Another great video. I’m learning so much of how to be a respectful traveler from your videos. I’m an African-American born and raised in Los Angeles. I grew up in a Christian family that held a deep respect for Islam. As a young adult I even attempted to convert to Islam, but ultimately decided it wasn’t practical for the life I wanted to live in America. I always admired the ancient Islamic prohibition against images, since men have a tendency of distorting religion and history in their own image, which is what distorted Eurocentric history and religion. But with the advent of modern cinema and colonialism in the Islamic world many old Islamic traditions regarding images no longer apply. Perhaps however when the guardians of the mosque you visited were trying to adhere to one of those old traditions, wondering how you would edit the images of the people who were captured on your film. Food for thought.

19:49 When you're in someone else's place, make sure to be respectful and ask permission before doing anything. Don't just take photos or videos without consent. During prayer times or the call to prayer, avoid taking photos or videos because it can disturb people who are preparing to pray. Do you know why the uncle got upset? It’s because you weren’t showing respect to the situation and timing of prayers in the mosque. That actually disrupts those in the mosque who are getting ready for prayer.
The Army you mentioned actually is the Johor Palace Guard Military. It's not an Army that serves as the country military personnel. They don't have access to the Royal Malaysian Armed Forces.

I'm Malay but i do occasional buy Chinese pastries however you have to be mindful because traditionally its made with lard as the shortening agent. However nowadays even in America we just use crisco (vegetable shortening). You should ask them first if they use lard or vegetable shortening like crisco.
Perhaps you should have asked at the mosque entrance whether it is permissible to take photos or videos inside the mosque. 🕌 Ask people who are in charge. After all, such place of worship is a sacred place and any photography or video taking can be frowned upon. We cannot assume that all religious buildings work the same way.
If you're wondering about the army part jmf is the oldest army branch in Malaysia it existed in the 1800s and so when johor sultan agreed to join the federation of malaya johor itself asked the British commissioner to maintain their own state army though nowadays they're mostly seen in ceremonial roles
The onus is on the Mosque Management to ensure that there are clear large signs prohibiting video recording or photography inside the mosque, if there is such a rule. Save locals and tourists from such unpleasant incident.
I don’t want to oust him but I’m sure if anyone can recognize him they can maybe tell him that you should be kind to anyone who enters the mosque, and if you want to enforce any rules you can do it with grace and kindness, to set a good example of our faith inshAllah

It could be only one person...there's always this "uncle" who is very conventional who does not like people to record in the Mosque..it's not normal but i really hope you enjoy Johor. Johoreans are generally warm and hospitable.
Been to a lot of mosques as a tourist and were never told we could not take photos of the interior and these were historic mosques in countries like Turkey. I suppose it depends, I think you are not allowed to bring cameras into the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, and we weren’t allowed to bring batteries into the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad because of the terrorist threat when I visited soon after 9/11. Sultan Abu Bakar the Father of Modern Johor was an Anglophile and very open minded when it came to different cultures. Each of his 4 wives were of different ethnicities and heritage. He was a lifelong friend of Queen Victoria. You can see similar moorish architecture in KL notably the old KL Railway Station which is near to the National Mosque which also has very unique modern and avant- garde architecture of the 1960s. The style of architecture is also repeated in Malaysia Parliament House and the nearby national monuments and gardens. The National Museum reflects the traditional Malay culture in its architecture also. Although KL is now famous for its space-age looking towers, I feel the national buildings of the early years of independence reflected the hopes of a new nation much better. Since you will be there, do drop by Putra Mosque in Putrajaya which is built in pink granite. It was Tun Dr Mahathir’s legacy before he stepped down from power as the 4th Prime Minister. It’s some way off outside of KL, but the sunset rays reflecting off the pink walls of the mosque is quite beautiful.
Just like the US, Malaysia comprises of different states each with their own monarchs except for the former British colonies of Penang, Melaka, Sabah and Sarawak. When the Malay Peninsula states agreed to join the Federation, the Johor Sultanate negotiated to retain their army as a condition. Johor is one of the richest states in Malaysia and the royal house has its own income apart from the Federal stipend so the Sultan supports his army. He takes a very active interest in the economic development of his state in spite of the curtailing of the power of the monarchs during Tun Dr Mahathir’s time as premier. He is also serving his rotation as the current Agong of Malaysia (like a Supreme Monarch). Just for trivia’s sake, prior to the British colonial period, the Johor empire was vast and the most powerful Malay Kingdom after the fall of the Malaccan Sultanate and was ruled by several princes over their principalities. Sultan Abu Bakar played his cards right with the British when they took interest in Singapore and got their support to his appointment as Sultan of Johor although the empire was downsized. To this day, the Johor sultanate still owns prime property in Singapore.
sorry brother it is the law of the mosque and we locals are also not allowed to record inside the mosque because it belongs to the sultan for hundreds of years and they forbid it.. but others mosque mybe ok

