I was at this game! I was lucky enough to be a first year graduate student then. I did not know all of the ND football lore, but one learns fast. Rushing the field afterwards was a moment I won't forget.
I watched this game with my dad when I was 10 years old. The Rocket was such an exciting player. We were die hard Florida State fans and hated Miami. I liked Notre Dame because they were the only team from that era who could beat Miami and deny them a championship. When Florida State did it in 1989 (24-10), Miami won the title anyway. What kind of crap is that.
Neither could I. Nor could I figure out how ND, a few years later beat FSU, and a great Bobby Bowden team, and then lose the next week to Boston College.
Even if this series came back, I don't think it wouldn't be the same. Miami just doesn't have that cool factor they did in the 80's, 90s, and early 2000s. But holy shit, the bad blood between these two teams back then was insane!!!
Fortunately, the series has partially come back. Miami and Notre Dame have since played 4 times, in 2010, 2012, 2016, and 2017. They will also meet more in the future since Notre Dame plays a partial ACC schedule in the regular season
I lived and died with the Irish growing up in northwest Indiana/Chicago area. 1988 was the first year i somewhat followed football and they were undefeated. I vividly remember the game in late 1989 at Miami when they still had not lost, I thought they were like the Harlem Globetrotters and would never lose. The loss at Miami that year blew my mind. Nevertheless, the 1990 game was revenge.
27 Undefeated Seasons, 11 Nat'l Championships, 7 Heisman Trophies... Everyone hates ND but really they made college football what it is today. After all Knute Rockne was the man who invented the foward pass.
Horrible play-calling inside the five by Miami on that possession that ended in their first field goal. Outstanding blocking by Notre Dame on that reverse on the last TD drive. Mirer threw one and then the receiver downfield had another good block.
This was one of the greatest college game I'd seen live. Glad it's on video but it's nothing like out in the field. Ismael the rocket, Ricky Watters, Myers, Zorich. Oh yeah i remember those names.
@Knightmessenger Good question...most of the 4:3 clips I've uploaded are because back then that's the aspect ratio youtube used. When they changed to 16:9 I wanted to fill the frame. None of the clips have stretched picture. It's cropped on the top and bottom about 85%. But since the title safe area of a 4:3 television frame is 80%, there's minimal loss of viewable picture.
Jack Swarbick and UM are in talks of renewing the rivalry. No BS on that. I'm an avid ND fan, and I keep tabs on any football news. I was at the 88' contest. I can imagine the hype leading up the renewal. Lets hope that the Irish and the Canes return to the national spotlight in full force.
Great crowd noise. LOL @ 5:31 my man #37 oblivious to the fumble he just caused -- too busy with his post-tackle celebration. Love that 3rd and 4 call @ 7:21.
@RocketShark but there really is no purpose to modify the aspect ratio, just so it looks fullscreen. And the overscan of any television can vary widely. I have a 4:3 crt that shows almost all the vertical picture but not that much of the sides. It looks like a perfect square.
They recruit in the area known as the state of Miami. It starts at south beach, goes up I-95, and cuts over to Tampa Bay, then back down to Miami, in a triangle. If you watched the U on ESPN's 30 for 30, they reference this.
I'm no miami fan, but Notre Dame has fallen far from where it was, this isn't the 40's anymore. Money and politics are the reason Notre Dame has had all of its success.
Rocket not the Heisman winner? Total against ND, can’t have another receiver/ athlete win it again Until next year for Michigan, the polls were so against Nd at this time. The so lovable Bobby Bowden got a championship mailed to him because of his southern drawl, and the rest of the country hating Lou Holtz To bad they didn’t play each other in 1993( I realize I’m talking FSU) Oh they did, FSU must have won
The goal line stand of sorts to hold MIA to a FG to make it 10-3 instead of 14-3 was huge. MIA was on the 1 yard line, had just hit a huge pass down the middle and had picked off Mirer the play before that. If Miami sticks that in on 1st down, its really deflating. Instead ND held and turned the game around. Rocket Ismail.....what else can you say about that dude in College....he was unstoppable.
