- Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the most talented military leaders in the history, so every battle he fought is fascinating, as well as his complete knowledge of tactical and strategic aspects of the war. He was part of the French Revolution and ended it, he was the biggest conqueror of Europe, but also brought its unity closer. The battle of Marengo of 1800, which took place during the War of the Second Coalition between Napoleon and Austrian troops under Baron Michael von Melas is interesting, as French leader committed a big mistake, but was able to score a big victory through sheer will and tactical acumen. We are planning a series of videos on Napoleon if this video gets enough attention. :-)

It became so overpopulated that it erupted in revolt that swept the old establishment, heavily militarized the country and opened an opportunity for upstarts like Napoleon to claw their way to the very top. When Napoleon was done with France she was no longer the most populous and was also smaller than when he took over.

The death of Dessaix utterly devastated Napoléon - he had a lot of extremely sad moments throughout his life, very many of his friends were killed during battles.

True, but the problem with Napoleon is he overreached, he was the greatest military mind of the age at the head of Europe's strongest power but he overextended and lost, leaving France weaker than before. Ultimately calling him 'the Great' misses the fact that he lost and ultimately left France in a worse position than it began at. Had he managed to arrange peace before invading Russia then yes, he would definitely be called the great.
Napoleon is enough. He doesn't need the title Great.
Next time you make a French surrender meme, remember.

Naopoleonic Wars! Superb! Have always loved the battle of Marengo, really showed how much of Napoleon's genius depended upon the competency of his subordinates. Napoleon relied upon Massena (Brilliant commander, though later humbled by Wellington in the Peninsular war) to hold the enemy while he manoeuvred his forces to gain the strategic initiative. The battle itself is a testament to the French officer corp's hold over their men and their tactical flexibility on the ground, right from the rank captains up to the corp commanders, being able to organise an orderly retreat with timely reinforcements to maintain the line in the face of withering enemy fire, and then to rally in time for a swift counterattack, all with such precision and impeccable timing, these elements would be missed by Napoleon in the campaign of Waterloo. True, it was all Napoleon's plan and improvisation that instigated these events and troop movements, but the credit for the execution must go to his subordinates. The field officers were the heroes of this victory. One can only make conjectures if such excellent discretion and tactical awareness was shown by his subordinates in the Waterloo campaign; thinking of Grouchey's refusal to 'follow the sound of the guns' even in the face obvious disaster, over-committing the troops to Hougoumont, which was supposed to be a feint as per Napoleon's instructions, and finally Ney's all out cavalry charge. You can definitely observe here that similar sort of obtuse rigidity and reckless impetuosity would have unravelled Napoleon's schemes here as it did later at Waterloo.

A nice little fact from Napoleon's days in Italy. Once he was crowned emperor of France he wanted to be crowned king of Italy in the Duomo of Milan but the facade wasn't finished yet, because of financial issues. So he told the architect to finish the project and said when he is crowned he'll pay for everything. So the architect had the labourers finish the facade and the architect added a little statue of Napoleon to say thank you for financing the project. He was eventually crown king of Italy with the crown of Lombardi but never paid a single cent that he had promised.

Napoleon was a very calm man. You can see the difference in their tactics, Napoleon saw the picture outside of the battle, while the enemies see openings.

Two greatest generals of their generations.
The best part is Suvorov wrote about the young general in a letter "Oh, how this young Bonaparte walks! He is a hero, he is a miracle hero, he is a sorcerer! He conquers both nature and people.... As soon as he embarked on the path of military leadership, he cut the Gordian knot of tactics. Not caring about the number, he attacks the enemy everywhere and smashes him completely. He knows the irresistible force of the onslaught..."
This battle chills me everytime cause it teaches me even great generals like Napoleon can do mistakes and luck has a great potenct on grasping the victory on battlefield.
They were not "pretending", Napoleones army back there devastately immoralized and lost the field. The 2 things save the day was Kellermans chavalry charge which compliments on Kellerman himself not Napoleon and Desaix himself. Napoleon is a great commander, one of the best who ever lived tbh but he made 3 crucial mistakes in this battle. He get his army on flat area so early, wasnt able to realize Melas' dawn raid, sent Desaix so far which one of his generals confess later that:
"If Desaix's army had arrived 1 hour later, we would all be sleeping with the fishes at the bottom of the Po River."
"I LOST THE BATTLE OF MARENGO AT FIVE O CLOCK BUT WON IT BACK AT SEVEN"

