I grew up in communist Romania. My relatives were forced to give up lots of their properties to the state for pennies...nationalization. The people who were communist party elites had lots of properties and benefits. The people in cities were allocated apartments by the state, according to how many people were in the family. Girls were considered to be able to live in 1 bedroom, so another disadvantage. In the beginning, it wasn't like that, the communists took power gradually by telling people that the abolishment of private property was for the benefit of all the people. Until they took enough power were people were given rations of food, and believe me, when you're fighting for food you stop thinking about freedoms.

I have a property paid off. I am now 71. Is the property really an asset though?? I find it is a liability. It needs continual maintenance (built in the 1930's), monthly taxes increasing each year. Utility bills (water, electric, gas) increasing each year. If I sell it a similar property would cost the same. If I downsize I would lose the circle of friends I have made in my area over the last few years. I think my younger son has the right idea. He lives in an RV on his private land in the middle of nowhere. No utility bills and no worries.

Retirement is now more difficult than it was in the past. I've been saving for a long time instead of investing, and right now I only have about $400K. considering all the inflation, i'm thinking of investing in stocks, i dont just have idea on market strategies.
At a point like this, when the pressure is already on you to retire, its best recommended you seek the services of an advisor, as this allows you make smarter investing decisions.
It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $30k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

Bought 5 acres in Florida and built a large garden with solar and a well. Have 2 heads of cattle and a pair of sheep with chickens. Lots of work but helps insulate against inflation

Gone any time for any excuse. Apparently when we buy it is really just a lease while you own the house. Gov has the real ownership. They"appropriate " your property for a railroad, a new road etc. Or they change the type of property your land is on. Sorry l can't remember if it was the constitution or the law of the land. Didn't use to be that way. Everything changed after the Civil War in the USA. This is when the 16th Amendment passed, the FED began and all of the bureaucracies began creating the 4th Branch of Government aka the SWAMP. WE the People need to fight this at the State Level and need to restore the right to truly own our homes. TX and FL have programs for retirees where they can end their property taxes at age 65,

I am amazed by all the volume of sub 30 and 30 somethings that are producing nothing. I know a few that are working for the future. Most are living at their parents house or couch surfing. I know several that work out 3 x a day but can’t find time to learn a skill or even commit to a job long enough to get promoted. The prospect of property ownership is not even a consideration or even valued.