Singapore was part of Johore State, but due to the British who took over Singapore and part of the Straits Settlement it remained as part of the British administration and eventually, when the British gave independence to Malaya, Singapore became one of the states in the expended Malaysia. However, due to the disagreement with the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Singapore has reluctantly been kick off from Malaysia.
Here in JB, there are many foreign workers from Pakistan and Bangladesh, so he might have thought you were one of them. Actually, there aren’t any such rules in the mosque... I think that uncle has had issues with foreign workers before, which might be why he treated you that way...
I like watching your vlogs however I think you should have checked before you do a recording or taking photos inside these places of worship. It's basic courtesy 🙏

You are not allowed to take pictures or videos there. It is written clearly there. You have to follow the rules.
wow bro, u r the kind of muslim i respect, so respectful. we should only differentiate characters, not religions
😂😂😂😂Hallo bai , the woman is a indonesia , the man blue shirt is a singaporean and u pakistan ...😂😂😂 and all of you try to understand malay 😂😂 ...actually the sgporean ask for kuih means its a sweet kuih cake .. but he as nit at the right time ..kuih sweet sell at early morning only
He is an American of Pakistani descent
I'm Malay but i do occasional buy Chinese pastries however you have to be mindful because traditionally its made with lard as the shortening agent. However nowadays even in America we just use crisco (vegetable shortening). You should ask them first if they use lard or vegetable shortening like crisco.
Thank you for the heads-up! I'll be sure to ask about the ingredients next time. 😊
No issue for taking photos and videos in a mosque as far as Islamic laws are concerned.
If you're wondering about the army part jmf is the oldest army branch in Malaysia it existed in the 1800s and so when johor sultan agreed to join the federation of malaya johor itself asked the British commissioner to maintain their own state army though nowadays they're mostly seen in ceremonial roles
wat a slogan...dang..
"continue to learn,
continue to grow,
there is no growth,
till you get out of
your comfort zone" 💪🥰
I agree! Getting out of your comfort zone is the best way to learn and grow.

Welcome to Johor Bahru bro.
FYI, Masjid in johor bahru was no place for tourist. Sensitive praying place. Better dont do any visit or taking any photo/video. 🙅
Beginner guides for Foods hunt :
- Foon Yew Laksa
- Stulang seafood fried rice, order a small piece of ikan bakar Manta Ray fish.
- Kim Loong Curry Fish Head.
- Century Garden Monday night market (try the fried Prawn cracker and you can find some others street foods too)
- At JB maybe you can try Lok Lok nearby your stay for interest supper. 😅
The only thing makes Johor Bahru special is that we are near to Singapore😂
Welcome back to Malaysia brother..
Really? Tapi dia kata rude? Rude tu kurang ajaq,
@SamSam-jp1ju 😄Rule masjid rules ..not rude .. tak tau lah dah rules dia mcm tu . lain negeri lain rules agama islam pon bawah kuasa negeri masing masing .
Some masjid had to follow the rules, we cannot assume them or force them because of always like this

