Gotta love such a dry humor and of course the technological accomplishments of the international institute for advancement of sourdough science and research of Cleveland, Ohio. Congratulations, keep it going 👌🥳😆🙌🏻
Thank you!
In Canada when you go to the “big orange box store” you can buy each part individually which is cool. Your actual cost will be $5.11 in Canadian dollars. Confusingly you will drive to the store in kilometers per hour but they’ll sell you this stuff in inches. Thanks for the video just made this little gem
Thanks for sharing!
Packed my hubby's lunch and sent him to home depot! Thanks.
Good luck!
I also made one myself using things I already had around the house. Instead of having the handle as a circle, I made it oval so I can expose even more of the lame. I heard people are using one blade for each loaf which looks crazy to me. I do not wash it but after each use, I rub it on a knife sharpening stone. This removes any residue and even sharpen it. Nice and very practical video! I love crafting simple things at home.
Thank you for the feedback. I've also sharpened my razor blades on the bottom of a ceramic cup.
Very clever. Wicked funny. Love your sense of humor.
Thank you. My deadpan game was strong on this one.
I always thought that wiremonkey isn't worth its price. Thank you for this! I will buy these materials in the hardware and do it myself.
Exactly.
Thank you! I made do with plastic spice bottle inserts in place of rubber washers until I get to the store - worked so much better than my purchased stick lame.
That’s awesome. Great idea. Thanks!
I made this last week using the listed parts from Lowes. It was easy and fun to make. I used it for the first time just now and it worked better than either of the two lames I had bought on Amazon. I keep it in a 2.5oz Gerber baby food jar. I love this! Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback! I’m happy it worked for you.
Good idea about baby jar. I have one of those.
Really enjoy that you don't take yourself too seriously. Great idea on the Lame. I've learned a lot from your videos and experiments.
Thank you!
Spot on, great delivery Tom
Thanks.
I use a knife. My father went to Japan some 10 years ago and there he bought me a knife. Now, i am a chef and have used a lot of knives, from cheap ones to proffessional knives. This knife is the sharpest knife i have ever used. It is basicly as sharp as a razor. Infact, i have dedicate it to be my lame! I have other knives i use when cooking. The only drawback is that the knife is not as thin as a razor, but it works as well, and it is sturdier and heavier, so i like this one better than any razorblade i tried
Thanks for the feedback.
Picked up the parts at a local hardware store. Employees tried to find me a blade there, but a rug cutter is appealing due to length but doesn’t have a large hole, as needed.
Love that your videos are fact forward. Thanks.
Thanks. I like Feathers or Astra brand double edge razor blades.
I love this and absolutely LOVE how precise you are. BIG thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you.
Dear scientist, this idea is AMAZING! Lames here in Brazil are amazingly pricey. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Also consider a safe way to store it.
Thank youuu Tom! Will get the items tomorrow. Can’t wait to begin this project. I’m hesitate to buy online because of the shipping fee. 😆😆
Good luck.
A completely different option, especially for guys who know how to use one, is a Straight Razor (and a small Strop) for the kitchen. No more blades to buy and has other uses.
yes, that is a good option. (for guys and gals). :)
Looked up the price of lanes and nothing under£30... Just because sourdough bread is niche doesn't mean we're all loaded... Thankyou so much. Love your clarity, your dry humour and your subject matter. 👊🏻
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. I’m always trying to find ways to simplify things and keep the costs down.
This is the lame I have been looking for! I had so much fun making one that I made two more. I would like to present the other two to local bakers that have helped me in my sourdough journey with Tom's permission. Thank you for sharing this Tom!
Yes, thanks!
My husband is searching his garage for these parts, as we speak! I like that this lame can be safely stored...if anyone is going to cut them self rummaging through the kitchen drawer, it would be me! Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you. Good luck!
