T.G. Shepherd is one of the most underrated of all music artists. I can't go into the details, but this song hit me just the right way when I was very lonely and in the depths of a love struggle back in the 1970s. Sometimes it takes just one artist or one song to bring you out of depression. I was depressed and Dad was driving the family car and T.G. Shepherd came on the radio with this song. It's a song that made a very big positive change in my life. We were on a family vacation and driving through Pennsylvania near Stewartstown. This song was like the sun shining through the clouds. I thought I would never love again until I heard this song. No one did it better that T.G. Love you, T.G. Shepherd for sharing your gifts.
I am so glad you salvaged this song. I was unsuccessful in getting my old turntable to work to play this on the LP, and I found that you did it. T.G. Sheppard was one of my favorite country performers. Back in my college days (disco time) I was the only guy in my group who listened to country music. T.G.Sheppard rendered the best version of this song in my opinion; even better than Niel Diamond (just my opinion). I am glad he is still around!
As a collector of versions of songs written by Neil Diamond and sung by others, I'd also been looking for this one for a long time. When I plugged "Solitary Man" and Sheppard into the search box, I got lots of references to the "Solitary Man" movie. Apparently, there's either an actor or a character named Sheppard in the movie. This song reached #100 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, where it stayed for 1 week, 35 years ago this coming week.
@@rmm1774 I've also heard versions by Chris Isaak, Johnny Cash, HIM, Johnny Rivers, and another guy who goes by initials, BJ Thomas. And more that I can't think of right now. Plus "Solitary Woman" by Della Reese.
As super great as T.G. Sheppard was looking back, he and Mickey Gilley both had recording careers in slow but sure decline until one thing happened in 1980: "Urban Cowboy." Then both of them had career renaissances.
I kind of like Neil Diamond, but I've always liked TG's version than Diamond's own self-written song. By a LOT. Then again, I WOULD be biased because TG's version was the one that I heard LONG before I heard Diamond's version!
STORY OF MY LIFE......SOMETIMES.... I WONDER IF I'LL EVER FIND TRUE LOVE,THAT ONE HEART TO GO WITH MINE FOREVER.... LOVE HAS NOT BEEN KIND TO ME, ONE DISASTROUS ATTEMPT AFTER ANOTHER, WITH ME BEING THE ONE, AS USUAL, THAT GETS ABUSED, USED, CHEATED ON, SCREWED OVER..... IS THERE NOT ANY REAL LOVE OUT THERE??? IS THERE NOT ANY REAL WOMEN OUT THERE???? EVERY WOMAN I KNOW AND LIKE IS EITHER GAY, MARRIED, OR DEAD.
How the hell can you compare Neil Diamond's version to this version. Neil Diamond's original is mainstream whereas this is a country version. It is not even like comparing apples and oranges it is more like comparing apples and carrots. You could compare this version to Johnny Cash's version, as they are both country. If you want a hard rock version check out The Sidewinders.
I put this song on repeat when I fold laundry or do housework this song is a pick me up when I'm down
Best rendition ever!
Another great post from wilburscott, you always post the best of classic country music, thanks much.
I'm not the biggest fan of cover songs but this is an excellent version of an outstanding song.

TG Shepherds version is better..One of a kind country singer. Very appealing voice.....
I am the Solitary Man of the beer virus lockdown...and just as lonely, alone as I was at the beginning.

If you can get the Motels and Memories album listen to Shame was flip side of this 45
I wonder if he ever considered recording Red Red Wine, which would have suited his vocals.

OK but prefer Neil's version and also Chris Isaak's
