The elderly woman must have remembered the Great Depression very well when she chose to buy it. Thanks Tim I’ve been waiting on this video.

Two members of my family were retired, widowed school teachers who both had began their careers in the 1930s in one room schools. Both purchased basic new cars in 1971. One purchased a 1971 Bel Air that she special ordered with 3-on-the-tree with Overdrive, power steering, power brakes, and the big splurge - air conditioning - basic hub caps with black wall tires. The other purchased a leftover 1970 Ford Galaxie 500 Sport Roof Coupe with 302 cubic inch V8, power steering, AM push button radio, body side moldings, white wall tires, full wheel covers, bench seat interior with vinyl upholstery, and automatic transmission. Both cars were very low mileage when sold - the Chevrolet had only 14,000 miles in 1984 when it was sold while the Galaxie had 8,000 miles when it was sold in 1978 - it was a handful for a petite elderly lady with its cumbersome steering and manual brakes - it was replaced by a loaded 1978 Plymouth Horizon that would continue in the family until 2012 when it had 68,000 miles. The Chevrolet and Ford were both garage kept their entire lives up until sale. I saw the Ford around town for at least ten years after the sale. I only recently came to understand how valuable the Sports Roof Galaxie coups have become.

Nothing like a very reliable Turbo Thrift 250 six and a three on the tree. The 1971 Chevrolets were awesome cars.

I believe by 1971 even the Biscayne came standard with the 350 v8 as well as an automatic transmission, power steering & power brakes. The 250 L6 and 3-speed manual were both available for a credit on the sticker price.

Post are the best cars. The best full size GM car is the 1969 Biscayne/Bellaire 2 door post. Last 2 door post. Only full size post without vent windows. Great segment.

The standard transmission would be a pain in the day for a daily driver but for a summer cruiser once and a while, it would not be hard to drive. I love the car! Very nice shape and survivor. I would be proud to own and take care of this Chev. Thanks for posting this.

I live in PA and I daily drive a cranberry red 1970 chevelle 4dr and park it when they start putting salt on the roads. It has 307 sbc and 3 on tree with a r10 overdrive. If you properly dial in column shifters by replacing the bushings and adjusting them it makes them fun to drive.

    • @unclemarksdiyauto

@@johnmaccoy4324 I agree John. They are good if set up and not wore out. Had a few three on the tree 15 year old cars back in the 1980s. Actually had a 3 year old Kcar with the “mystery shift” 4 spd on the floor and the Hemi 2.2 litre. Now a days, the manual transmission is all but gone. There was a time that the manual trans was very common.

Back then many people drove standard transmissions for a variety of reasons. My mom wouldn't drive a automatic transmission car. I sat in traffic many years in company trucks with manual transmissions no a/c.

Learned to drive in a 74 Chevelle with the straight 6 and 3 on the tree, manual steering and brakes. It was a beast to drive in town, no need for a gym. Just drive 1/2 hour around town and your left leg and upper body got a work out. Unfortunately road salt took care of the car by the early 80's.

Those vent slots let rain into the trunk. The only '71 without them was the Vega wagon which had them on the rear fenders just under the window where they looked like rear-engine cooling slots, and the Vega/Monza wagon had those until the end of its' run in 1979.

My Aunt and Uncle had basically the same year and color Chevrolet Impala. Most likely it was a small block with automatic. I was very young then and barely remember it. They did drive it for a long time, I think replacing it with a 78 or later Impala, before turning to a succession of Chrysler minivans
    Thanks for the memories.

Those BIscaynes are really rare, My friends dad had a 69 Biscayne, it was the same color but a 2 door. He bought it from a grandma but that one had a 350 and PS, that were the only options, similar low end interior as this one. We drove that around everywhere in metro detroit in the late 80s, one night we were at a bar in Detroit and someone threw a brick threw the passenger window. Of course no internet back then it took like 2 months to find a replacement passenger glass, as the Biscaye had the frame around the door, all other full size chevrolets didn't, window not the same. HIs did finally found a replacement passenger glass for that car, but it had to come from Minnesota. I imagine it would be even harder now to find a part like that for a biscayne. Those were great cars though, ran fine and reliable.

I'd love to have that. My older brother (1&1/2 years +), learned in a drivers ed. 1969 full size chevy, with the same size 6 & 3 on tree. I doubt that it had power steering & brakes. At least it had front vent windows & floor vents. A real car, to show young kids how one could have a full size with a small motor "tractor engine"and manual transmisson. Simple, yet comfortable, good ride & lot's of space. Miss those days. With the power steering & brakes, it'd be a dream to drive. Cause it's a '71, plenty of "smog control free" power and pep. Add an H.E.I. distributor, lump port the intake and it'd get great mileage and power.

Gone through a lot of those big old cars only because someone else liked it more than i payed for it lol. Reliable old rods. The trunk vents made me think they were in conjunction to rear window defrost blower? Always found that cars with the rear window blower had a solid trunk compared to others from drawing out the moist air, in Canada here at least.

Don't see too many Biscaynes, especially in the later years with this body (71 & 72 only). My grand dad had a 64. Partly because he was cheap but partly because he just never made much and was 100% Depression era trained. Made enough to own a home (bought new I htink in '47) and everyone was always fed and clothed, but there weren't going to be many frills. If could save $160 over an Impala which was about the spread that year, you did it because that was just about enough for the powerglide. (Cranky old man didn't want his wife to drive much but just in case she to)

Biscayne were mostly fleet vehicles. They were not all 6-cylinder cars. Good friend of mine had a 71 Biscayne had a 350 with automatic transmission. My neighbor had one with a 307 3 speed manual transmission. Most of these were good cars that gave many years of trouble-free service. Would love to have one now.

In March of 71. GM I believe made the 3 speed automatic standard on all the full size cars in each division. Power Brakes were made standard on all 71 full size cars. I have the sales brochure on all 69 Chevrolet full size cars. My grandparents bought a new 69 Impala. 350. The engine size was above the front side marker light. 327 V 8. We're in alot of them I believe. Power steering, A/C AM radio. 3 speed automatic. And the radio antenna was on the back right fender. I believe that was an option. I'm not sure. It would move. Turbo- Fire 350. Then, the Turbo Jet 396 was available. It was a trouble-free car. Traded it for a 77 Cutlass S .

I have got 1970 impala ( in Turkey) strait 6 manuel transmission , 155 HP sedan , as classic second car. İt is nice to ride and relatively economic car ( when you compare with 8 cyl's it eats at least % 30 less gasoline) drum brakes , you can stop the engine in slop down traffic to slide down without any change of breaking power.

The 1975 model year marked the last year for the Biscayne on the Canadian market, and I knew someone who owned one. Just have the feeling they might have disappeared from the American market before then as I never saw them advertised. The Belair became the base model and remained in the Canadian market until the early 1980's, though think it was out of the American market before then. It would be interesting to find out what was the last year for both cars in either country.
