There is no best country song. Way too many great ones to single just one out. It's like saying so and so is the best guitarist in the world, etc. Too many great ones.
His opening line makes the hair stand up on my arms. What a great waltz!! John Conlee is one of my favorite all time male vocalists. One of the best baritone country singers!
My uncle Frank wrote the lyrics to this song! Frank (George) Baber and John Conlee were great friends. My Uncle Frank was an Army drill sergeant and a very physically imposing man. Standing next to Conlee, he was a giant, but he wrote these touching and personal lyrics. What a great song.
I hate to see that comments on this song are years old. This song is a classic in as much as Jason and the Golden Fleece, or Beowulf is classic literature. So too this song is classic country and tells the story of a place we have all been. Wether you live in Texas, or if you live in New Jersey, this song speaks to all.
Introduced my 14 year old son to this great song just a few days ago. He didn't agree with me saying it was one of the best country songs of all time but he did like it a lot.
I'm an old man now, years ago I took my beautiful girl lady to a concert in a place called ZIGGAFEILDS IN TULSA OKLA to see John Conley!!! It was great time back then. I wish I knew what year it was. LIFE WAS SO GOOD AND THE WORLD wish I could go back one more time for a bit. 😢
I just auditioned last night and was accepted to sing as a regular in a local country music show. I am thinking of singing this song as one of the four songs in my first set. I’m 54 years old and have loved his music since the 80’s.
My dad and I watched John Conlee sing this song on Austin City Limits. One of the only times My Dad and I could agree on anything. To me, this song is one of the greatest ever written!
John Conley has one of the most pitch perfect voices in all of Country music. He is never sharp or flat and he has great breath control. His Southern accent comes through his throat and chest and not through his nose. It is very pleasing to listen to and he could make just about any female fall in love with whomever they were with and the guy was clever enough to play his songs for her.
My mom passed away a year ago. She use to say this was my song. The night she passed away i heard this song 6 times on the radio. I heard it every night on the radio for 2 weeks.
No doubt about that Ms.Pam...John Conlee is a "LIVING LEGEND" & sounds just as good now as he did in the 70s & 80s. My favorite 6 "REAL COUNTRY SINGERS"... 1.John Conlee 2.Gene Watson 3.Ronny Milsap 4.Gary Stewart 5.Don Williams 6.Merle Haggard To me...THEY'RE TRUE COUNTRY LEGENDS!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama
I love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jason Walding, if it's old, so am I. This song came out in 1978, I had been married 2 years, and was 20 years old. I have listened to CM for 61 years. I am an old lady now, and my family on both sides has deserted me. Including my son and his icky girlfriend. My husband couldn't help it; he had Pancreatic Cancer. He fought like Hell, for 2 years because it would kill me when he died. I'll die alone, and that want I want now. No one needs to come around then. They were not here when I needed them, so they do not need to bother me later. I got a dog, she doesn't steal, hit me, and treat me like crap!!!
I am an MRI TECH in WV and a patient asked to hear "old country" as they got their MRI done. I heard this song and re-fell in love with it all over again. What a timeless classic that's slipped my mind for far too long.
In 1990 I was a Captain in the Air Force. Six years of marriage was about to end and my wife had some serious medical issues. I heard this song as I was getting off the highway outside of the base one morning and it brought me to tears. I had to pull over and compose myself before going through the gate into the base. This song helped pull me through that time and 33 years of marriage. Until just recently, it would always bring a tear to my eyes whenever I heard it. I wanted to take my wife to one of his concerts for our 30th anniversary and rekindle what was once a great romance but it didn't work out. Two years later she filed for divorce. I have this song on a sound track I listen to frequently. No more tears but now I just love to hear John Conlee sing it.
It's March of 2023 and I'm here listening!!! I've always loved this song!!! Actually, I grew up on country music... My Aunt Sissy used to play 1050 WHN all day long and I'd be in the living room holding a porcelain poodle like a microphone and sing my little heart out all day long!!! Miss those days!!!
Joe I won’t be as harsh as you but I will 100% agree, there is very little good country music now. George Jones wrote a song called “ who’s gonna fill their shoes “ and my answer is nobody.
@@nathanurick8320 tottaly agree only new country artist i like is ben haggard as he does a lot of his dads music and is nothing like these new country folk
@@nathanurick8320 I believe that there will be, must be, has to be a modern rebellious outlaw movement that steers the genre back to traditional Country and Western music.

No matter how unlucky I’ve been at times in my life, I was lucky I lived during the music era I did 60’s,70’s,80’s, and some of the 90’s… I’ll take it and die with a smile…

I adore John and love his singing. My first concert was in Louisiana field with a conglomeration of many other events. They baled hay in the field, and we could sit on or lean in them. He was on a high trailer rig. Loved every minute of it. He was amazing!
Still love it. As a child in the 70s and a teen in the 80s I really didn't care for country. I was a rocker..still am. But my dad was huge country and gospel and I heard so much music. But this song stood out to me and I loved it. Still do :)
Still listening to John Conlee in 2024. His voice is amazing, it never ages. He still has the same powerful voice after all these years.
Me too
Came across this song 10 minutes ago on TikTok and can’t stop listening to it, it’s amazing

John Conlee is one of my favorites of all time. And I was born in 1971
I drove OTR, listened to this man for many, many miles. A more peaceful time in trucking. Help me get through many nights driving. Love his voice
People say "HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY" is the best country song of all time. I say "ROSE COLORED GLASSES" is the best one ever.
He sings this so well

This is from an era of what country music should sound like. Not today's teen pop music you hear on the country channels.
Amen!!
I call today's country music pop music with a twang.

One of my favorite songs. One of my old Army buddies could sing it with realism that could make you cry. Here is E.R. Stevens, MSGT (Retired).
Awesome song n memories 😢❤
God bless true people and the music.

Hello ✋ Virginia
Yes He and Waylon Jennings just had that "Country Voice".
He has the smoothest voice ever.
Pitch in inflection and tone etc awesome
This singer is a country legend, and sadly we no longer hear his music on the radio any more.

Country music is garbage anymore!

Q97.3 Chattanooga plays it a lot. They play country classics 24/7. Except on Friday nights I think when they do bluegrass night.
Willie's Roadhouse on Sirius radio plays him.
