first of all great job on this series but I always shake my head when I see black gloves in a blood kit with my experience when doing a quick head to toe looking for blood ( by slipping your hands underneath a patience ) black gloves do not show blood very well I use blue white or purple . so much easy to see right away when you find blood , I see Talon makes a tan glove that would be ok as well. ok course this is just my choice and my opinion . once again your video are the most down to earth and true to life I have seen glad I found them .

Nobody ever explained this to me after my bleed.
I was riding pillion on a motorcycle being chased by snatch land rover on tank range! Me and my mate took off on a hump and landed badly. My foot went into the back wheel and god only knows how I survived that after what you pointed out’
I had to hop a mile or so to get help as my mate just passed out over the blood.
Well,I got home and panic, I was rocking and rolling josh, I swear, seeing that light.
Mrs orchard raised my leg and placed pressure on the bleed as I vaguely remember. It’s not something you would forget is it! Well, the paramedics got me to hospital apparently where British Army surgeons reset the break and sewed everything back up. I should be dead , but for one thing I did learn over the years that my ankle contracted during the trauma. I took a year to learn to walk , told most likely never walk properly again. 20yrs before I got the feeling back in my foot as the Achilles was severed!
    How bloody lucky was I?
Thanks josh for this, it’s important to me during these dangerous times!!!

Level I Trauma, Burn and Stroke center Emergency Medicine MD here, and I love this series. I'd like to add a few things, for some of the "art" in medicine. For junctional areas, and particularly scalp wounds that tend to bleed rather profusely, I personally like elastic bandages. They work well on less serious wounds so you don't have to drop $7 to use an Israeli if its questionable. They also work great as a pressure bandage, especially over packed gauze underneath and when you twist the bandage over the site of bleeding. To boot, they double as perfect wrapping for splinting material. Not to mention they're rather compact for your out-of-hospital med kit.
Also, while suturing is typically used for cosmesis and approximating a wound, it also can be used for emergent hemorrhage control. Figure 8 stitches, for instance, specifically can be used to hemorrhage control high output wounds such as AV fistula sites. It just takes some practice, before you'd want to attempt it under pressure (no pun intended). The immediate action however, is still direct pressure.
Finally don't be afraid to apply the TQ. It's still going around even in the medical field that TQs are guaranteed to make you lose a limb. Not true. If the bleeding can't be stopped right away with direct pressure, apply the tourniquet to the extremity and get them to a Trauma center. You'll have a few hours to convert it, before permanent damage to the extremity sets in.

Good information. Along with a marker it is important to have some sort of timepiece for writing on a tourniquet what time it was applied.

I took a combat lifesaver course five years ago and need to take another. Your video is good to stimulate memory. Tourniquets have evolved a bit since i last had formal training but the CAT AND SOFT were recommend then and still are at the top of the list. Thanks for this presentation.

Buen video amigo. Currently a 4th yr medical student and learned a lot on my surgical trauma rotation conducting primary surveys (ABCDE) and secondary survey (head-to-toe exam). However, I feel like I would not know what to do in a case outside the hospital without the fancy equipments since I never had that experience. Your series and instructions are top notch to help strengthen my weaknesses. Currently reading your book and hoping to one day see you in the woods after training is over! Once again, thank you sir. Much success!

Enjoying this series, keep them coming. Instead of a suture kit, carry superglue. It was invented for medics in Vietnam. As you said, stop the bleed, irrigate/clean, superglue shut (slight hole to let it breathe), re-bandage. I recently had that done in the ER on a dog bite. It's also multi-use.

Actually, they do not. This has been proven in many scientific studies, and retrospectively looking at improvised tourniquets.

Good information. I hope you will show how to properly splint fractures, especially compound fractures. On combat gauze, do you place it in the wound or on it and how much should you use? This is good stuff to know as lately, with the current anti police attitude, I have given thought as to how to render aid in case I come across an officer who wound up on the wrong end of a confrontation.

The way combat gauze works is that it has a chemical in it that promotes clotting when it gets wet (typically with blood). So to quickly answer your question, combat gauze needs to be placed in the bleed at the source of the bleed. Keep in mind you still need to apply white knuckle pressure. That being said, take a class that will allow you to practice this and get your certified.
