no other youtuber even comes close to being on the same level as dunkey. honestly id rather watch his videos then some of the best movies ever created. its a shame the algorithm doesnt treat him with the respect he deserves.
Odyssey is the closest any game in the last 10 years has come to capturing the wild eyed optimism of youth that games like Mario 64 and the other greats of its era used to evoke time and time again. And this video is the most uplifting review of a game I think I've ever seen. Thank you, Dunkey, for convincing me to buy a Switch when no other marketing from Nintendo or IGN or anyone else had been able to. Thank you for convincing me this game was worth it.
Videogamedunkey is a return to form for reviews in all honesty. His reviews are always very well informed and sum up the good and the bad without prefacing it with nonsense that doesn't matter. I mean this for reviews in general. His "The Shining" review is proof of this. He dissects and recombines the elements at play in a medium so fluidly that I never even think about his review as an outside opinion. Albeit that's where his comedic timing comes in most times with his silly score system punctuating what comes off as an artful, and well thought out review. I enjoy Dunkey because of his ability to swap between comedy, seriousness, and introspective analysis. He's able to blur the line of comedy and reality so well that I sometimes have a hard time determining whether he's joking, mocking, or seriously pointing something out. If there was ever a guy I enjoyed watching it's him. His videos are always escalating in quality, he always seems to re-watch his own videos and he creates with actual reflective thought that his videos just always get better. His satire is comedic gold, his thoughtful reviews, and analysis vids are on an entirely other level. I for one will always watch Dunkey, and even his opinions aren't mine - he knows that, and he doesn't try to force them upon others. He simply exists, give his thoughts, and moves on. Dunk is what the critic world needs... but not the critic the critic world deserves.

I still remember the first time I stumbled across your channel. It was at the end of november, 2020. I'd just had a really rough year thanks to covid (my grandfather had also passed away recently), and felt really down. Depressed, even. I was scrolling through UA-cam late at night, and saw this video in my recommended. I hadn't owned a Mario game in quite a long time, as I skipped the Wii U/3DS era. But I remembered loving Mario when I was younger, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I clicked on it, and god damn am I glad that I did. I genuinely cried at 3:56 (still gets me every time), because it made me feel some, if not any semblance of emotion. The passion you gave off in this video was incredibly infectious. It showed how much you adored this game, and I just couldn't help but be swept away by it. In the following weeks, I rewatched the video time and time again to the point where I almost got obsessed with it. I just KNEW I had to play this wondrous game, so I saved up enough money to buy myself a Switch and a copy of Super Mario Odyssey which was at a discount thanks to christmas. The day my Switch arrived, I popped in the game and started playing. It was the best experience of my life. Zero exaggeration, Super Mario Odyssey (and by extension, your review) quite literally restored my will to live. The amount of intricate little details, immaculate worldbuilding and charming dialogue made this just such a complete experience. It even helped me cope with the passing of my grandfather, as his funeral was still fresh in my memory. I 100% completed the game in about a month's time, and then did it all over again (online classes were NOT it as many of you may know). Super Mario Odyssey quickly became my favourite game of all time, and still remains there to this day. Thank you, Dunk. Thank you for helping me get through the darkest periods of my life. I can barely describe how much it means to me. -A dedicated fan.

@@barroth3658 it's gusty garden galaxy, it's funny since it's not even from odyssey, it came from Mario galaxy 2007. The theme is pretty beautiful and is regarded as the best theme in the entire game.
I've been losing interest in gaming over the last decade, too much predatory monetization and rise and repeat game design. But Super Mario Odyssey honestly made me feel wonderful, it moved me in a way games haven't done since the early 2000s. It really was a magical feeling and joy beating this game, and just made me returning for more and wanting to explore every corner of each world. This video completely captures that feel. And damn, the orchestral music is just so good.
There are a lot of sick games that have love and passion in it but to find these games, you have to look a the right corner like indie games for example. There's a ton of great indie games that you should check out like : -Hollow knight -A Hat in time -FEZ -Shovel knight -Celeste -Super meat boy -Cuphead -Undertale -Lisa -OFF -The Binding of Issac And the list go on and on ..
@@sylvestrecantu7295 For sure. I'm currently trying to get every shiny gold medal without taking damage(you get a heart on your medal if you do that). I'm not sure how realistic this will be in the later levels, but it worked well enought in the first four. In all of them, I was somewhere between place 500 and 600, which shows how few people actually get shiny golds.

