Really interested to hear all of your takes on this one! Especially if you’ve worked in the industry.
EDIT: it has been pointed out to me (correctly so) that Hi-Fi Rush is not an indie game. Whilst this is a common mistake people make when discussing this game, it's also something that I should have picked up on during my research. Apologies for the inaccuracy.
    10:20 yes, I know it’s spelt Siege

Still, Hi-Fi Rush was innovative and superbly polished and was my GOTY. I’m so relieved that the Pub G publisher bought and saved that studio from the grave Microsoft threw them in. I’ll never forgive Xbox for that.

It seems like the entertainment industries have just been condensed to remake and retelling stories like the last of us series. It is a shame that the original ideas don’t see funding because they don’t ’guarantee profit’ 😢

I won't lie, the title scared me a bit cuz I've seen far too many "gaming is dead" videos, but this one was a pleasant surprise!
It's both funny and sad that you brought up Control as a brand new experience, because over the years I've seen people dismiss it entirely over the years because "it looks like just another third person shooter".
It is a bit depressing how the same gamers who demand new experiences and claim to be tired of the same old, are the same ones who will then scoff at the actual new stuff for being "too different" or "not like the usual".
    Pretty great video!

we that make gaming content and consume gaming content have to shoulder a lot of this blame. look at how negative video game analysis/coverage/reviewing is now. negativity fuels more negativity as creators try to get as much money and views as possible, original ideas get buried under knee jerk reactions and prejudice, and the general gaming public tunes it all out. we have to do better.

This is happening in every corner of entertainment. Our culture has grown creatively stagnant. People want to sell things they are confident people will buy. And people want to buy things they are already confident that they like.
Part of it is being risk averse. And part of it is crap economy leading to less disposable income and by extension less willingness to risk that income on something that is not tested and proven.
According to Steam's end of year statistic, only 15 percent of what gamers bought in the past year was spent on stuff that was released in the past 12 months. It's becoming increasingly difficult to compete against the glut of stuff that already exists.

its actually opposite imo. Steam have 50 new games PER DAY.... small, mid creators etc. The effect is that we are drawning in stuff and in the end only a very small minority of everything gets to you. Mostly the titles that are hyped and become viral.
Marvel rivals for example, Path of exile 2, flops like Dragon age failguard etc
The end result is also that incredible amount of crap is also produced. You also have a fomo, limited time and money. but also very creative titles that mostly no one will play :/

I’m gonna list a few recent non- indie games that I feel are great games that have either a new artstyle, new gameplay style or story concept.
    1. Metaphor re fantazio painting like anime style that is fresh and different from persona and fresh story.
    2. Kingdom come deliverance- gameplay mechanics and realism.
    3. Elden ring- new fresh mythos to explore.
4.death stranding- a new strand like genre
    5. Hitman world of assassination trilogy- it’s different and more ambitious than the previous hitman games and evolves that style of gameplay.
    6. And disco Elysium- fresh art style, great game!

To be fair, I like retold stories in the form of remakes, even in the titles I have already completed 🙂 Nothing bad on remaking good games if there are audience for them.
Sometimes the updated graphics and mechanics do miracles for the overall experience the game can deliver.

There’re on SO many things you can do with gravity mechanics, or time mechanics, or portal mechanics.. I mean, most has already been explored..

Another thing I'd like to see more new stuff in is art styles. Or not even new, just more diverse. If its not a horrorgame, a realistic art style is a huge turn of for me to be honest. I grew up with parappa the rapper, skull monkeys (please look it up its so great) and yoshis island. All had diffrent styles. When i looked at my game i immediately knew what i was playing. I want more of that. I think a game doesn't have to be for kids to look interesting. You can make a huge AAA open world game that doesn't look like the others... please I'm begging

Mass market want simple controls, but complain about lack of advanced character controls at the same time...

It’s unfortunate that in movies and gaming, the suits only want to back big bets. This means spend $100 million on a AAA game, and expecting to get hundreds of millions back. To guarantee a return on that investment, they make safe, proven IP that will catch the largest most general audience possible. I’m afraid that as long as entertainment is being created this way, innovation takes a back seat. Hopefully the industry takes note of what Indy games are doing for innovation, and then copy those ideas.