Heisman winners rely on the bro system more than anything. It's all politics. FACT: Miami has had better overall talent than Notre Dame, and still does.
2:45 if you look closely you will notice that number 31 was catching up to the rocket ismail which is to say that he would have caught the rocket ismail
@ripperduck What about RB and WR? Lee Becton, Tony Brooks, Autry Denson, Culver, Johnson. Not to even mention guys like Watters and Reggie Brooks. FBs like Marc Edwards, Ray Zellars, and a future NFL hall of famer in Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. At WR Lake Dawson, Derrick Mayes, Mr Raider aka Timmy Brown and The Rocket.
How does Miami bring in recruits? Let's see, an elite academic school, located in a major city, with a huge base of local kids who are elite players. Of course some of those kids want to stay home. Combine that with the fact that kids can actually remember the last time we were nationally relevant. I can't say that about Notre Dame. I'm 24, and it's been awhile for ND, especially in regards to winning titles.
Rocket was so fast he could play tennis with himself. Lou Holtz said the best analogy of Ismail. That he was so fast he could turn the light switch off and be in bed before the light was out.
@MarcusKiner Not when it came to the oline, at least not during those years. ND's was better. And qb's were probably a wash. But everywhere else Miami was better.
@Moutaineerman58721 "I'm not really pissed, I'll just bring up "the fumble" again as if that's some reason we lost, and then go on the standard anti-ND rant about how they will suck forever and ever."
@Moutaineerman58721 Who said I was an ND fan? Luckily, I am, but I could also just be someone who was aware of where his son went to school. So you're anti-ND hatred really wasn't called for. Besides, for as "lame" as ND supposedly is (at least that's what a lot of haters say), they still get a lot of hate thrown their way...way too much for a team that's finished barely above .500 the last few years. Maybe it's repressed anger from when ND beat your favorite childhood team back in the 80s.
hopefully Mark Richt gets us good again. ND U you can't talk before kelly U were like Miami. Good thing we play next 2 years and we can all talk crap again... The U
+Zurin Arctus ND is pretty good. they haven't won anything to scare me plus they always cough up a game or 2. they might take this years game but buckle up for the game in Miami the following year.
Yea.. Notre Dame IS college football.. Three piss poor excuses of a coach and were it not for the fact they aren't going to a bowl game they'd end the 09 season on a losing record (again).
@Moutaineerman58721 First, actually, you COULDN'T care less. That's what you meant. Second, you keep responding. Isn't that right DUDE BRO? Lastly, seems like you've wasted more than 30 seconds here. Although I get a kick out of it. Keep wasting your time. No skin off my back DUDE.
I forgot how good football was from this time. Emotional and hard hitting. Stonebreaker, Brooks, damn good stuff....
I was at this game! I was lucky enough to be a first year graduate student then. I did not know all of the ND football lore, but one learns fast. Rushing the field afterwards was a moment I won't forget.
Rip Rodney Culver , The 1st single Captain in the history of Notre Dame Football
Regular season losses used to be important.
Beating #1 ND at home and they were denying ND the national title that year too.
I miss this kind of football. Now a days its just the air-it-out offense
Agreed. Looks like arena football.
I still can't figure out how Miami lost to BYU and ND lost to Stanford this season. 1990 was a strange year.
They rebounded and won national title in 1991
It be like that sometimes!
Neither could I. Nor could I figure out how ND, a few years later beat FSU, and a great Bobby Bowden team, and then lose the next week to Boston College.
It's tough seeing footage of Rodney Culver in college and with the Chargers.
Solid Roads International Rodney Culver was a great man, and the 1st single Captain in the History of Notre Dame football
So many 1 loss teams from the past would whipe the floor with most playoff teams.
Even if this series came back, I don't think it wouldn't be the same. Miami just doesn't have that cool factor they did in the 80's, 90s, and early 2000s. But holy shit, the bad blood between these two teams back then was insane!!!

