Hi Malcolm - I don’t know if I am missing something - what do you mean by pattern.....? pattern for me is a repeat of something....I can’t see it in the examples you gave nor in the painting you did.
It means to reduce the subjects complexity into flat shapes and arrange them on the canvas, like a clothing pattern. Maybe think of a plan that is flat shapes. Then build on that with layers of paint to give it detail and dimension.
hello i just joined but i cannot see member only videos i only see what is already on you tube the shorter videos. How do i get access to the classes or the videos
The arrangement of flat shapes is a pattern. Look for the pattern of flat shapes in your subject (not to be confused with a clothing pattern or similar)
You have a calming voice and are an excellent teacher.

Every tip is important as it helps to find more clarity.

Well explained thanks. I'd like to see more videos with you using different patterns.

it seems like your painting style is very similar to Kandinsky.which is a great thing because I love Kandinsky
Another great, informative demo, great jig-saw puzzle analogy! I keep learning more and more from your demos, really appreciate it!

I'm still not clear what a pattern is? Do you mean a shape? All you said was that the post impressionists used patterns?
