Yeah he was the best! I loved his narrations in the educational documentary series, "Now, Let's Take A Look At..." My favorite episodes were probably "Now, Let's Take A Look At Thames" and "Now, Let's Take A Look At England's Exports."
He's a living legend and I'm glad Americans are finally getting a chance to see him, long overdue. I still have the cassette tapes of his shows I picked while traveling across the pond.
I remember him and Bruce Forsyth used to be prime time tele back in the day. The golden age of tele, has to be. Last time I saw Tommy he was on the hovis adverts, remember those? So glad he’s back

I didn't see this appearance until now, but when I watched the first episode of the new "Gong Show", I did figure it out a few minutes in. First I knew he was reminding me of someone, then I went "Man, this guy's like a Mike Myers character", and then at one point he showed a distinctive expression on his face that made me realize it was indeed Mike Myers.
I was watching the show with my parents, and they wouldn't believe me, until I looked it up and found much online speculation near-confirming it. But yeah, awesome work becoming this character; I'm sure it was mostly just the big Mike Myers fans that were able to detect him underneath the makeup.

+daves: I've never been to a taping of a talk show, but I presume they have screens that allow the audience to see camera close-ups of the interviewees' faces (as well as to be able to see pre-shot bits). If that's the case, there's no way that zero people in a large audience figured it out, given that I did almost right away when I watched the first 2017 "Gong Show" episode. BTW, just read that the show's been renewed for a second season, and that in the announcement, ABC finally officially acknowledged that it's Mike.
P.S. I had no idea there were two other U.S. revivals of the show before this, 1998-1999's "Extreme Gong" with George Gray (who some may remember as the lame host of the U.S. version of "Junkyard Wars" / "Scrapheap Challenge") on the Game Show Network, and then 2008's "The Gong Show with Dave Attell" on Comedy Central.
The last of the great's... Along with Ken Dodd and Cilla Black amonst others, Mr. Maitland played a huge role on british comedy and variety alike over the years. Im just delighted to see him finally get the recognition he deserves. He is my granny's favourite!

That is some of the best prosthetics I've ever seen. If you didn't know he was Mike Myers beforehand you would have a hard time trying to guess who was underneath. Bravo to the incredibly talented make up artists!

Hey guess what, I think I'm into Mike Myers again after this. If he had different, more realistic contacts and I didn't know already, I never would have known it was him.
Yeah, the contacts were definitely a weak point, but it was possible to just assume they were an affectation of Maitland's. I did think it was a genius move to come back into the spotlight in stealth mode like this, after failures like "The Love Guru". Make people love the new character first, then realize and fall back in love with the actor. I wonder who originally hatched the idea. Perhaps I'll find out in the "Mike Myers on Will Arnett & The Gong Show" Jimmy Kimmel clip I'm going to watch next.
I just saw a full episode of the Gong Show last night and I was absolutely intrigued to the max knowing it was Mike Myers, but the straight-played mystery surrounding him! Mike's British characters are my favorite and this has all the earmarks of Kenneth Reese Evans of Theatre Stories. I really enjoyed the Gong Show anyways. One piece of network programming I'll actually watch.

I think his real laugh which I heard in an interview once sounds a bit like Austin powers too just more subdued so he has to really work to hide it

The occasional gesture resembling Austin Powers, or Mike Myers as we've seen him before surfaces, but only slightly. This is a very controlled and focused performance, obviously modelled after someone specific. The gestures, body language, voice, speech. Dude really worked his ass off on this one.
The make-up is too fake for the audience not to know something is up here, but if it were better, very few people would guess it's Mike Myers.

OMG Mike Myers now hosts The Gong Show! He's wearing full makeup and looks like Dr. Evil with hair but he sounds like Austin Powers! The almost-Shrek voice and Wayne's World dance moves gave it away, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that he chose to play another wacky character instead of hosting as himself!