It's only alluded in the video, but Marengo was really Desaix's victory.
He was the one who decided to turn back his army towards the battle "to the sound of the gun". Talking about the situation in the afternoon, he famously told Bonaparte " This battle is lost, but there's time to win another one". It's only because he died during the charge that Napoleon was able to hog all the glory, in a battle that was heavily used by his propaganda machine.
Also, for what it's worth, the early departure of Melas, sending news that the battle is won and the French defeated, is a big plot twist in the Opera Tosca. :)

It for was this victory that Napoleon named the horse that he rode over the Alps and until his defeat at Waterloo. The Duke of Wellington then took possession of Marengo and kept him until the horse passed away.

I really love your videos. The writing, editing and historical research are great. However, there are two things that bug me.
Firstly, the world map is a little bit to inaccurate. I know it's hard to draw perfect borders, somone will always be unhappy but a lot of times they are really inaccurate. In this video Prussian and HRE borders really disturbed me. Second thing is the movement of divisions on the battlefiled during the battle sequences. If it could be a little bit more fluent when the blocks are turning it would really enhance the experiance.
I hope you treat this as a piece of constructive advice not harsh criticism. I already recomended this channel to my friends and they subscribed. Keep up the good work!

The first is more problematic. Not only because drawing them is an absolute hell, but also because the info varies. We are using many sources and some of them have different maps, which only adds to the difficulty. Research time is also a problem, as tracking the vast map across 10 years can be very time-consuming. We need to improve, though, no argument here.

Marengo County, Alabama was named in honor of the battle by French settlers when they established the towns of Arcola, and Demopolis along the Tombigbee river. The County is actually older than the State.

I've always been interested in the Napoleonic Wars, so it comes to no surprise when I've found my interest peaked here. I also love seeing the battles broken down such as here and on another channel, so I can say for sure that I will be watching for those other Napoleonic Wars videos!

Because he used * Cavalry Flank Attack*
Timing is key, hiding is key. Making sure your cav is there, and the enemy doesn't know it isn't that easy. Many things regarding communication and organization had to be figured out before the battle. Genius usually looks really simple too.
There should be a History Channel docuseries like Vikings on Bonaparte, we have too many medieval-era tv series and not many of those that are pre-WW1 or Victorian

yeah well, I got that, I see it more as creative licence as they're depicting more a legendary figure based on Norse legends instead of history. History Channel has definitely moved towards views instead of facts, mainly because historians dont bring views haha

I think there is a certain bias in favor of Napoleon, as you didn't mention that it was a succesful plan of Melas (using a double-agent) in fooling Napoleon that he wouldn't attack at Marengo and so Napoleon scattered his forces. On the contrary you seem more than eager to point out how ingenious Napoleons prebattle maneuvering was. The battle itself was mostly won because of Desaix's iniciatives rather than anything Napoleon himself ordered. It is safe to say that he had a day off at Marengo and certainly didn't prove anything like the praising you give him at the end by saying "he proved his genious" when he actually did the obvious thing by ordering a cavalry charge against the disorganised and unsupported Austrian right flank. Yes, Napoleon was by all means a military genious but at Marengo he showed almost none of his capabilities and doesn't deserve much praise for the battle itself.

It is amusing that all Napoleon would say to Kellermann after leading the charge was "You had a good charge." It was a decisive moment, but Napoleon refused to praise Kellermann which is interesting as Napoleon was known for complimenting his men.

In the battle of the Nile Ottoman together with British forces defeated Napoleon and in addition to that, Ottomans alone has won against Napoleon at the siege of Acre. These are one of the few wars Napoleon has lost.

The battle of Marengo plays a part in the plot of the opera TOSCA by Puccini -the setting is papal Rome just before the battle and news of French victory plays part in determining whether reactionaries(papal government) or progressives are in power.
Great tidbit. Seems that Napoleon influenced great development in all forms of art.

Please do napoleons battles, There are very few high quality documentaries about him. You have to do napoleon and his battles... he fought huge 60 battles and lose only 3 of them or its something like that, do austerlitz, lepzig, minsk, eyalu, borodino invasion of russia and many more. The most colorful fugure in the history: Napoleon bonaparte, you have to make documentaries about napoleon and his battles. !!!