I thank the sourdough gods on the regular for The Institute. I made a similar lame from scrap wood around the house, but the blade just spun around when trying to cut, so this is a perfect solution. Going shopping today!
Great. Good luck. The rubber washers really grip the blade. Also think of a storage solution so you don’t have an exposed blade in your kitchen drawer. Something like an Altoids tin would work nicely.
I’ve also put the part numbers in the description.
I absolutely love your videos and your outstanding way of presenting technical issues. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the feedback!
I'm so excited to make one for my cousin who is just entering the world of sourdough. I unfortunately spent like close to $30 for my UFO lame at the height of Covid which I see now are selling for a under &15 on Amazon. But now I am making myself and my cousin one of these skookum ones! ❤
Great. Good luck. You can use different sizes and materials for the washers if you prefer.
For those who are unfamiliar with screws and fasteners , great job Tom. I want one so I shall make one. Thank you. Pack a lunch. lol. I'd say bring a drink. It won't take too long to look through all those drawers for what you need.
Thank you! Those drawers always seem to be mislabeled and the parts are in the wrong place. :)
Can't wait to make one of these!
Thanks. Good luck.
Great idea! I love doing things myself also. Thanks.
Thanks. Good luck!
This is Straightforward and helpful - thanks
Thank you. And it works!
I purchased the commercial version of this lame. It makes my scoring much easier and more precise. I wish I would have seen a video like this before I made my purchase since you came up with something comparable at a very low price.
Thank you. I just came up with this recently.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Great. Also think about a safe storage container so you don’t have an exposed blade in your drawer.
I've been using the same ceramic kitchen knife since March, still working fine for me. But thanks for this tip, if I ever start having problems with what I'm using, this is great info.
I like ceramic knives. Very sharp.
Thank you for sharing! I will be shopping this weekend.
Thanks. Also think about a safe way to store it because I’d the exposed blade.
Thanks for the tip! I was waiting this video for some time now! - you promised us some good weeks ago!
I am using a razor blade for scoring, but I will try to make one like yours.
Good luck!
Thank you. One more video coming out tomorrow.
Thank you, Tom!!!! I use double-edge razor. Contemplated wiremonkey, but no more! Thanks again!
Thanks for the feedback. Also think about a safe storage container for it.
Brilliant!!! Love it!!!
Thanks. I use the 1-1/4” rubber washers here because I like a lot of the blade exposed. Some people have use 1-1/2” or 2” also for more grip and less blade exposure. But I’m still prefer this size.
Thanks for the tip! I made one with whatever I had around the house. I didn’t have rubber so I made a circle with melty plastic and used plastic nails. It feels safer than just the razor blade. Rubber would hold the blade more tightly.
Thanks. Yes, the rubber washers are really important for a firm grip on the blade.
Tom, I made it!!!! Local Ace hardware didn’t have knurled washer, got regular one, and it’s perfect!!!!! I am your fan for life! Somehow my bolt is longer (sticking out), but great nonetheless! Thanks a lot!
I’m happy it worked out for you! Also keep on in a safe storage container because the exposed blade can be dangerous.
Wow so creative!!
Thank you!
Great idea, I think I'll make one of those. Currently I use a carved half of a clothespin and store in small box. But that makes a curved blade. I also noticed you use Feather blades which are the sharpest you can get, I think that matters. Single edge craft blades are too thick and not as sharp as shaving blades.
Thanks 🙏
Thank you so much. Great idea.
Thanks.
Thank you, this lame is beautifull.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for all the info and parts numbers as well. Just ordered everything , and am looking forward to using it.
Great! Let me know how you like it.
@@thesourdoughjourney I sure will. Right now , my real problem is I'm not getting much of a rise or oven spring at all.Watching your vid on stregnthening the starter right now.
@@thesourdoughjourney Scored my first loaf today, and it worked really well !! Thanks again for the post, and your whole channel is super !!
@@lawrencesmeen522 Good to hear. Thanks. I also posted two new videos in the last few days. Check them out.

