Progressive Suspension KLR650 front fork springs install tutorial

    Skeefoo recently bought a KLR650, and when he came for a visit we decided to install one of the extra sets of forks springs I received from Progressive Suspension. They are super easy to install, just take off the cap, pull the old spring and spacer out. Cut the spacer in half, and drop everything back down the hole. Do one side at a time and you won't even need to put the bike up on blocks.
    After testing out the difference between stock and the aftermarket springs we came to the conclusion that they feel very similar. Because a large portion of the aftermarket spring is exactly like the stock spring. The aftermarket spring begins to work it's magic when you are really hitting some heavy bumps, and compress the spring to that final bit which saves you from bottoming out.
    Upgrading the KLR's suspension is one of the first things people do to their bike. If your gonna spend a few months living out of your bike you should probably do everything you can to make it as comfortable as possible.

    You put the springs in the wrong way, the close wound coils up.
    Cheers

    Just to clear up a few things I did flush and refill the fork oil prior to riding the 400 kms to HTs house.We cut the spacer because the spring install was kind of a spur of the moment video for me.Since this vid Ive added sch 40 PVC spacers and Ive switched the springs with the tighter coils facing up as one poster pointed out.The stock spacers are no more than thin wall tubing,easy to replace at any building supply if needed,I read that PVC spacers were a better way to go so I did it.No where on the carton the springs came in did it mention which way to install the springs nor were there any additional instructions,I just winged it.Thanks for the comments. If you look at the springs they are wound tightly at the top and spaced apart at the bottom. So when you compress them they get stiffer as they get compressed. You may not notice on the road but off/road you would.

    @RaceDayPhoto Thanks for asking,Its a"Corbin" seat.Its not bad,it has a good shape,But I rode HTs KLR,and his seat felt softer,as in more cushion.But its not a torture device at all.

    @angelocardoc We were going to do that to my bike and make a video of it, but we couldn't get the header off. The bolts were so corroded we thought they were going to break, so we didn't mess with it. It keeps the heat in the pipe and away from your leg.

    @angelocardoc Thanks for asking!! It has a couple assets,it keeps the heat off your leg,
    and helps with heat transfer from pipe back to motor,and you wont believe this,but it seems to gain a slight bit more power,if thats possible,it also seems to quiet down the noise,some how,and I think it looks cool,Peace "SkeeFoo"

    @RaceDayPhoto I can't remember what the brand is. It looks really nice, and has more of a ass friendly shape. But to make that shape they can't give it as much cushion. Skeefoo took my bike for a ride and said he's going to put the stock seat back on. He liked the softer padding in the stock seat.

    I emailed them,they said it didnt matter,I changed from those metal spacers to some pvc pipe,and added 10 mls over the stock amount,to firm up the forks a little bit,5 wt.suspension oils what I used,but atf works if you cannot find fork oil.I rode the bike both ways,with the springs flipped over,theres not one bit of difference in the way they work,I could find no difference what way the springs went in.

    @Bkrayzaythetrollolol On youtube there are creators, and there are commentators. If the creators gave a damn what the commentators said, we would have stopped creating a long time ago. It doesn't bother me when people don't like my videos.

  • @halfthrottle
    @halfthrottle  12 років тому

    @Bkrayzaythetrollolol Yes I have plenty of experience with trolls. You gave yourself away pretty fast with the caps locks comments. Anytime I need to fix something on my bike I try to film it. Even if I don't have a clue what I'm doing, I figure they still help someone out there.
    I've got plenty of vids tearing up the KLR too. More fun tearing up something that's cheaper to fix.

    Nice work, it always seems like MC manufacturers tune their suspension for like a 110lbf rider, definitely not cutting it for big fat 'muricuns like me.
    For future use, you can get a lot cleaner, more precise cut on the spacers with a screw feed style pipe cutter. It won't really hurt anything as it is, no worries. Also if you ever find yourself needing a bit more preload on a bike without preload adjusters, a cheap fix is to make a slightly longer than normal spacer out of pvc pipe.

    @halfthrottle not arguing with that :) i was just wondering if it would hurt the spring.

    Hey Ryan, Love your videos.. I watch most all. One thing though and I'm not sure how important it is??? I have a 2009 klr that I just did the progressives on and the directions called for the tightly wound end of the new spring to be at the top. Not sure if it's the same for the older Klr's but if so? that may be why the ride has not changed much? Mine is quite a bit stiffer than factory springs and much less dive on braking. Might be something to check in to...

    • @rhondamarie8372
      @rhondamarie8372 10 років тому

      The forks were up higher less sag.Not much more stiffer than before maybe a little initially. the progressive springs get stiffer as they compress,thats why there called progressive.Of course there was oil in the fork tubes this is the 24th bike ive owned you should have seen the crap that i poured out of the forks when i flushed them and changed the fork oil before the spring install.I hope this answers your question tiedupand2twisted Thanks for the comment.