I loved watching these games when I was a kid. Everything went to hell after Lou Holtz left.
27 Undefeated Seasons, 11 Nat'l Championships, 7 Heisman Trophies... Everyone hates ND but really they made college football what it is today. After all Knute Rockne was the man who invented the foward pass.
CBS' graphics following the touchdowns are so cool---they need to bring those back!
I agree with Jim Nance. It was a pity the series ended in 1990. Time to restart this rivalry.
I agree, I loved those. What a game this was too!
Happy to see this rivalry being renewed.
Horrible play-calling inside the five by Miami on that possession that ended in their first field goal.
Outstanding blocking by Notre Dame on that reverse on the last TD drive. Mirer threw one and then the receiver downfield had another good block.
Best era of college football ever. 10 to 12 teams that were great and they played each other. I miss these days
Glad you enjoyed the video. Stay classy, Canes.
Go Irish. Ty for the vid!
Can't wait for this rivalry to start again. Soldier field 2012 I NEED TO GO.
This was one of the greatest college game I'd seen live. Glad it's on video but it's nothing like out in the field. Ismael the rocket, Ricky Watters, Myers, Zorich. Oh yeah i remember those names.
I love Notre dame football
Those were the days!!!

When Miami was a powerhouse 🍊
"And hanging out, was Maurice Crum." Funny how his son just played on Notre Dame's team last year.
Miami offered a resumption of the series earlier this year, don't know if Swarbrick will agree it to it or not.
Jack Swarbick and UM are in talks of renewing the rivalry. No BS on that. I'm an avid ND fan, and I keep tabs on any football news. I was at the 88' contest.

Still a heartbreaker. The Rocket killed us!
4.2 speed and was tough.
Great crowd noise. LOL @ 5:31 my man #37 oblivious to the fumble he just caused -- too busy with his post-tackle celebration. Love that 3rd and 4 call @ 7:21.

Had instant replay been around for college football Miami wins
They recruit in the area known as the state of Miami. It starts at south beach, goes up I-95, and cuts over to Tampa Bay, then back down to Miami, in a triangle. If you watched the U on ESPN's 30 for 30, they reference this.
I wish CBS would do Notre Dame home games again. I do not like NBC
LOL, the Leprechaun did it to those Canes again this year...GO IRISH!!!
Lol but guess who won the National Championship that year
@@gcuddy7991 in 1990, Colorado.
I'm no miami fan, but Notre Dame has fallen far from where it was, this isn't the 40's anymore. Money and politics are the reason Notre Dame has had all of its success.
The modern era is 1936 to present. Notre Dame has 8 National Championships. 1988 was the last one. They one 2 in the 70's, one in the 60's, etc.....
@9IIturbo The way ND has been the last few years it's more appropriate to say
CANES vs. CONVICTS
Rocket not the Heisman winner? Total against ND, can’t have another receiver/ athlete win it again
Until next year for Michigan, the polls were so against Nd at this time.
The so lovable Bobby Bowden got a championship mailed to him because of his southern drawl, and the rest of the country hating Lou Holtz

THIS WAS A WAR! MAIMI VS. NOTRE DAME
8:50 R.I.P Rodney Culver
Tough year for Miami losing to Brigham young and then Notre Dame after a big win at cotton Bowl they would go undefeated and share national title
This series is officially back in 2012 in Chicago, IL. Mark the calenders boys and girls.
Heisman winners rely on the bro system more than anything. It's all politics.
FACT: Miami has had better overall talent than Notre Dame, and still does.
Miami the dirtiest players ever,
2:45 if you look closely you will notice that number 31 was catching up to the rocket ismail which is to say that he would have caught the rocket ismail

