California is experiencing a historic drought--by some measures the deepest in more than 100 years. NASA researchers are investigating a number of explanations for what the underlying cause may be.
it has been abnormally dry here on the west coast of Canada as well this year.
chaz p I'm from Grand Prairie, AB. -10 is child's play. BTW mid vancouver island has had so little precip the local ski hill has had no chance to open, compared to the massive dumps of snow we were getting in previous years. nothing usual about it.
Gracias, Agustina. Ya no estamos disgustados. Hablo por mi.
"The 2013-2014 California drought was initiated by an anomalous high-amplitude ridge system. The anomalous ridge was investigated using reanalysis data and the Community Earth System Model (CESM). It was found that the ridge emerged from continual sources of Rossby wave energy in the western North Pacific starting in late summer and subsequently intensified into winter. The ridge generated a surge of wave energy downwind and deepened further the trough over the northeast U.S., forming a dipole. The dipole and associated circulation pattern is not linked directly with either El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or Pacific Decadal Oscillation; instead, it is correlated with a type of ENSO precursor. The connection between the dipole and ENSO precursor has become stronger since the 1970s, and this is attributed to increased greenhouse gas loading as simulated by the CESM. Therefore, *THERE IS A TRACEABLE ANTHROPOGENIC WARMING FOOTPRINT* [emphasis added] in the enormous intensity of the anomalous ridge during winter 2013-2014 and the associated drought."

If you don't trust scientists based on your own personal ideology then you are a fucking idiot.
Unfortunately these FU's vote, and they elect whore legislators in the pay of the fossil fuel industries. Case closed.
Its been raining for 3 days straight in the Sacramento valley, hopefully that makes a difference
It's weather it will change naturally. We had drought in south east England for last 5 years or more, Water board fitted us all with meters and said this would last forever and we can't take water for granted. Now we need a boat to get to work. Of coarse the water meters stayed.
The author/production editor of this and all sciencecasts that I can remember is a Dr Tony Phillips. You may have seen Dr Tony Phillips on spaceweather.com also. He is a strong advocate of the Earth to Sky Calculus group on that site and always details each launch that they have. He is also actively and directly involved with them.
Now, watching this video you may have noticed that Earth to Sky Calculus president's surname is Phillips.
Its fine to promote what you kid is doing on your own website. It is pretty damn ordinary to use your position with NASA to push them to a global audience.
Those pictures of the bare mountains without snow was quite creepy to behold, in thinking about all those people on the west coast, and how are they going to get the water they need?...
Add inner Queensland, Australia to this. So much farmers are resorting to shooting their animals because no one wants to buy them and it costs so much to transport them and feed them
So sad..! I haven't been out there for many years, but It's sad now what is happening there. I wish the rain there would continue longer...
Where I live in Arizona we are in the freeze-your-ass-off in the winter, bake-it-off in the summer cycle. Normal for the part of Arizona I live in. It should be mild four-season weather, now we go from winter strait to summer.
Why can't the excess snow in the east and Midwest be shipped west?
They need to build desalination stations along the coast.
Can't we change the course of the jet stream?
How has it effected the people?
AFFECTED
You guys want snow? SHOVEL IT OFF MY DRIVEWAY! I'M OHIOAN AND I'M SICK OF THIS GODDAMN WINTER! For fuck's sake, we're getting nailed one after another snow storms. Even Alaska is enjoying 40 degree weather!
This is why I like living in Ohio. Sure, the weather can suck in the winter, but there is always water.
O GOD HELP US WERE DROWNING IN RAIN\\
Love Elk Grove Sacramento
i love these high school kids! it's a shame my generation and my parents generation care more about SUV's and big screen TVs than the environment.
Actually my idea is very similar. Collect snow from Canada. Bring Tanker trucks up here to keep water for the fires that happen every year. This wont help the Drinking problem, but when the inevitale wild fires break out. You'll have H2O
A bit late with this video. It is snowing, raining, roads closed. I am happy to hear that NASA isn't yet promoting the global warming hoax. All we collectively know about earth, solar system, and the cosmos shows that everything is changing all the time. Why does anyone expect this winter to be like last winter?
