Thanks for uploading all the Casella symphonies. This one is much more Neo-Classical than the earlier ones and reflective of the time it was written, 1939-1940. I also hear a subtle influence of Mahler in the use of trills and percussion. The end reminded me of the end of Mahler's Seventh Symphony and the brash use of trills in the woodwinds is a Mahler trademark. This is not said in criticism, just an observation. Frankly, I love all three of the Casella symphonies and thank you, KuhlauDilfeng, for including them.

On second hearing I find the Mahler influence very slight, this is the mature work of a unique and important composer. I love his stuff!

A quite energetic music, very well written and balanced. The influence of Mahler is both obvios nd very filtrated.

It seems to me that Casella's Third Symphony is a more impersonal, less emotional work than his first two symphonies, and that their Mahlerian influence has been subdued (though still present) and supplanted with Casella's own distinctive harmonic and melodic content, and somewhat harder-edged orchestration. His mature, fully-developed style is evidenced in this impressive opus.

+ronald b woodall I much prefer this to the more late romantic tinged earlier ones, they're imo 'mushy' and this is clear, incisive, pithy -- and still highly lyric.

That's because here Casella is Casella, not Mahler.
He finally found the courage to express himself as he is.
He is a superb original composer of the 20th century.

What a great piece! Colourful and propulsive. The symphony reminds me a lot of Berthold Goldschmidt, especially of Der gewaltige Hahnrei.

The only piece I know by this composer is Pupazzetti, which appeared on a CD with Italian Futurist piano music.

At first I thought 'neo classical', but that thought went to the back of my mind after a while. 70s film music a little (Lee Holderidge). But there's so much origanality here. I love Casella's symphonys (especially the stunning 2nd), even the 1st which he dismissed.

The Casella's #2 has become my favorite Italian symphony. I too am getting to appreciate all of them as I never heard of this composer for decades.

I'm not so familiar with Mahler. That's why I will not mention him here. Neither that I hear Mahler nor that I don't hear him. I only know the 10th symphony - the unfinished. I like some parts of it but I don't know if they are the ones which were composed by Mahler or by the guy who finished the symphony.

Casella was a cultural nationalist who sought cultural means to make fascist Italy strong. I do not hear much Mahler influence in this work, and that is consistent with Casella's cultural agenda in 1940: a strong, nationalist (and fascist) Italy. He certainly did not intend to represent Italian music as a variation of German music.

I think this is music and it has nothing to do with politic ... it's just a beautiful symphony of a great composer.

Great music is great music. Can be written by a fascist, a communist, a muslim, a christian, a gay or a straight... Who cares? Casella was a great composer, and beside that from where did you get that he compromised himself with fascism?