Wow calm down, didn't know it would send you into a violent rage.
How does Miami bring in recruits? Let's see, an elite academic school, located in a major city, with a huge base of local kids who are elite players. Of course some of those kids want to stay home. Center, holder, kicker should get more credit. They won that game for ND.
@Moutaineerman58721
Well, I see you switched it up from 'dude' to 'bro'. Way to keep it fresh.
Great play-calling by Jim Nantz. Who was the color analyst for this game?
Rocket was so fast he could play tennis with himself. Lou Holtz said the best analogy of Ismail. That he was so fast he could turn the light switch off and be in bed before the light was out.
Not sure how both these teams lost 2 games that year
@MarcusKiner Not when it came to the oline, at least not during those years. ND's was better. And qb's were probably a wash. But everywhere else Miami was better.
why are some of your videos of 4:3 broadcasts like this one cropped or stretched? I'd rather see the whole picture pillarboxed.
@Kurzhal09 Probably, because before 1980 the U was just Miami, hardly distinguishable from Miami of OH. lol
How does Miami bring in recruits?
Maurice Crum Sr. playing for Miami...wonder where his son played???
Hmm...any Miami fans want to guess?
NOTRE DAME IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL!
Not anymore.
i bet those swimming classes were hard
@amishmime Beyond all that...33-17 in the modern era. And that's with a frosh QB, RS TB, LT, C, RT and WR.
@Moutaineerman58721
"I'm not really pissed, I'll just bring up "the fumble" again as if that's some reason we lost, and then go on the standard anti-ND rant about how they will suck forever and ever."
But we're stuck on top forevermore
DECEMBER 31 2010 LETS GO!
Great rivalry.
Horrible play-calling inside the five by Miami on that possession that ended in their first field goal.
true. but alot of Canes never did shit in the NFL, Walsh, Erickson, Lamar thomas, conley, Chris T. Jones, Marlon Brayton....etc.
Catholics vs Convicts
@DMR4736 what you really mean to say was Child Molesters 29, Convicts 20. Lol
ND got this one. I guess they had to win sometime.
@cavaleer Wgat is the all time records between Miami and Notre Dame. ND got you guys last.
Wish is granted
Ty Detmer...really?
2:38 THE ROCKET
@Moutaineerman58721
Who said I was an ND fan? Luckily, I am, but I could also just be someone who was aware of where his son went to school. So you're anti-ND hatred really wasn't called for. Give Charlie Weis a contract a extension!
Lol why would any team, even the great Hurricanes, kick it right to the Rocket? The guy had world class speed.
@cavaleer Or most of the time vs Miami.
was cleaning out the house and came across an old catholics vs convicts tee shirt, ; read catholics 29 convicts 20
@Moutaineerman58721
Vocabulary limited now that you can't say 'dude' or 'bro' without me incessantly mocking you?
@Moutaineerman58721
DUDE, I think you're just mad that I'm not letting you have the last word BRO.
Miami’s last loss until ‘Bama slaughter in Sugar Bowl?
hopefully Mark Richt gets us good again. ND U you can't talk before kelly U were like Miami. Good thing we play next 2 years and we can all talk crap again... The U
Notre Dame is Loaded, gonna be ugly!
+Zurin Arctus ND is pretty good. they haven't won anything to scare me plus they always cough up a game or 2. they might take this years game but buckle up for the game in Miami the following year.
This didn't age well
@RocketShark We bring recruits from our backyard bruh
Did anybody heard about Notre Dame facing Miami once again in 2012? Well its true. At Notre Dame Stadium!! Go Irish
Rivalry Renewed- Bring it convicts. Go irish.
Yea.. Notre Dame IS college football.. Three piss poor excuses of a coach and were it not for the fact they aren't going to a bowl game they'd end the 09 season on a losing record (again).
@Moutaineerman58721

Mo Crum Sr.!
Let's go Canes!
93 nd Michigan
The Catholics vs. the Convicts
Enjoy those words now as much as you can because pretty soon you will be eating those words. ND is on the rise GO IRISH!!!
Lou holtz the goat
Not much of a rivalry anymore. These days it would just be Miami taken to the woodshed.
+Anthony Broaddus Yup. 2012 ND beat Miami 41-3. Can't believe how far Miami has fallen.
That's what happens when you roll out a black QB year after year like the Canes have done ever since Brock Berlin graduated. Sorry, just the truth.
Peezster lol we won 41-8 vs "#3#
What about that ass cuttin 2 years ago
Notre Dame is Miami's daddy
Edward Derham yeah we are
Edward Derham u sure ?? Lol what happened Saturday
VapeTime what happened Saturday
Edward Derham notre dame is a bunch of pussies
VapeTime no you're not
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the "saints."
Shhhhh.... Miami thinks they are the only University .... bahahaha