It's raining all weekend.
No mueras por favor.
I blame my neighbour's SUV
I lived in SoCal about 40 years ago. The color of the surrounding hills was one of two options - yellow from dry, dead plants, or black, from recently burned dry, dead plants.
Now we have people trying to use this environment as proof of "climate change". There was a guy on the radio the other day claiming that the amount of fires in CA was proof of global warming, even though most are started by people accidentally. The last fire was started by people trying to keep warm because they were cold. LOL!
News flash, CA has always been dry, some years worse than others.
Sorry, recorded data trumps your obscured observation...
Gnuk
"Recorded data" of what? Most of California is very dry, hot, and windy. There are 3000+ wildfires every year. Again, have you been to the state? A short trip to the beach or the forest and the imagination that the rest of the state looks like that doesn't count. Most of CA is a desert and has been that way for quite some time.
snorman1911 there have been 1,500+ wildfires this year so far, almost twice the average for this time of year. as someone who lives in california and sees how dry and drought stricken this place is, i can confirm that you are an idiot.
Some years are above average, some are below average. Most fires are started by humans, including arson, out of control camp fires, off road vehicles, etc. So human activity has a big influence on how many fires are started.
Again, the state has always been dry and drought stricken. 40 years ago people were prohibited from watering their lawns during drought, this is nothing new.
Socal weather and Norcal weather are two very different things. For example the distance from San Diego to Tuolomne is 402 miles in a straight line. The distance between Tunis in North Africa and Rome Italy is 373 miles in a straight line. By your logic, observed weather patterns in North Africa should apply to Italy. Man, Norcal really should separate from Socal. Then we can keep our water north and you can keep your climate denial south.
do people remember that the whole world was in a drought in the early 1800-early 1900... it was world wide... USA 1930's... it not uncommon for droughts in america.. there is no climate change in that aspect..
MUCHAS GRACIAS POR MANTENERNOS TAN BIEN INFORMADOS ( R ESPECTO AL AVANCE DE LOS EFECTOS DE QUIEENES ESTAN EXPRIMIENDO NUESTRA CASA, )..y CADA VEZ SON MÁS RICOS.......................
Maybe people should move if its that bad, not a great place to raise children. Does everyone in cali have glocoma. Get those people living off the gov. out there digging to find more water.
ooohh...too bad !!!
COME ON TELL US WHY THE WHOLE WORLD WAS IN A DROUGHT IN THE LATE 1800- 1900.. COME ON DO TELL.. LETS BLAME CARBON..
Stop using all your water for plants that need especially much water in a region where there is not much water anyway.
Then you won't have that many problems.
It's the end
Me encanta ScienceCasts
News flash - drought over.
Yeah, a weekend of rain really ends a drought and completely refills the water reservoirs and restores years of below normal levels of snowpack.. Pssh
John Calvacca 2015 Update - NorCal had ABOVE average precipitation for Dec 2014. The ground is still soaked and the Sierras have snowpack.
Kevin Saunders Kevin, you are clueless! Above average rainfall and snow for a month doesn't fix the season let alone several years. The water tables are the lowest in 40 years. California as a whole is dryer than ever. A big storm is a quick fix, a band aid.
Newsflash - drought almost over! If you lived in NorCal you would know that our rivers flowing at or near normal and we do have Sierra snowpack. Obviously, we are not up to historic levels after years of low precipitation combined with corrupt/incompetent water management by the state. (see Delta smelt and Auburn Dam news stories) Also good buddy, if I were you, I'd take a new profile photo, you look like a desperate freak.
Oh god no. I can see the fools blaming this on Fukishima incoming. This is idiot fuel at its purest
Well Satan does like his home hot.
Please, change the narrator. Can't take a science-based video seriously when the narrator mispronounces ever other word. Skipping consonants is a French thing--keep it that way.
You might consider getting you ears checked, as there is nothing wrong with the narration. And if pettiness was your goal, you do win the bad manners award Ms. Brownfield!
YOU WANT TO BE LIVING IN THE GB!!!!!!
gov
