  • What's it like wild camping for 3 nights in sub-zero weather in the Brecon Beacons? Join me to find out, on one of my most memorable wild camping trips; brilliant scenery, amazing weather, and snow & ice. Using the Lanshan 2 backpacking tent in winter conditions, and wearing trail runners. My route took me over 30 miles, with 7400 feet of ascent.
The 'dry' weight of my pack (excluding food & water) was around 9kg. My full gear list is here:

Cold videos without snow never sell it to the watcher. Great vid. 🇨🇦

I'm genuinely amazed the Lanshan was enough. Admittedly you're sensible enough to wear the appropriate gear. Much kudos. Great video as ever. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Yes, it is a surprisingly capable tent if you get it pitched well in a good location - but I haven't tested its limits in high winds ;-)

Watching this on a warm August evening, makes it hard to envisage just how cold it was back then.
However, the stunning views and peaceful surroundings made this another enjoyable watch Charles, thanks again.

      Thanks!
Yes, it was one of the coldest trips but actually, with the right gear and a bit of experience, it wasn’t miserable. In fact, I found that the cold was quite exhilarating.
Plenty of lessons learned for next time, though!

Wow, that was stunning. How you can say you're a softy when to me that trip was pure mountaineer!
I just started winter camping this year and as a genuine softy I put 4 tealights in a small metal box with a close fitting lid....yes i know, maybe not safe, but lit for just afew mins, takes the edge off the cold in the tent by afew degrees, to help relax before settling to sleep!

Thanks; you've made me feel much more proud :-)
Just be very careful with naked flames in the tent. And any improvement in the tent warmth is soon lost. That's why I use use a 'hot water bottle' in my sleeping bag. Perhaps hand warmers would be worth checking out?

Great video Charles, looks like a proper winter adventure with some fantastic views. Thanks for talking us through your gear choices.
Think you've really shown the capabilities of a well optimised Lanshan once again.

Well done Charles, 3 nights in those temps is certainly a trip to be proud of. I think my feet would have dropped off in trail shoes. I have been that way once on the CW so nice to see it again and I also did a 3 nighter in the Peak District but included a pub cafes and a shelter on my route to make it more comfortable.
Anyway a top adventure and well done

Thanks Dave; nice to hear from you again. Yes, in that weather it was important to wear the right socks with the Trail Runners in order top keep the feet warm enough, but I didn't have any problems. Enjoyed your Peak District video! Charles

In late August 2021 a group of Irishmen had to be rescued off Kebnekaise after getting lost on their way up to the summit, being forced to spend the night on the mountain in below-zero temperatures. One of them had only a t-shirt and shorts on. Kebnekaise is never a balmy place and in late August winter is nearly upon the mountain. I don't know what he was thinking.

Wonderful video Charles. Interesting to see how the lanshan 2 performed. Might have to upgrade to a 4 season inner myself (and finish of all my mods - or should say i say your mods). I was there a few days earlier but far busier (and cloudier) at the weekend and only camped for the one night (not in lanshan). Would love to know the full route details you did.

    • @longsufferinghiker
      @longsufferinghiker  7 місяців тому

Thanks mate. The 4 season inner makes a huge difference, and in fact I use mine all year round.
I started at the Blaen-y-glyn car park, camped at Gwaun Cerrig Llwydion, in the valley west of Fan Nedd, and at Llyn Cwm Llwch.

This was absolutely brilliant. Love your delivery style and filming. Also thanks for the great gear list. I’ve just ordered some rubble sacks! 😊 But those OMM chest pods are nowhere to be found, I’ve been searching for weeks. 😮

Aw, thanks! You've certainly cheered me up on a wet cold Thursday :-)
The chest pods are incredibly useful, so I hope you find one soon. TBH the OMM ones aren't perfect; it would be much better if they were waterproof, and the OS maps don't fit inside. It has crossed my mind to get some made bespoke by someone like Treadlite Gear.

Dartmoor is a fantastic place, and great for wild camping. It’s going to be a bit soggy after all the recent rains, but beautiful always.
