Being in the army in the early 1990s we had a blast. Best time of my life. We used the S10 because beer ran out on post. The delivery trucks couldn’t make it through the snow. I went to the front Gate. The MPs said we won’t come get you if you get stuck. We said we’re on a beer run. They gave us $150 an a Motorola in case we got stuck coming back. Funny how beer made friends. Lol
The snow was so deep we could on see the top of snow markers. Out there they were doubled up. So the snow was over 5 feet in some spots. The S10 was so light with fat tires it stayed on top. The heater core was broken so we had to scrape the inside windows. Fun times.

I had a 91 Dakota club cab 4x4 for a bit in 1998..also a 318 2bbl in a Plymouth is quicker than a Shelby Dakota...Depends if you have the smog carb on the 318 some had it some didnt thats why some people say 318's move real good and some say it doesnt..Also the Dakota had 3.92's or something like that.
I ran 15.80's in a 1973 Plymouth Satellite stock 318 2bbl,904 auto and 3.21 gearing.100% stock, single exhaust etc....They came with 2 different 2bbl carbs one had 20 hp less than the carb I had(one carb is also similar what they used on lean burn cars later on just robbed power/performance)..torque was also up by as much(I have the factory book dating 1973)..We also had same year Chargers with same everything but the carbs and it was over 2 seconds quicker in the 1/4 mile.We swapped the carbs made back to back run and cars ran identical times better carb was quicker. This was in the 80's and the cars were bone stock never messed with..
I put a strong 340 in the 73 and made a Road Runner clone in 1988,car ran high 12's with no traction for 100 feet! Also ran the 215-70-14 tires so that hampered traction too.Sold it bought 4 cars with the money and kept buying/selling and fixing up.

      Hello andrewdunbar828, You're 100% correct about the headliner-sag issue.
This is thanks to The EPA requiring auto manufacturers to use environmentally
friendly, water-based glue to adhere the cloth material to the cabin roof of cars, trucks & vans. This was an industry-wide issue in high-humidity regions; such as Florida; where this Dodge Shelby Dakota resides.
It took several years until a glue was developed that resolved this issue & met the "ridiculous" EPA requirements.

Break boosting is necessary to break all the tires loose. Stock they can handle a little more boost from stock to get it past 300whp.
The transmission is also what helps get the power down, changing out the stock torque converter for more higher rpm stall speed will help take advantage of the power.
Power to weight is the strong point, next to doing awd donuts in the rain or snow. This vehicle was ahead of its time by mixing forced induction and awd into a pickup.

I like the quote about the Dakota: "it was not atall fast"
However, if i had to choose between the two i would go Dakota simply based on rarest.
Until this video i only knew about the Syclone... my dad had an s10 that was black and that truck is special in my memories but that dodge has got to be one of the rarest trucks ever produced.

haha I doubt that unless you did extensive work to the engine! My Dakota V6 would run 120-125 mph & would smoke a V6 S10 & couldnt touch my V8 Dakota even though the Chevy 4.3 is basically a 350 with 2 less cylinders! Im not taking away from the S10 as I loved them & had an '83, '86 & '88 but they were not as fast as my Dakotas

I have driven both of these trucks many times and done work on them. I can almost guarantee those s10's you raced with your Dakota were 2.8l v6 versions not the 4.3. The 2.8 were absolutely useless. But with just a little bit of work a 4.3 would walk ANY Dakota all day. Again I've been inside those trucks too many times, not taking anything against the Dakota though, they just weren't fast.

I bought one in 90 from a dealer in McKinney TX. They had 12 Syclones that they could not sell because of the price. I got mine for just over $21k. Wish i had it still. The only thing that was bad was the paint job. For some reason, the truck was built without clear coat. Every time i cleaned it, 2 days later the paint was more gray than black. The dealer wouldn't fix it other than wax it once a month for the 1st year. I got tired of dealing with the dealer and sold it to a retired AA pilot who was forced into retirement because he was over 65. I saw the former pilot a couple months after i sold it to him and he informed me that he went to a dealer in Dallas and they told him that GM had an open recall on the truck. They resprayed the clear coat for free. My original dealer was not willing to do the respray because i got it at a discount.

I wish I would've waited one more year, before buying my first new truck. I had a 78 Chevrolet Silverado, 1/2 ton long box 2wd. And sold it for a new 1990 Silverado, top of the line back then. Regular cab, long box 2wd, 350. It was $13,744 out the door with my dad's gm discount. I got 285,000 miles out of it before it was involved in a accident by someone looking at their cellphone, relatively new in those days.! 2001.? Always had a need for a full size truck, but was still living at home, if I would have waited, who knows? I may have bought one.!

The Shelby Dakota doesn't have an electric fan because Shelby decided to give it one for better performance, it has said fan because the original Dakota was never designed to accommodate a V8 and therefore couldn't fit the mechanical fan/fan clutch, and that's why the Shelby Dakota has 5 more horsepower than the same 318 in a contemporary Dodge Ram pickup... it's also why the 91+ Dakota that could be had with a V8 had a nose that was not flat like this first gen Dakota but was instead more convex in order to give the room for the 318 and fan/fan clutch assembly.

What's truly sad is that less than 10 years after these Shelby models were produced Chrysler produced the Dodge Dakota R/T with the 360 Magnum, and I can attest that it was quick...but nothing crazy, it was just fun. I blew one sideways in the rain at 60 MPH with a heavy foot. I also drove one of the original OBS Ford Lightnings in black with red trim and a gray cloth interior with the 351 fuel injected V8 and it was alot of fun too, but still not fast.

It was stated that the size of the engine was increased from 3.8 Litres to 4.3 Litres is not accurate. The 231/3.8 Buick built V6 in the GN/GNX was a totally different engine from the 262/4.3 Chevrolet built V6 in the Syclone/Typhoon but both being GM built Turbocharged V6s, they sound so similar. The 3.8 had a firing order of 165432, I believe that the 4.3 was a different firing order but I could be mistaken.
