    Do you realize how much I would've liked that when I was a kid? I would've never gone outside to play.

    I don't know how I came across this, but seeing this has turned me back into a little kid wanting to press buttons....

    I worked as a checkout chick 😅 in the the late 90s in Australia using a similar register to this. I was obsessed with cash registers and still am. Have no idea why. I want one of these at home!!! 😊

    Message pending light, so amazing when managers used this to call cashiers into the office for a write up.

    This looks like the registers Sam's Club used to have when I worked there are a cashier back in 1993. Walmart had them too, I think. I used to love, love, love this register!!!! I am also looking for a video clip of those giant cash registers the department stores used to use back in the late 70s & early 80s. I remember always going school clothes shopping with my mom, sister & brother and we would always go to Joske's (which is now Dillards), Millers Outpost, Foley's (Macy's now) and this other store called "The Fair" in Texas City, Texas. Those large department store registers would turn on slowly as the sales clerk would enter their employee #, then they'd ring you up and if you were paying with a check, they would feed it into a thing at the top, or if you were using a credit card, they would feed a carbon paper credit card slip into the machine, then enter the credit card # and it would print everything on the slip. Why am I fascinated with cash registers? I have no idea, but as a kid, all I did was daydream about being a cashier one day. They even let me push the buttons at the grocery store one time way back in 1982 or so. Fun times!!

    As a person that has worked on IBM 4680 and 4690 ($upermarket OS) from IBM for over 13 years, I must say that I'm very impressed with what you have done. This is/was not easy to do. Very impressive.
    As for the software, it's always destroyed when stores give up their servers. Generally speaking those systems have customer data (i.e. not credit card information, but things like loyal cards, Air Miles, cheque/check cashing numbers - a lot of data). They will destroy the hard drives and generally dump the old servers - so you are right - it's hard to source/find. Again, very impressed with what you have managed to do/write.

      Neil Hyndman That's really cool. I've had some limited contact with real 4690 and SurePOS ACE, having worked for a retailer that uses it. I've never done support for any systems, nor developed. I have operated a terminal and the controller for some time. That's where I gained what knowledge I have as well as the equipment.

      I am very impressed with what you have achieved. I have a SurePOS POS printer and I have been ripping the internet apart trying to find a windows driver for it. I want to use the printer to generate inventory tags and it’s a bitch to get the printer to work with Windows. Any suggestions or advice? Ever since Toshiba took over the POS business at IBM, they seem to have locked down the drivers and data.

    I got a hold of an IBM 4683 keyboard which looks almost exactly like you'res does (with the screen, key, and keys). I heard it is RS485, but I cant seem to get it to work right. I have a RS485 to USB adapter and the original cable that plugs into the keyboard, all I can do is get it to power up. I can't get any information out of it or into it via hyper terminal. I'm using a Windows PC. I want the keyboard to work as a keyboard for the PC or somehow a gamepad because then I can use keymappers to make the keyboard do anything I need it to. Also I would like the display in it to also be able to be talked to via LCD Smartie. I have tons of those POS pole displays like you have in the video which I use with LCD Smartie already. Any information would be greatly appreciated on the keyboard.

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  8 років тому

      +hydrolisk1792 RS485 is kind of strange, I had the good fortune of mine being USB. However, you should be able to use Toshiba/IBM's OPOS drivers. However, Toshiba has decided that it would be a good idea to lock away ALL drivers related to this hardware. Fortunately, I have backups: www.mediafire.com/folder/31ho9niixbc4a/POS
      That contains both the 32-bit and 64-bit OPOS drivers.

      Cheers mate, I grabbed the file you posted a link to here. I will see if I can somehow get this keyboard working with that software, and if so maybe I can just isolate the drivers needed for this keyboard and use them independently from the POS software...

    Nice video! How would you connect the keyboard to a regular computer? I'm looking at the IBM 4683 keyboard on ebay but it doesn't come with a cable. Do you know by any chance which cable I'll need to connect it to a pc? Thanks!

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  8 років тому +1

      +watduzhkstand4 Unfortunately, I think a 4683 keyboard will only speak RS-485. So before you can even worry about a cable, you'll need an RS-485 controller in your PC. You'll need to get a card for that. Many SurePOS machines (especially older ones) had those ports. I'm unsure if the card inside those machines is just PCI or not. I recommend looking for a USB keyboard if possible, or getting a surePOS machine with ports, I think trying to put those ports on your PC will be a headache, and probably cost a lot.

    I'm in the process to finding this type of register. Is it out of the question to have it run like they did back then? The register noise, like to have it fully active and programmed. Your printer is electronic, not like how the receipts printed back then

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  11 місяців тому

      My printer is electronic, as is the rest of my register, which is how it was run when it was made. All components are of the same age. So my receipts are accurate, and are 100% how the reciepts were printed when my unit was made. Thanks.

    Was it hard to get the Keyboard to work? any tips you have would be great
    How are you talking to the LCD Display? is that by OPoS?

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  9 років тому

      It wasn't really that hard. The keyboard essentially renders itself as a whole bunch of OPOS devices.
      You have:
      The Keyboard itself (the buttons)
      The LCD display
      The Keylock
      The MSR
      and The Tone Indicator (The beeper)
      The OPOS libraries (Microsoft Point of Service stuff) makes pretty simple. The display is just a simple method to write to. The keyboard is a little funkier.
      The biggest thing is getting the IBM hardware properly set up (which has to be done in the IBM config utility) before you can use it in any program.

    • @simdude2u
      @simdude2u 9 років тому

      michaeldim1 Are you using an IBM keyboard converter cable for a PC or do you have the SurePOS hardware?

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  9 років тому

      simdude2u I have a SurePOS PC, but the keyboard doesn't use any of the extra pins on the USB connector, so it's real easy to hook one into a regular usb port. (Assuming you have a USB keyboard)

    Impressive Work man. I have never managed to get My EPoS Software to work with the IBM Keyboard like what you have.
    What language do you use?

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  9 років тому

      C#. OPOS makes it relatively simple, if you can get the drivers going properly. The drivers are a bitch, and you have to define keycodes for the keyboard.

      Ive been using OPoS Since 2000 and I was in VB6 running on Windows 2000.

    • @michaeldim1
      @michaeldim1  8 років тому

      Uh, I can, but I'm real bad at programming, so a lot of stuff is hard coded. To get it to work with your stuff, you'd need to tweak the code. Gimme a bit and I'll get it up on the site. Meanwhile, make sure you have the UPOS drivers installed, you'll need 'em
