    Interactions like that is why the fact that they started saying "base power and toughness" on those cards makes things way more clear. Let's you know instantly that all additive or subtractive effects still apply a lot more obviously than it did before.

    so just to be clear: Australia has a banned list, but it's the vintage banned list; we also have a points list. (The canadian points list was based on ours, originally). We've been playing highlander since the late 90s. We have 60 cards, we have sideboards.

    for your knowledge Alex, the only card to receive an emergency ban was during Urza's Saga block, and that card was Memory Jar. for being busted as all hell, it received and emergency ban 2 weeks after the regular update in Block, Standard, Extended and Legacy.
    Skullclamp is also busted as all hell, and is likewise banned literally everywhere except vintage and commander lol.

    Just checked a few places online, and Australian highlander operates on the vintage ban list as well as a 7 point system.

    Oh god, layers... It's good that they're working on making it less complicated by using phrases like "base power and toughness". We're not there yet, but I have faith that one day it might all be grokable.

    Why is the prowess question that hard? the +1/+1 to target creature (target being self) goes on the stack, then the dance of the skywise goes on. The dance resolves making the creature a 4/4 then the +1/+1 resolves and that creature which is different get +1/+1 until EOT. Am I missing some interaction between base power and toughness? I thought interactions like this are why base power and toughness was changed from simply power and toughness on effects like this.

  • @HeraldBFC
    @HeraldBFC 9 років тому

    Please note: They discuss this in the video, but I feel like writing this out will be nice for reference.
    The point must be made for Prowess + Spells that:
    1) Prowess will trigger before the spell finishes resolving. This is only an issue if you're still in the kitchen table mode of spells finishing resolving in their entirety before triggers or other spells start to matter.
    2) This is half the reason why base power and toughness is now being used by WotC - base power and/or toughness will overwrite the creature's printed values and characteristic setting abilities.
    3) If an ability is lost when the spell FINISHES RESOLVING, you're fine with Prowess, as the trigger will finish resolving first - meaning that the creature will be X+1/Y+1, where X/Y is its original P/T, before becoming 4+1/4+1. This means that you can throw multiple spells on the stack before Dance finishes resolving to have it as, say, 4+6/4+6 if you storm off while its waiting.
    Remember that the majority of standard legal sets will usually spell out when they intend to have an interesting interaction, and that a creature which is being temporarily affected by effects such as these is still the old card - it isn't being, say, Polymorph'd into a new permanent, it is merely being temporarily affected by other abilities.
    See also: Reduce in Stature. If someone somehow resolves this at instant speed against a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it, it will be a 1/3, rather than a 0/2.

    sword of fire and ice, and sword of light and shadow were printed in Dark Steel. Umezawa's Jitte was printed in Betrayer's of Kamigawa.
    Serge was half right though, when Stoneforge Mystic was printed, there wasn't any extremely powerful equipment IN STANDARD. Modern wasn't yet a thing, and Stoneforge wasn't on people's radar for Legacy yet. It wasn't until Scars of Mirrodin, the next block after Zendikar, that Stoneforge went from 0-60 with a quickness (we also lost Jund from the meta at the exact same time)

    The fact that (at least at your local scene) highlander allows the Power 9 in any amount is a bit unsettling. Other than that, I'd be down if it weren't for the fact that Commander wasn't so big in the States. (I do love my Nicole Bolas commander deck tho - Grixis 'Walkers!)

    How do the various regional Highlanders compare to MTGO's 100 Card Singleton format? I don't hear people talk about it much.

    • @CanadianHighlander
      @CanadianHighlander 9 років тому

      Peeja The format is a little different. The biggest difference is in the ban list. Canadian Highlander uses a points list with the vintage ban list where as 100 card singleton on MTGO has a ban list separate from the vintage ban list. German highlander also has a ban list but its list is different from the MTGO version.

    The reasoning behind why the victoria highlander meta being so diverse isn't necessarily sound. They seem to claim that it is a product of the points list when frankly it is more likely the product of the people who chose to play the format in the relatively small and isolated island city.

    Did they say commander doesn't have a sideboard? Official commander rules allow a 10 cards sideboard. due to legal cards "searching outside the game"

    Few points.
    1. I can't really agree with you condoning the bend test. It's an obsolete method.
    2. German HL is definitely not solved. 4C is rampant in German tournaments but there's a lot of successful brewing going on. Bant isn't that popular in GHL anymore. It used to be the go-to archetype in like 2012. You can definitely build and play all of the archetypes Alex listed.

  • @oneinfinity
    @oneinfinity 9 років тому

    I am a German Highlander player and I don't think you give the European Highlander format enough credit. It's way more diverse than you think. Yes, there are a couple of archetypes that are more likely to do well at larger tournaments, like 4cBlood, Jeskai Midrange, RDW... but that doesn't mean that people only play these decks.
    Especially in small scale local events, the meta is usually far more diverse and people are way more willing to play weird homebrew decks. It also depends largely on what city or country you play in. As far as I know, the Mannheim meta is pretty much dominated by 4cBlood, while the Berlin meta is quite diverse with (usually) a relatively equal distribution of aggro, control, combo and midrange, and the Finnish meta is more combo-oriented. There also have been efforts to promote more diversity by banning cards that showed up in nearly every deck of that color (like Stoneforge Mysic and Natural Order) and unban some build-around and combo cards (like Tolarian Academy and, most recently, Fastbond).

    I really wish you would research your history and especially your rules advice better. That Mirrodin Block couldn't have anything to do with Stoneforge's banning in Standard is just obvious, but more importantly: I think inexperienced players will be more confused than educated from your example with Prowess and Dance of the Skywise. You were very underinformed and unclear in what you said. It's actually not that hard: You need to know how triggers and the Stack work. (Must learn for Magic Players) Then there can be no doubt about Prowess triggering and resolving from Dance before Dance even resolves and has any effect. The specific interaction of Power/Toughness SETTING (e.g. "becomes 4/4") effects and and Power/Toughness MODIFYING (e.g. +1/+1) effects is explained in Rules "613.3b Layer 7b" and "613.3c Layer 7c". The "loosing all abilities"-part is obviously (if you understand the stack) irrelevant unless you cast another noncreature spell in that turn and even then everything should be clear for players who know how the stack works.
