    These help so much. For me, the abstraction was always counter-intuitive, but I now see how it establishes a way to design the piece for an optimum painting. Thank you!

    Back in the early 80's I had an instructor at the Mendocino Art Center that would put a slide in a projector an it would be out of focus. We would then have to interpret what we were seeing through values, design, and color in a painting exercise. It was a lot of fun coming up with abstract designs. Thanks for the video Phil.

    Shapes, shape variation (negative and positive) and value heirarchy were absolute game-changers for me.
    Thumbnails are every bit as important. Would be fascinating looking through the sketchbooks of these artists!

    So pleased to see you back on UA-cam again. I’ve missed your lectures & introductions to random and sometimes unknown painters. Thank you so much.

    Phil, thank you for sharing your knowledge and views on painting the landscape in oils. I love your approach to design, color and nailing that focal point.

    Phil, you chose very good examples. It's not easy to see shapes before you mentioned. Thank you!

    It is very interesting to discover those american painters at the early 20 century for they are not known in Europe ; ( if you don't travel in America you have few chance to get to know the American painters before the abstract mouvement ) They announce in many ways the further abstract mouvements in America as you shows well with your analysis ; it appears to me that the abstract mouvements either in Europe or America had slightly different roots ; now this is in the light of Art History : at my art school in France (70') we were told abstract art with different sources : Bauhaus , constructivism, futurism , Africanism, Cubism and of course abstract arts from the USA ; the landscape in itself was more viewed as some thing from the past ... But here it is ; it appears to me as kind of a missing link ; Thank you for sharing this part of Art History 🙂

    I like the idea of the filter youre using in Photoshop. Can you share which filter that is?

      Hi Anne, there're are several filters I use on photoshop, I think that one is the watercolor filter.

    I am confused..your demo used a very dark value as pattern , the artists you showed in other videos did not use a very dark pattern for all areas!

    • @philstarke.artist
      @philstarke.artist  2 роки тому

      Hi Dee! I start with a simple dark pattern then vary the value slightly as I finish the painting.

    • @LauraLeeArtist
      @LauraLeeArtist 2 роки тому

      Maybe what you're seeing is different keys. A high key painting (mostly lighter shades) will have lighter "darks" than a middle or lower key painting. The demos are showing lights and darks, but every painting is different in this respect. Hope that helps.

    A lot of times I totally disagree with you as to what the focal points are. For instance the last one. I would thing the colorful reflection would be the focal point. Not the lit column of rock which you said was. The water has the most Chroma and the most contrast. It is the pattern of light coming from the top left. Echoed by the the shoreline.
    I have been learning a lot from your videos. But thought I'd bring this up.