Bob Ross won't matter. Nintendo fans won't recognize games flaws . Only 100% absolute praise. If you don't like the game entirely you are either 1) not a Mario/ Nintendo fan with nostalgia 2) game just "isn't for you" 3) a Nintendo hater. I really dislike how they force the flick controls with the game. You can only do those actions with shaking the controller. Really sucky when it's in portable mode. Aiming feels clunky without it but still doable. Unable to rekeybind etc. So you are stuck with multiple buttons doing the same thing. Other issues with the game, somewhat. Still a great game but I don't think it's a 5/5 like people keep saying. "it makes it a classic, a master piece. Doesn't mean it has to be flawless" meanwhile anytime a game has a few flaws "eh, 9. Still great."

Mario and Zelda alone are worth getting the Switch for. They're like 5 games in one. A piece. It's like your getting 10 games out of only 2 games. It actually bothered me that doing some of the hat tricks and what not actually required you to shake your controller and you have no option to just map it to one of the buttons you have. 3 buttons share an action with another button. Just crazy. no one talks about this though. Not a huge issue but still there. Primarily homing cap throw and using spin throw reliably. I'd at least like to not have to spin in a circle for spin throw. However I get these abilities are "recommended not required." for me, it feels like it takes away from the gameplay elements. Maybe not for the rest of you.

This game review right here made me buy the switch just now, I come from a poor family and I am at a university studying but I still managed to get a bit of money to purchase the console and this game. I don't have a ps4 nor xbox because money reasons and I have an old pc that I play some games on it.
I bought it today and once I started to play and watching mario, tears start to run across my face and I felt a huge amount of joy and excitement that I can't describe the feeling, made me remember the good old times of the n64 mario.

I wouldn't say Nintendo is pushing their boundaries when the only IPs that are famous of theirs are Mario, LOZ, Mario kart, and smash bros.
Sony on the other hand is pushing boundaries with new IPs such as bloodborne or HZD. Returning IPs that are amazing like GT sport, spiderman, or uncharted. And even already existing IPs that completely change their formulas like God of war.

Liam Cad yea very much so. I beat the game but still keep playing (I'm over 600 moons out of 999 technically). Highly recommend playing assisted mode, get through the main story, then later go back and explore because otherwise you'll get bored since you never will get to new places! Also i encourage you not to look up stuff which is super frustrating at times but so much more rewarding! If you are considering it, get it. You won't regret it, and realize it is the greatest game ever made. Dunkey made 3 Odyssey videos, proof he even likes it that much!

Videogamedunkey is a return to form for reviews in all honesty. His reviews are always very well informed and sum up the good and the bad without prefacing it with nonsense that doesn't matter. I mean this for reviews in general. His "The Shining" review is proof of this. He dissects and recombines the elements at play in a medium so fluidly that I never even think about his review as an outside opinion. Albeit that's where his comedic timing comes in most times with his silly score system punctuating what comes off as an artful, and well thought out review. I enjoy Dunkey because of his ability to swap between comedy, seriousness, and introspective analysis. He's able to blur the line of comedy and reality so well that I sometimes have a hard time determining whether he's joking, mocking, or seriously pointing something out. If there was ever a guy I enjoyed watching it's him. His videos are always escalating in quality, he always seems to re-watch his own videos and he creates with actual reflective thought that his videos just always get better. His satire is comedic gold, his thoughtful reviews, and analysis
vids are on an entirely other level.
I for one will always watch Dunkey, and even his opinions aren't mine - he knows that, and he doesn't try to force them upon others. He simply exists, give his thoughts, and moves on. Dunk is what the critic world needs... but not the critic the critic world deserves.

