  • Improvisation is something you should never plan to do. You do it when you run out of resources. Don't get caught underprepared and have to go straight to improvisation. Make sure you have the resources you need, and know how to use them, in a wilderness medical emergency.

Hands down, the absolute BEST thing you can do for a burn, sting, itch or minor wound is make a salve out of yarrow and plantain and apply that. No exaggerating, it's far more effective than any OTC med you can buy. I made a batch of it five years ago and still have a bunch left, so a little goes a long way. When I made it, I wave my entire arm back and forth through a thick patch of nettles. Rubbed the salve on and in just a few minutes the sting was gone and it left just a slight tingle. I've used it on several cuts and scrapes on myself, as well as my dogs and they all healed up after just a couple days. I recommend that any outdoors, prepper types make some of that to keep in your apothecary and, of course be sure to save some of the yarrow flowers to dry out, grind into powder and use as quick clot for bigger wounds. Great 1-2 medicinal punch right there!

Ha! I broke my wrist hiking 3 miles from the truck a year ago when the riverbank collapsed under me and I fell. My buddy made a splint out of bark, a towel and paracord. Now we each keep an extensive medical kit in each of our vehicles, so no matter which one we're driving, we have tools to handle many medical emergencies, and smaller kits, including a pressure bandage, in our packs. For blisters, I carry leukotape. But, sometimes you improvise what you need with bark and paracord!

Those military crevats remind me of the Boy Scout kerchief that we used for first aid in the 60's .

Always cut the top of the water vine before the bottom...
The water is pulled upwards by capillary action when the bottom is cut first...✌️

Josh, you're absolutely right, on injuries think the fewest, actually only those who had an accident, or old soldiers who themselves lay in the dirt.Oh yes my friend, I'm 69 years and was myself paratroopers, laugh though on the other side, the green berets. But no matter, in Asia it was, no matter where everywhere the same and no matter from where, not all came back.
What do you mean Josh, when you put together survival packs, put together a minimal requirement, one for several days and one for a longer time.
The trend to go out is increasing and young people are going out more. One should help them. Greetings from Frankfurt, beautiful videos, a lot of work and super.

Regarding the blisters I'm wondering why no Blister bandages? Hydrocolloid bandages. I think in the US they are sometimes known as Hydro-Seal or something like that.

Why carry so many sizes of splint instead of just cutting them to size with trauma shears?