Thank you! That’s a great name!
Thanks, pretty slick
Thank you.
Great, thanks! I was going through the path of finding a cheap, easy-to-craft lame and this is it.
I used two stainless-steel distance rings, a nut, and a screw (which unfortunately is a bit too long, but it suits for the next weeks much better than everything I had before) to bring everything together.
Looking forward to score my bread later with this new tool.
Lame
Thank you for the feedback.
;-)
Thanks! I gotta make one.
Thanks. It is a winner. I've been using it for about 6 months now.
This is great. 👍
Thanks!
Thank you! I was thinking about purchasing the round one on line, but so expensive! This makes much more sense. Hopefully if I go to the hardware store in the early morning, I can make it home before lunch!! 😆
Good luck!
@@thesourdoughjourney Even better I was able to place the order online and pick it up at our orange big box store. I ordered 4 washers (and used all four to make it a little thicker), 1 brass screw, 1 brass finish washer and 1 brass knurled nut. Total cost Canadian $6.74 including tax. Now resting securely in a small lidded jar. I'm very pleased. THANK YOU once more!!!!!
I like your kitchen worktops :)
Thank you.
Perfect… thx🤜🤛
Thank you.
Wicked nice!
Thanks!

I hope I can find the thumb screws in our Aussie hardware 😬 are you on Instagram as I’ve started a new page I will give you a follow 😃 my page is threebeeskombucha
Thanks. I am not on IG. That part may be called a “knurled nut” or “knurled thumb nut.”

I would have loved to see you use the lame after you made it!
You can see it here starting at 38:30. I use it four times on the four loaves here. ua-cam.com/video/hJrazN-1MeA/v-deo.html
Hi Tom I’ve Probably made 12 of these, I like having more around in case my blade needs to be changed. I give these away also. I bough larger thicker rubber washers this time around. These big thick rubber washers work really well more like my Monkey. The thick middle washer is not as good as the more flexible thinner washer. I also made today the large thinner rubber washer which is flexible bu I think I like the firmer large rubber washer better. There both good.
Thanks. I’ll try a few of these options.
LOVE THE INTRO... Did my Post Doc at the Cleveland Clinic. My son was born in Cleveland... one of my closest friends plays HORN at the Cleveland Orchesta ... thus I LOVE CLEVELAND! Love your videos. Keep up the great work at the “INSTITUTE”

That’s so interesting. We’ve met Hans a few times through another friend, Daniel K., and we’ve seen Hans a few times at some birdwatching hotspots in Ohio. He is also a birder. He probably knows us as the husband and wife couple in the chorus.

Hey Tom, you forgot to tell folks to not take this on your carry on, once the pandemic's is over. Also for that matter, you should have reminded folks to make sure to wear 2 masks when they go to the hardware store. Seriously though, thanks Tom for all of the warnings cause I'm as bad as a baby playing with razor blades once I start handling those darn things. Your deadpanning kills me Tom! Thanks!
Good points. Thank you!
i’m a hairstylist we use feather razors all the time
Thanks!
Hello, I like being enrolled at the IIASSRCO. I tried different ways to score the bread. Usually looked more ripped. I’ll give this a try to also feed you creative spirit. If i’m lucky, some husky handiman will ask what I’m making snd I can tell him a bread knife.
Haha, Good luck!
Feather 100 count now sells for $49.99
Stainless steel prices have doubled in 2 years.
Oh wow. I didn’t realize that.
🎵 Omw to the hardware store 🎶
Good luck. Let me know how it works out.
Nice video. Thank you for sharing. I use a safety razor to shave. So I have a variety of razor blades. I have used the Feather blades and they are pretty good. There is also Shark, Gillette, Derby, Wilkinson and Astra blades. Gillette and Wilkinson are very well known brands but a little pricey. I feel you are probably paying for the name and not the actual product. I know of but have not used Shark or Derby. I found the Astra Platinum blades to be as good if not better than the Feather and they are a lot cheaper if you are buying them in bulk.
Thanks! I have a few Astra blades and they are super sharp.
Tom, should we take it apart to clean it? What would you recommend? This is a great video. Thank you!
I just rinse it under water after use. I only take it apart when I rotate or change the blade.
I would use a plastic bead jar instead of the metal container.
A good recommendation.
What keeps the blade from moving unpredictably if the screw loosens a bit and/or the bread dough is dense? Dangerous? Might benefit from a 3rd (thin ) washer with glued on blade-edge side rails.
Good question. You could tighten the screw with a screwdriver. I just hand-tighten mine and the blade has never moved. The rubber really grips the blade.
Based on your great question, I did some testing. Even just hand-tightening the nut, I could not get the blade to move at all when pressing the edge of the blade as hard as possible on the edge of my countertop. It just doesn't move. I even unscrewed the nut until it was loose and the blade still does not move. The blade really sticks to the rubber washers. Thanks for the question. This was a good test to perform.
PS the large rubber washer is 2 oD 1/8 inch
When I made the bigger thicker washer I cut about 1/4 off so it would expose more blade. I just used it it worked well.
Good idea.
Thanks!
Looks practical, but just to be specific are all these Hillman parts available at a Chain Store, such as ACE or True Value...?
Yes, I purchased all of these parts at Lowe's and I've seen the same or similar parts at Ace Hardware stores.
@@thesourdoughjourney Great news, thanks! And your source for the Japanese blades...?
I got those on Amazon. They were $26 for 100 a few months ago but appear to be $36 now.
Yeah, free- handing a double edged razor blade; it's a great way to leave your signature DNA on every loaf.
Exactly. I cringe every time I see people do that.