I still remember the first time I stumbled across your channel. It was at the end of november, 2020. I'd just had a really rough year thanks to covid (my grandfather had also passed away recently), and felt really down. Depressed, even. I was scrolling through UA-cam late at night, and saw this video in my recommended. I hadn't owned a Mario game in quite a long time, as I skipped the Wii U/3DS era. But I remembered loving Mario when I was younger, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I clicked on it, and god damn am I glad that I did. I genuinely cried at 3:56 (still gets me every time), because it made me feel some, if not any semblance of emotion. The passion you gave off in this video was incredibly infectious. It showed how much you adored this game, and I just couldn't help but be swept away by it. In the following weeks, I rewatched the video time and time again to the point where I almost got obsessed with it. I just KNEW I had to play this wondrous game, so I saved up enough money to buy myself a Switch and a copy of Super Mario Odyssey which was at a discount thanks to christmas. The day my Switch arrived, I popped in the game and started playing.
It was the best experience of my life.
Zero exaggeration, Super Mario Odyssey (and by extension, your review) quite literally restored my will to live. The amount of intricate little details, immaculate worldbuilding and charming dialogue made this just such a complete experience. It even helped me cope with the passing of my grandfather, as his funeral was still fresh in my memory. I 100% completed the game in about a month's time, and then did it all over again (online classes were NOT it as many of you may know). Super Mario Odyssey quickly became my favourite game of all time, and still remains there to this day.
Thank you, Dunk. Thank you for helping me get through the darkest periods of my life. I can barely describe how much it means to me.

@Twitxh I got BOTW and if I'm being honest I enjoyed it a billion times more than Odyssey, an already fantastic game.
@Twitxh hmm. That is kinda weird. But the game is a wonder. Maybe you had wrong expectations when getting into it for the first time.

That's the thing though, you can restart it alllll over, and enjoy it over, and over, and over again.
Ronum1998 the thing is though I feel like after getting all of the moons replaying just wouldn’t have that same flair, yknow? Because really I’ve replayed every stage how many times trying to get every one, so it’d be stale. But man I loved getting them all 😂
Josiah Thieme I haven't even gotten them all yet, nor have I replayed it. Lately when I play it, it's just moon searching, and balloon world. I'd like to, but idk. Yeah, I understand, after playing through it once was just the greatest thing ever, but now that the story line is finished, Ita just moon searching now, which can get a little boring.

@@barroth3658 it's gusty garden galaxy, it's funny since it's not even from odyssey, it came from Mario galaxy 2007. The theme is pretty beautiful and is regarded as the best theme in the entire game.

I've been losing interest in gaming over the last decade, too much predatory monetization and rise and repeat game design. But Super Mario Odyssey honestly made me feel wonderful, it moved me in a way games haven't done since the early 2000s. It really was a magical feeling and joy beating this game, and just made me returning for more and wanting to explore every corner of each world. This video completely captures that feel. And damn, the orchestral music is just so good.
There are a lot of sick games that have love and passion in it but to find these games, you have to look a the right corner like indie games for example. There's a ton of great indie games that you should check out like :
-Hollow knight
-A Hat in time
-FEZ
-Shovel knight
-Celeste
-Super meat boy
-Cuphead
-Undertale
-Lisa
-OFF
-The Binding of Issac
And the list go on and on ..

@@sylvestrecantu7295 For sure. I'm currently trying to get every shiny gold medal without taking damage(you get a heart on your medal if you do that). I'm not sure how realistic this will be in the later levels, but it worked well enought in the first four. In all of them, I was somewhere between place 500 and 600, which shows how few people actually get shiny golds.
Anything that gets a 5/5 from Dunkey is basically the pinnacle of human achievement

@@spoicydeemer985 Not for people who can´t use motion controls. Nintendo should have put a warning on the box that you are forced to use motion controls.

@@spoicydeemer985 that´s not true at all. Most motion control actions are not bindable to any keys so if you want to use the hat in any meaningfull way you have to be able to use them.

The montage at 3:50 gives me chills every time. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are nostalgic games for me growing up. To hear their music in this context is an emotional experience
