  • How can I make my own inexpensive lame? This video demonstrates how to make a sourdough scoring lame for less than $3.00. Using commonly available parts, Tom demonstrates how to procure and assemble all of the parts required to make a scoring lame.
    Parts - Blade
    (1) Feather Double Edge Stainless Razor Blade
    Parts Hardware - these parts are typically found at Lowe's
    (2) 1-1/4” Rubber Washer 3/16” hole and 1/16 thickness, Hillman Part #880373
    (1) #8-32 Brass ½” Screw, Hillman Part #490514
    (1) #8 Brass Knurled Nut, Hillman Part #880460
    (1) #8 Brass Finish Washer, Hillman Part #490715
    These parts are typically found at Home Depot
    (2) 1-1/4" Neoprene Washer 3/16" hole and 1/16" thickness, Everbilt Part #597828
    (1) 8-32 Brass 1/2" Screw, Everbilt Part #813591
    (1) #8 Brass Knurled Nut, Everbilt Part #831128
    (1) #8 Brass Finish Washer, Everbilt Part # 802861
    Ace Hardware also carries many of these parts and they can be purchased individually (not in multi-packs)

    In Canada when you go to the “big orange box store” you can buy each part individually which is cool. Your actual cost will be $5.11 in Canadian dollars. Confusingly you will drive to the store in kilometers per hour but they’ll sell you this stuff in inches. Thanks for the video just made this little gem

    I also made one myself using things I already had around the house. Instead of having the handle as a circle, I made it oval so I can expose even more of the lame. I heard people are using one blade for each loaf which looks crazy to me. I do not wash it but after each use, I rub it on a knife sharpening stone. This removes any residue and even sharpen it. Nice and very practical video! I love crafting simple things at home.

    I made this last week using the listed parts from Lowes. It was easy and fun to make. I used it for the first time just now and it worked better than either of the two lames I had bought on Amazon. I keep it in a 2.5oz Gerber baby food jar. I love this! Thank you!

    I use a knife. My father went to Japan some 10 years ago and there he bought me a knife. Now, i am a chef and have used a lot of knives, from cheap ones to proffessional knives. This knife is the sharpest knife i have ever used. It is basicly as sharp as a razor. Infact, i have dedicate it to be my lame! I have other knives i use when cooking. The only drawback is that the knife is not as thin as a razor, but it works as well, and it is sturdier and heavier, so i like this one better than any razorblade i tried

    Picked up the parts at a local hardware store. Employees tried to find me a blade there, but a rug cutter is appealing due to length but doesn’t have a large hole, as needed.

    Thanks for the tip! I made one with whatever I had around the house. I didn’t have rubber so I made a circle with melty plastic and used plastic nails. It feels safer than just the razor blade. Rubber would hold the blade more tightly.

    Great idea, I think I'll make one of those. Currently I use a carved half of a clothespin and store in small box. But that makes a curved blade. I also noticed you use Feather blades which are the sharpest you can get, I think that matters. Single edge craft blades are too thick and not as sharp as shaving blades.

These big thick rubber washers work really well more like my Monkey. The thick middle washer is not as good as the more flexible thinner washer. I also made today the large thinner rubber washer which is flexible bu I think I like the firmer large rubber washer better. There both good.

I feel you are probably paying for the name and not the actual product. I know of but have not used Shark or Derby. What keeps the blade from moving unpredictably if the screw loosens a bit and/or the bread dough is dense? Dangerous? Might benefit from a 3rd (thin ) washer with glued on blade-edge side rails.

    • @thesourdoughjourney
      @thesourdoughjourney  3 роки тому

      Good question. You could tighten the screw with a screwdriver. I just hand-tighten mine and the blade has never moved. The rubber really grips the blade.

    • @thesourdoughjourney
      @thesourdoughjourney  3 роки тому +5

      Based on your great question, I did some testing. Even just hand-tightening the nut, I could not get the blade to move at all when pressing the edge of the blade as hard as possible on the edge of my countertop. It just doesn't move. I even unscrewed the nut until it was loose and the blade still does not move. The blade really sticks to the rubber washers. Thanks for the question. This was a good test to perform.