Welcome to Johor Bahru, Malaysia this weekend to traveled by public bus in great joy to arrives safety in Johor Bahru, Malaysia November of 2024❤❤❤
5:00 the lady selling pisang goreng is Indonesian
Did you ask why you can't record video inside the mosque? I would like to know too.
The chinese man referred sweet (manis) banana fritters. Actual fact sweet >> gula is also correct but for different issue
gula is refer more to sugar.
@@simplyme3306sweet (adjective) in Malay is "Manis".
Come to melaka next! It’s Johor’s neighboring state.
19:51 Just ignore that man, Myer. Something definitely off with that him. As a Malaysian, you will encounter some buggy NPC sometimes. This is one of them.
I don’t want to oust him but I’m sure if anyone can recognize him they can maybe tell him that you should be kind to anyone who enters the mosque, and if you want to enforce any rules you can do it with grace and kindness, to set a good example of our faith inshAllah
support myer guy...
I live in JB. The walkability is bad for pedestrian. I hope you bring attention to the city council to improve pedestrian walkway in the city.
when u are in Singapore Masjid Sultan i am sure it was better...not sure about Malaysia though
I like watching your vlogs however I think you should have checked before you do a recording or taking photos inside these places of worship. It's basic courtesy 🙏
Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep that in mind for future videos! 😊
Welcome to johor bahru bro. Enjoy your holiday in jb
I think that is a personal rules by that so call pegawai masjid. No problem to record a video or picture in any mosque in Msia.
Gula is sugar. Manis is sweet
We Malaysians dont eat food sold in Chinese shops unless it has a halal certificate...
He is a modern Muslim eat everything except pork.
Yeah. I'm not Muslim. But I do know that some of the pastries contain lard.
That's why I check the restaurant before I sit whether in malay or not? Because as a foreigner I don't which one Is halal or ....
Not all Malaysians are Muslims-la. Come on don't be so lazy
@@khaliifakhalif3830 Halal restaurants should prominently display their halal symbol, usually at the door, or near the cashier's counter. But asking is also a way to go if unsure.
The earlier streets behind Pelangi, you passed by a very popular quality Dim Sum restaurant Tian Xin Lou but not halal. Its very tasty and good quality Dim Sum comparable to Singapore Crystal jade. Taman Sentosa hotel which you putting up, good and popular food street . They nvr bluff you but could have detailed you street food only avail evening onwards. There are in fact two street food . 1 for Chinese food and 1 for muslim. Its very near to your hotel. Come out in early evening than you will see the buzzling food streets :D.
Not gula but manis,sweet😂😂😂
Johor Military Army ( JMF) is only to guard the Palace of Sultan Johor.
Like masjid al azhar egypt, they ban videos and photos in the prayer hall but if outside of prayer hall can
I'm from UK here also you not allowed to take any picture or video inside the🕌 mosque. If you get caught they will insult you, saying this is house of ALLAH it's not for entertainment purposes.
They will definitely not insult you😅there's no need for exaggeration.
They might be rude to you if caught there are many illiterate Malays all around Malaysia. It better to be safe when comes to malay they get very emotional very fast
Even of you are in Makkah or Madina nowadays youn can take pictures … that guy is not from the mosque committee ….
Its funny, chinese guy (most probably from Singapore), asking a foreigner to translate "Sweet" to the seller whom i guess not a Malaysian, could be an Indonesian..Lost in translation...ahahhaaha...btw, "Sweet" is Manis in Malay, the uncle wanted the sweet banana fritter...you translated Sweet = Gula, which is incorrect...Gula = Sugar, Manis = Sweet...just fyi
Salam aleykoum i was living back in the days in new york ( your city mister the new Yorker ) and kuala Lumpu its the same vibes i think
And i was living in Florida too in the city of Miami and i think than Langkawi in malaysia its the same vibes or more better
The guy that forbids you from taking photos was surely a 'Walaun'.. bcoz most 'walaun' has the same mentality like that guy..
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
As for the barber, they are bunch of shy young guy, they worry their interpretation is not right
He wasn't shy .He just doesn't know how to speak in English. Many thanks to our Malaysian education system.
Yg meniaga goreng pisang pun warga Indonesia.
Masjid is not a place for simply visiting. You have to obey the rules. Respect the law here.
That's odd that you weren't allowed to take pictures.
I agree!
Seafood restaurants are at Stulang
Sweet = Manis
Sugar = Gula
THERE ARE EXTREME RELIGIOUS IDEALOGI PEOPLE IN MALAYSIA (ARAB EDUCATED) THT CONSERVERTIVE MAYBE HE IS ONE OF THEM I GUESS ... FOR ME MALAYASIAN SHOULD BE MODERATE ... AFTER ALL IN MEKKAH LOT OF MALAYSIAN PEOPLE TAKE PICTURE THERE RIGHT

Oloiya is known as Non halal Akhi. I travel to Malaysia at least 1-2 times a year. It’s even on the door in big letters! It’s not halal. Be careful what you eat.
Nice video ❤❤ brother 🙏
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Police shld take action against the Malay guy in the mosque whom to me is quite rude. He shld hav explained nicely to this tourist.
You're in Pelangi area. I love those place. Always stayed there. Buses are cheap. only RM2 to almost anywhere.
that means he is on LGBTQ area?
@ben-tol no. that place name is Pelangi. Because of the building/shopping mall name is Plaza Pelangi. Short form people call that area as Pelangi. Same as Pandan City Mall, people just call it as Pandan.
@@Afghanunno… that’s not the reason they call it pelangi.
#JBSTYLE please explain to this brother why photos and videos are not allowed in the Masjid.
Photos and videos are ALLOWED to be taken in any mosque. There is no religious law which says that. Muslims even take photos of and inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
You are the only tourist with luggage on board. 😆
There's no boat or ferry service to Johor, Malaysia. But you can take a ferry from Harbourfront Singapore to Batam, Indonesia.
There is a ferry Service from Singapore to Desaru which started more than a year ago

This same treatment that other vlogger got in Brunei. Very unfair, and they feel they have soo much authority.
You don't call Mama, you call them Makcik.
sweet is manis? Gula is sugar I think
You pass so many coffee shops but didn't go in for local coffee. Only cafe. Not so smart traveller. You did the same in SG, never even try local coffee.
ya , i noticed that as well. i think he prefers the ang moh coffee.
Don’t think that guy is with the management. Must be some guy who thinks he knows all stuff and trying to protect the religion.
Sweet is "manis" in Malay. "Gula" means sugar.
brother, nxt time ask whether its halal or not...
They should be proud when someone is trying to showcase the beauty of Islam. That guy ruined it all! Go to other mosques and you wont have that bad experience.
Can anyone explain why a person is not allowed to video the mosque? What's the rationale? It simply doesn't make sense to me. And if there are any good reasons behind this rule, I think the abang should practice politeness when informing visitors. The abang is simply not islamic in the manner he conducted himself. He probably is arbitrarily exercising this rule on his own whims. The mosque authority should investigate this matter and advise the abang accordingly.
In the UAE you can take pictures in any masjid and no one will object you from taking pictures nor videos and Arabs are very friendly people. in Malaysia also there are a lot of good people too not all are like that idiot
