  • Here is my list of indoor plants that I have grown successfully at home without dirt or soil. This method of growing plants indoor is in the form of semi-hydro with the use of clay pebbles or LECA.
Growing your houseplants will be much easier in this method and your plants will grow even faster than using soil.
Here are the following plants that I have currently growing in Clay Pebbles (an alternative to soil):

I am writing this to share my experience after this video with leca. I transferred 15 plants from soil to leca, mostly foliage. One monstera had not been growing any leaf for one year and now I have three leaves after putting in leca. All the other plants are also doing much better than soil. Every week I can see new growth. Also it's light weight and no daily watering needed. I have come back to write this after two months.

Thanks for the video. Good to know! I find that when I top my orchid pots with lecca (together with charcoal), the orchid plants do very well. They have strong stems, roots and leaves. They flower well too (with the aid of fertiliser).

Oh! I do what you did with the "pot" in which you had the Spath (Peace Lily)! I take transparent water bottles or large translucent takeout soup containers, tape a vertical "stripe" on one side, spray paint the rest, and remove the tape. That leaves a clear window through which I can monitor the water level and inspect the roots. Brilliant minds think alike! 🙂😆

Im also facing same issue using instant mix soil sold in nurseries, although they said it has comprehensive nutrients, the fact is 90 % of my aroids plant roots system are damaged as its not porous, and the sign is rusty leaves and small/slow growth, I converted to rice husk and it worked. I will try LECA for sure, just knew LECA after watched ur video, and found in e market, info that that my country is one of LECA producer :)

Thanks for going to such great efforts to make this video. You hooked me all the way through. I do have a question on the fiddle leaf fig. In my experience, they get rusty with too much water. Do you think that's the case with yours here in leca? Does the rusty look go away? I've only had one for about a year and of course, the one that got rusty, I ended up killing it.

Hi, I think you should wash the leca very well before using it because dust from leca is actually the reason. Also when you use in clear jar or pot the algae will form as well. You can cover or use a non clear jar to avoid algae. Also I would suggest having a hole on the side of the pot so that you can flush your leca balls at least once a week or so to maintain its cleanliness.

I hope you did not throw out the fiddle leaf fig. All the leaves fell off mine due to too much watering at the wrong time and being left in a cold room over winter.😭 This spring I took 4 cuttings off the main stem, dipped them in root hormone and left them in water. They all gained leaves and white buds ie the roots are appearing. The remainder of the plant, the main stem is still sat in soil and has gained a number of leaves. The plant sits near a sunny window, indirect light. I insert my finger around the plant pot and if it feels damp I do not water. I also use a glass watering bulb filled wiv water which I insert into the soil so it slowly waters the plant. You have to research this plant and try again with it. It's a beautiful plant, well worth it.