I've found myself going back to the PS3 and prior era of gaming, especially the PS2, Dreamcast and Gamecube games, because back then there was so much genre variety and abundance of nee ideas and mechanics. Not to mention the varying artstyles of the graphics, each game felt truly unique.
Now, pretty much everything plays the same, looks the same, feels the same with very slight differences. I find myself dropping games after 5-6 hours each.

Hyper-realistic graphics are a detriment to gaming as a whole, because as it becomes easier to implement, many devs are beginning to crutch on them, not realizing that it's not a central part of what makes games, well...games. Great graphics can elevate a game like FF7 Rebirth, but that's because gameplay and interactivity of the world came FIRST, graphics are just the really nice icing that makes an already good cake taste even better.

At least Nintendo can be creative, that's because their franchises have either a cartoony art style or an anime art style, so their budgets are almost always super low, if developers make more IPs like that then there is much less risk, it worked with Astro bot so why wouldn't it work a few more times

I'm a novelist, and while I am currently writing my 6th volume in and on-going series, it ain't because a lot of people buy my shit, no, all the books have been personally funded by myself for around $2000 each. And no, I ain't rich. For all of them I had to strike a deal with the publisher to pay in increments. I write because I like doing it, as a past time... sure as hell not because I make any money off of it.

Gaming became monetized and became a "sport". Sobits nothing but really areana shooters and pvp. Then you have just YT reviewers that kill a game before its even released because the gwt some tiny look and it doesnt fot what they wanted to see. Im a huge Assassins Creed fan and for the most part loved them all...with the exception of Odyssey which i still have slagged all the way through with that grind.
I just want a good story single player or MAYBE CO OP. I also miss the 80s and 90s when NO ONE got any info besodes a tv commercial and we all had to just wait for the game. No streamer reviews or early access.

Just commenting now judt as im watching the video, games have gone into a safe base area, a conservative form that is easy to make without the risks. The graphics look amazing and i love the silent hill remake, i love it. But its this resident evil, Tomb rader, crash bandicoot, spyro, Final fantasy 7 ( although that was 2005 tralier in development and amazes me its still talked about getting releases in rebirth since that time.)
But high graphics and remakes are what coperates agree on. But they've all cut back kn themselves. Become the Nintendo of the early 90s, having a platform that always sony will always go too as a AAA game. Forgetting that there are indie games that don't get the credit for their hard work and imagination that keep gaming alive. These AAA games were once indies started from scratch.
Sony forgets what made them in the first place and worked in the 90s, 2000s and early 2010s.
Idk why it was all 2016 dead on where it became to change.
A wave of changes that you started seeing games become agendad base or mainstream media regulating hiw games should be made. Rockstar that pushed the bounderies of innovation and out the social norms started to regulate itself once money become the focus. Steam, as i heard Gabe recently removed gtav from the playform, rockstar because they removed cheats from the game, preventing people to mode however they pleased.
Rockstar reputation going with the coperates agenda and money base slowly forgets where it came from. Business practices start focusing on profit then the game itself.
And the people that work there that replacing the orginal teams who made rockstar wont grasp the creatirs actual intent or progress of where they were going with it. (Or could be wrong....) i mean realism as ive found was kingdom come. Which has potential for gaming and simulating actual life.
But yeah.... gaming has been hyjacked by coperates that stir the agenda.
The playstation 2 era was for gamers and exploration of ideas that the general public thought then as a kids game or violent "video games." Its only until it started making a potental profit out of it to think its cool or oart if it. It was good as it long lasted in the early 2010s until it took advantage and became greedy.
Little like Hollywood and the music industry.
Games were seperate from that, that could focus on ideas and alternatives with the general public or media putting their nose into everything.
Games were like the dungeons and dragons group but in graphic tech wise imagination.
I sometimes watch old demo game releases of the 2000s ps1, ps2, and ps3.... the discs.
And just listening too their thoughts of game topics.
And how everything was set up then.
Different vibe, different way of innovating.
Thinking of it people took it sort for granted then, we actually had it back then.
And it was amazing. Remember the E3?
MGS4 tralier with snake little home movie? Showcasing mgs4 with mgs3 model characters?
    Thats funny.
And the ducks, cant forget the blue sink and ducks, cant get enough if them.... and battle ships, even showing The Getaway 2006 and the potential of what the ps3 was capable of.
It never released but we were seeing really good stuff, psp, peace walker....
I miss that very much. Sorry i was rambling. Just i miss it.
