    I did 10 years AF, just got out. Did 5 deployments, only 1 was accommodating as this as far as amenities, but the ops were insane, almost brutal 16 hour days during the Iraq drawdown in Iraq through Camp Arifjan and Ali Al Salem. Joint SOF units aren’t always as fancy, but we did do more interesting stuff and had better toys for sure even though the combat ops were always pretty tough.

      @@Bruce.lee94 Yeah I was AFGSC for my first 4 years then got an AFSOC assignment for the remainder of my career coded as an enabler, where AFSOC was waiving our IDT and pushing us right back out the door for another 6-7 months, after only a few months home. 4 out of 5 deployments plus numerous TDYs were my last 6 years, and no, they weren’t voluntarily. But Everyone knew I wasn’t the kind of NCO to swindle my way out, so hell yeah I went. Some damn good and horrific times I’ll never forget. We made some…. Stuff…happen, so I made rank quickly and got thrown on every tasking by request from the “agencies” we were supporting. A very eventful and exhausting 10 years went by and had to call it due to mental health and extreme toxic leadership. Hope all is well with you, keep it slow, keep on keepin on as Joe Dirt would say.

    • @Bruce.lee94
      @Bruce.lee94  2 роки тому +1

      Ah man sorry to hear about the leadership and the mental health. Im sure that all took a toll. Hope your doing better. You definitely put the work in and hopefully they gave you the proper disability rating. Hate when good people get put through the ringer the military would be a better place if they learned to keep and treat people like you better.

    I went TDY to Honduras twice, in ‘87 and ‘89. We lived in VN-era hootches. While everyone else kept the hootches open bay, we, the base fire dept., sectioned off our hootches into 8 individual rooms. As an SSgt, I got a corner room with two windows. Our beds were bolted to the wall which allowed for extra storage underneath. We also had individual lockers and at least two electrical outlets. We also built a deck at door level that connected all of the hootches, plus our kitchen and shower.
    In Saudi Arabia, we lived in Eskan Village in 4 bedroom houses. A couple of my guys decided to make ‘party central’ with the centerpiece being a jacuzzi tub. They took an unused fuel bladder, ordered some diy bathtub jacuzzi jets, and viola!…the fire station jacuzzi. Just like home.

    • @Bruce.lee94
      @Bruce.lee94  2 роки тому

      My last deployment we hung out with the fire dept and honestly they made the deployment so much better. Constant bonfires, had their own volleyball court, and just good people overall. Always enjoyed hanging out with FD personnel!

      @@Bruce.lee94 One thing about firefighters is we do have a lot of skills outside of our AFSC. Whenever I deployed, I always asked about what guys did as hobbies or off duty employment. There would be a couple I could count on to be the station scroungers. Those guys always found things lying around the base that could be repurposed for either the fire station or our area of the compound.

    Spent the Summer in Bahrain in 2002. We lived in a tent city, but had temp buildings for units and chow hall, and had a gym and beer hall in a K span. Most importantly we had A/C. Though the host unit was an Air Force wing, we had Marines, Army, and Navy, all of whom appreciated the amenities we enjoyed and provided to everyone irrespective of branch.

      I know, you’d think we were unionized or something…
      When I was in Honduras, we would take ‘work breaks.’ Depending on temp and humidity, we could be reduced to 15/45 minute work to break ratio. On duty, at the fire station, we rarely had to worry about being interrupted while playing Hearts or watching a movie….or sleeping, er, meditating.

I was in CSAR and even though we didn't have jack in afghanistan we would fly to Uzbekistan about once a month for a week and it was a lot better but nothing like you have it at that location and I got to afghanistan in 2002 so the war was still new, crazy that was 20 years ago.

      Kinda just depends what base they get deployed to. Typically other branches living conditions arent as good 😅

      I am retired AF and deployed with Army a lot, everyone has something different that's good and bad. We fob hopped all around Iraq, the Army was allowed to have females in their rooms. The first time a female walked into my friends room I straight left, lol each branch did it differently.

    I have a question. Are the guys in Al udeid dating girls in Qatar? I am worried because my bf is based out there for 6 months and I've heard they have tinder there..... 😔

    • @Bruce.lee94
      @Bruce.lee94  2 роки тому

      I never seen anyone date one of the locals but remember deployments amplify emotions. Your mind will start thinking the worst and that can take a toll on your relationship. Have trust, communicate, and just be patient with one another. Its gonna be difficult being apart especially if this is the first time yall are going through this but its been done before. So many couples have made it through deployments and its not impossible. If you love him and he loves you this will make yall stronger in the end. Hopefully it goes by quick but dont let those thoughts infect your mind.

      @@Bruce.lee94 hi Bruce. Thanks for your reply I don't mean date one of the locals as in the Muslim girls. But I used to live in Qatar myself once and there is also a large expat population. My friend who still lives there tells me there is also tinder. So me and the bf have been on and off for a year and 4 months.. At the moment it's "off" again so I'm on pins that he will do something with someone. He dosent seem to go for the military girls (he prefers very feminine) but I am worried about the tinder situation. Do you get much downtime there? And is it easy to go on dates there etc? I know it's supposed to be in the middle of nowhere but Doha is only 30 mins by taxi right?? Are they allowed visitors back to the base etc? X

    • @Bruce.lee94
      @Bruce.lee94  2 роки тому +1

      The downtime really depends on your job but most people will be working 12 hour shifts. But no we cant bring people back on base and its more than likely he will have a roomate. Tinder is there but you have to submit a form that tells you where off base you are going and you also have to be accompanied by usually a sergeant. So getting “alone” time isnt very easy, it always felt like i never had privacy when i would facetime with my wife someone was ALWAYS near 🙄. Also they will have a curfew they need to be back on base by a certain time.

      @@Bruce.lee94 ok thanks that makes me feel a little better. He is an officer. Would that make any difference? I am aware he could try and get a hotel or something but not sure if it's allowed? He did mention something about 12 hour shifts. I can't imagine he will enjoy having a roommate he's very autistic and needs lots of space. But he's done deployments before. This however is my first experience of it and it's killing me. Particularly as we are not "on" at the moment so I can't check in and boss him like I usually would. Hes in the British air force by the way not the American one. Not sure if that makes any difference? 😔

    Wait, you’re able to rock a clean shaven beard in the Air Force?

    • @Bruce.lee94
      @Bruce.lee94  2 роки тому

      Only if you get a shaving waiver, but it cant exceed 1/4” and your doctor would have to be the one to give you the waiver if you are showing signs of razor bumps.

    • @Bruce.lee94
      @Bruce.lee94  2 роки тому +1

      You just have to look like your breaking out so if your allergic to anything or if you just started getting pimples around where you shave that might work i heard rubbing dryer sheets will make you break out but just depends on your skin lol
      Also you can get a religious shaving waiver if you’re norse paganism but you will have to talk to a chaplain and your commander so they can sign you off but seen a few people and they can grow their beards out to i think 2 inches

      Training is pretty quick i believe our tech school training is only 30 days and then you learn more when you get to your first base. As far as traveling the opportunity is definitely there. Ive been able to travel a lot, we can get stationed at pretty much any air force base as long as it has an airfield. If you are looking to travel more we have a CRG (Contingency response group) position that you can apply for and they travel wayyy more also they get certified in sky diving
